Chapter 1 - The Ride

The heavy oak doors of the Vitale estate closed behind them with a definitive thud.
Morning sunlight caught the polished chrome of the black Mercedes waiting in the courtyard.
Filippo walked a half-step behind Alessandro, playing the role of the loyal shadow to absolute perfection.
The fake driver stood sharply by the rear door, his head bowed in a counterfeit display of respect.
Alessandro did not even glance at the man's face as he slid into the luxurious leather seat.
Filippo climbed in from the opposite side, settling into the cushions with a contented sigh.
The imposter shut the doors, rounded the vehicle, and slipped behind the steering wheel.
The engine roared to life, a deep and powerful vibration that masked the tension thick in the air.
As the car rolled toward the iron gates, Alessandro rested his hands casually on his knees.
He could feel the cold, hard weight of the Glock 19 resting in his inner coat pocket.
It was a comforting pressure, a silent promise that this morning would not end the way his enemies had planned.
Filippo checked his phone, his thumb swiping across the screen with practiced nonchalance.
"The council members are already taking their seats," Filippo murmured, not looking up.
"Let them wait," Alessandro replied, his voice as smooth as aged whiskey.
"A king does not rush to satisfy his court."
Filippo chuckled softly, slipping the phone back into his tailored suit pocket.
"You are right, boss, as always."
The Mercedes merged onto the bustling city streets, leaving the safety of the estate behind.
Alessandro stared out the tinted window, watching the blur of innocent civilians going about their morning routines.
He knew exactly where the ambush was supposed to happen.
The eastern tunnel was only four miles away, a concrete trap where the cameras had conveniently gone blind.
He had to change the rhythm of the game before the fake driver could deliver them into the slaughterhouse.
"Take the western route," Alessandro commanded suddenly, breaking the heavy silence.
The driver’s eyes flicked up to the rearview mirror, flashing a brief, panicked look at Filippo.
"But sir, the eastern tunnel is much faster," the driver stammered, his accent slightly off.
"I said, take the western route," Alessandro repeated, his tone dropping an octave into a lethal whisper.
"The morning sun hurts my eyes today, and I prefer the shade of the high-rises."
Filippo shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his polished veneer cracking for just a fraction of a second.
"Alessandro, we will be incredibly late if we detour now," Filippo argued gently.
"Since when do you question my directions, brother?" Alessandro turned his head, locking eyes with the traitor.
Filippo swallowed hard, pasting that familiar, sickening smile back onto his face.
"Never, boss," Filippo conceded, nodding to the driver.
"You heard the man, take the western route."
May you like
The imposter gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles turning white as he yanked the car into a sharp left turn.
Alessandro leaned back and closed his eyes, the trap now broken, but the war had only just begun.
