Chapter 7 - The Cleansing

"Please, boss, I had nothing to do with this!" Don Moroni squealed, holding his pudgy hands in the air.
Alessandro ignored the fat man, keeping his burning gaze locked entirely on his cousin.
Valentina backed against the floor-to-ceiling window, trapped between the glass and the wrath of her blood.
"You signed the camera orders," Alessandro stated, a cold fact hanging heavily in the air.
"You promised him the eastern territories."
Valentina’s lower lip trembled, but she raised her chin, trying desperately to find her pride.
"You were making us weak, Alessandro," she spat, though tears of fear were welling in her eyes.
"You spent more time playing with servants' children than managing our wars!"
At the mention of the child, something deeply dark snapped inside Alessandro’s soul.
He drew the Glock and aimed it squarely at the center of Valentina’s chest.
"That child you despise just outsmarted your entire pathetic coup," Alessandro whispered.
"She has more loyalty in her little finger than you possess in your entire wretched body."
He didn't blink.
He didn't hesitate.
Alessandro pulled the trigger, the suppressed gunshot making a sharp coughing sound in the large room.
Valentina collapsed against the glass, sliding down to the floor, leaving a streak of crimson behind her.
The council members erupted in panic, some falling out of their chairs to grovel on the floor.
"Silence!" Alessandro roared, and the room instantly went deathly still again.
He looked at the trembling old men who had been ready to betray him just moments ago.
"The old ways are dead."
"Anyone who supported this treason will join my cousin."

He gestured to the ghosts, who immediately stepped forward and dragged three of Valentina’s loudest supporters from their seats.
The cleansing had begun, and by the time the sun set, the Vitale family would be forged anew in fire.
