Chapter 2 - THE TRAP SPRINGS AT MIDNIGHT

At 11:30 PM that same evening, a shiny black sports car pulled into the circular driveway of the Montgomery estate.

Daniel and Vanessa stepped out of the vehicle, laughing loudly as they walked up the front steps. They were returning from an expensive dinner at a steakhouses downtown, paid for using a secondary credit card Daniel had opened illegally in my name two months prior.

Through the hidden camera feed streamed directly to the tablet on my hotel nightstand, I watched them enter the dark house.

"Check the kitchen, Danny," Vanessa said, kicking off her high heels in the foyer and pouring herself a glass of wine from the side bar. "I bet the little bitch is crying on the couch, waiting for you to tell her she can sleep in the guest room."

"She’s probably in our bedroom hiding under the covers," Daniel smirked, loosening his silk tie as he walked toward the kitchen to grab a bottle of sparkling water. "Claire doesn't have the guts to leave. She has no family, no friends, and her little design studio doesn't make enough to pay rent on a studio apartment. She knows she needs me."

Daniel pushed open the double doors to the kitchen and flipped on the overhead recessed lights.

He stopped dead in his tracks.

The room was exactly as I had left it. The overturned chair lay on its side against the wall. The dark stain of cold coffee covered the floor tile.

And resting in the exact center of the pristine mahogany table was the bright gold wedding ring, glittering under the bright white spotlights next to the clean white envelope.

Vanessa walked into the kitchen behind him, sipping her wine. "What the hell? Why didn't she clean up the mess?"

Daniel didn't answer. His arrogant smirk vanished, replaced by a sudden, uneasy twitch in his right eye. He walked slowly toward the table, his hand trembling slightly as he picked up the gold wedding band.

He stared at it for a long, silent moment, then turned his attention to the white envelope.

He ripped open the paper and began reading.

As his eyes scanned the formal legal text stamped with the seal of the New York State Supreme Court, his face drained of every drop of color.

NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE EVICTION AND TRESPASS WARNING ESTATE OF ARTHUR MONTGOMERY TRUST V. DANIEL VANCE

"What is it?" Vanessa asked, stepping closer and frowning. "Is it a letter from her lawyer asking for an apology?"

"It’s... it’s an eviction notice," Daniel stammered, his voice dropping into a breathless whisper. "It says... it says this house doesn't belong to Claire. It belongs to an irrevocable corporate trust. And the trust has terminated my occupancy rights effective immediately."

"What?!" Vanessa yelled, dropping her wine glass onto the counter. "That’s impossible! You told me this house was half yours! You told me we could put a second mortgage on it to pay off the Panama guys!"

"I thought it was!" Daniel shouted, his voice cracking with sudden panic. He dropped the letter onto the table and yanked his smartphone from his pocket, dialing my number with furious thumb taps.

Across the city, sitting comfortably on my plush bed while my sister-in-law and husband panicked on screen, I watched my phone ring on the nightstand.

I let it ring five times. Then I tapped the green button and set it to speakerphone.

"Claire!" Daniel roared into the receiver, his voice echoing loudly through the silent hotel room. "What the hell is the meaning of this paper on the table?! Where are you?! Get your ass back home right now!"

"Hello, Daniel," I said, my voice as calm and cool as smooth ice. "I see you found my ring."

"Don't play games with me, Claire!" he screamed, pacing frantically around the kitchen island while Vanessa watched him in absolute terror. "You can't evict me from my own house! We’re married! Everything in this house is marital property!"

"The house belongs to Vanguard Capital Trust, Daniel," I replied softly. "A trust established four years before I ever met you. You have zero legal interest in the property, zero marital claim to the equity, and as of six o'clock this evening, you are legally trespassing on corporate land."

"You lying little bitch!" Vanessa shrieked into the phone, grabbing the device from Daniel’s hand. "You think you can throw us out on the street?! Danny gave you a life! You’re nothing without him!"

"Hello, Vanessa," I said smoothly. "I see your neck is feeling fine. How is your toast?"

Vanessa went completely silent, her breath hitching in her throat.

"How... how do you know what I ate?" she whispered, her eyes darting frantically around the kitchen ceiling.

"I know everything that happens in that house, Vanessa," I said. "Including the fact that at 8:15 AM today, your brother committed felony assault with a deadly weapon by throwing boiling coffee into my face while you encouraged him."

"It was an accident!" Daniel yelled back, snatching the phone back from his sister. "You tripped over the chair! I didn't mean to spill anything!"

"The 4K camera hidden inside the smoke detector recorded the entire encounter in high-definition video with full directional audio, Daniel," I told him, letting the sentence hang in the air like a falling anvil. "The police have the raw file. The district attorney has the metadata. And the medical report from St. Catherine's ER logs a second-degree chemical burn across my neck."

Daniel dropped onto one of the kitchen barstools, his phone slipping an inch down his ear. He looked up at the smoke detector mounted on the ceiling, his eyes wide with absolute horror.

"Claire..." he stammered, his voice suddenly small, weak, and pathetic. "Claire... babe... please. Let’s talk about this. I was stressed... I was losing my mind over work... I didn't mean to hurt you. You know I love you—"

"Do not call me babe, Daniel," I interrupted, my voice dropping into a register so dark and lethal it made him freeze. "You have two hours to pack your personal clothes into two garbage bags and leave my father’s house. If you are still on the property at 2:00 AM, the county sheriff will remove you in steel handcuffs."

"Claire! Wait! What about the Breston loan?!" Daniel screamed, his voice breaking into pure hysteria. "They're going to freeze my accounts! They're going to arrest me!"

May you like

"They’ve already frozen your accounts, Daniel," I said softly. "Miriam Cole filed the fraud disclosure with the State Attorney General twenty minutes ago."

I clicked the red end-call button, set my phone on the nightstand, and closed my eyes, listening to the quiet hum of the air conditioner as Daniel’s frantic calls went straight to voicemail.
