Chapter 9 - The Reward

Alessandro walked over to the sofa and knelt on the thick Persian rug.
Chiara stirred in her mother's arms, rubbing her sleepy eyes with tiny, flour-dusted fists.
She looked at Alessandro, her innocent gaze cutting through the darkness that had consumed his day.
"Uncle," she mumbled, a soft, sleepy smile appearing on her face.
"You came back."
"I told you I would," Alessandro whispered, reaching out to gently brush a curl from her forehead.
He looked up at Sophia, who was trembling, unsure of what had transpired outside these walls.
"Your daughter saved my life today, Sophia," Alessandro said, his voice thick with emotion.
"She saw what my best men could not see."
Sophia let out a choked sob, pulling Chiara even closer to her chest.
"I was so afraid for you, sir," Sophia cried softly.
"You never have to be afraid in this house again," Alessandro promised her.
He stood up, walking to his heavy iron safe in the corner of the room.
He opened it, withdrawing a thick envelope filled with pristine, high-denomination bonds.
He placed it gently on the coffee table in front of Sophia.
"This is just the beginning," Alessandro stated firmly.
"From today on, Chiara is under my personal protection, as if she were my own blood."
"Her education, her future, her safety, it is all guaranteed by the Vitale family."
Sophia stared at the wealth on the table, completely overwhelmed by the gravity of the gesture.
Chiara just yawned, oblivious to the fact that she had just become the most protected child in the country.

Alessandro felt a strange warmth spread through his chest, a feeling he hadn't experienced since his father was alive.
In a world built on lies and violence, this small, brave child was the only truth left.
