Chapter 5 - THE RECKONING OF THE LEVERAGE

Three months later, the formal criminal trials for Daniel and Vanessa Vance came to a swift, decisive end.
Facing overwhelming physical evidence, unalterable digital metadata, and testimony from six financial auditors, both defendants accepted full felony plea bargains to avoid facing a jury trial that carried a maximum thirty-year prison sentence.
Daniel Vance pleaded guilty to First-Degree Assault, Grand Larceny, Corporate Bank Fraud, and Identity Theft. He was sentenced to twelve years in state prison with no possibility of parole for at least nine years.
Vanessa Vance pleaded guilty to Felony Money Laundering, Criminal Conspiracy, and Accessory to Grand Larceny. She was sentenced to six years in a medium-security facility, followed by five years of mandatory probation and complete asset forfeiture.
Every single luxury item, designer handbag, watch, and bank account tied to their names was seized by the court receiver and liquidated to pay full restitution to Vanguard Capital and the Montgomery Estate Trust.
On a cool, sunny morning in October, I sat in Miriam Cole’s office for the final closing of the marital dissolution.
The divorce decree was signed by the judge. The marriage was officially dissolved. The Montgomery house was fully restored to the private trust, and my father’s legacy was completely protected.
"It’s over, Claire," Miriam said, sliding the signed divorce decree across the desk with a warm, triumphant smile. "You are officially a free woman. Every dollar stolen has been recovered, and Daniel will be in a cell until he’s nearly forty-five years old."
I picked up the signed paper, looking at my name stamped cleanly at the bottom: CLAIRE MONTGOMERY.
The name Daniel had tried so hard to erase was the only thing that remained standing.
"Thank you, Miriam," I said, shaking her hand firmly. "For everything."
"What are you going to do now, Claire?" she asked gently.

I looked out the window at the Manhattan skyline, feeling the smooth, painless skin on my neck where the burn had fully healed under the care of the best dermatologists in the country.
"I’m going to run my father’s company," I said, a clear, radiant smile spreading across my face. "And I’m going to make sure no woman ever feels helpless in her own home again."
