Chapter 3 - THE STRIP-MINE OF DANIEL VANCE

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the financial collapse of Daniel and Vanessa Vance was complete and absolute.

While Daniel and his sister spent the night sleeping in the back of his leased BMW in a 24-hour diner parking lot, my legal team was executing a systematic freezing order across every banking institution in the tri-state area.

I met Miriam Cole at her law offices on the forty-fifth floor of the Rockefeller Center tower.

Spread across her glass conference table were three massive white binders filled with bank statements, wire transfers, corporate registries, and forensic accounting ledgers.

"It's even worse than we anticipated, Claire," Miriam said, sliding a thick blue folder toward me as I sat down with a cup of hot green tea. "Daniel wasn't just committing bank fraud with the Breston loan. He’s been operating a multi-tier embezzlement scheme inside his own employer’s firm, Apex Logistics."

"What did he do?" I asked, setting my tea down carefully to avoid stretching the bandage on my neck.

"He created four dummy vendor accounts under Vanessa’s social security number," Miriam explained, pointing at a flow chart showing red arrows connecting Apex Logistics to three bank accounts in Delaware and Panama. "Over the last two years, he diverted over $650,000 in fake freight shipping invoices directly into those accounts."

"And Vanessa?"

"Vanessa was withdrawing cash daily from local ATMs and buying high-end luxury goods—designer handbags, gold jewelry, Rolex watches—which she then resold on private auction sites to clean the money," Miriam smiled coldly. "She wasn't a failed entrepreneur, Claire. She was her brother’s professional money launderer."

I looked at the flow chart. Eight years of marriage, and the man I had shared a bed with was nothing more than a cheap, violent criminal who viewed me as his ultimate safety net.

"What is the status of the criminal warrants?" I asked.

"The District Attorney reviewed the kitchen video footage this morning at seven," Miriam replied, pulling a signed document from her briefcase. "Judge Sarah Sterling signed an arrest warrant for Daniel Vance on charges of First-Degree Felony Assault, Domestic Battery, Grand Larceny, and Scheme to Defraud. A secondary warrant was issued for Vanessa Vance as an accessory to grand larceny and money laundering."

"Have they been located?"

Miriam checked her laptop screen, a small, triumphant smile playing on her lips. "The state police tracked Daniel’s leased BMW using its GPS transponder thirty minutes ago. He’s currently parked outside your father’s holding company office on Lexington Avenue, trying to use a forged corporate ID to enter the building."

"He thinks he can access the private server room," I realized, standing up from my chair. "He thinks my father’s backup drives are stored in the basement."

"Let him try," Miriam said, standing up beside me and picking up her coat. "The police are already waiting inside."

Ten minutes later, I arrived at the grand marble lobby of the Vanguard Capital building on Lexington Avenue.

I stood behind the tinted glass partition near the security desk, watching the drama unfold through the double doors.

Daniel was standing at the front desk, wearing the same wrinkled suit he had worn the previous day. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair uncombed, his hands shaking violently as he shoved a fake corporate badge into the face of the head security guard.

"I am the Vice President of this company!" Daniel shouted, his voice echoing loudly off the high marble walls. "My wife is Claire Montgomery! I have full access rights to the basement server room! Let me through right now or I will have you fired by noon!"

The security officer didn't flinch. He simply looked down at his computer monitor, then raised his eyes to look behind Daniel.

Four uniformed NYPD officers stepped out of the private elevator bank behind the desk, their heavy boots thudding against the marble floor.

"Daniel Vance?" the lead detective called out, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his utility belt.

Daniel froze. He turned around slowly, his face going chalk-white as he saw the four officers advancing on him.

"What... what is this?" Daniel stammered, taking two steps backward until his spine hit the security desk. "There’s been a mistake! I’m an executive! My wife—"

"Daniel Vance, you are under arrest for felony assault, grand larceny, and corporate bank fraud," the detective announced in a loud, clear voice that echoed through the entire lobby. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

The detective grabbed Daniel’s arm, twisted it behind his back, and snapped the cold steel cuffs over his wrists.

"No! Wait! Claire!" Daniel screamed, his eyes wildly searching the lobby until he spotted me standing behind the tinted glass partition. "Claire! Tell them it's a mistake! Tell them you fell! Please, Claire! I'm sorry! Don't let them take me!"

I stepped out from behind the glass partition and walked slowly toward him.

I stopped three feet away, looking down at the man who had thrown hot coffee in my face less than thirty-six hours ago. I pulled back the edge of my silk scarf, letting him see the thick red burn mark and the sterile white bandage covering my neck.

"You told me to think carefully before I came back, Daniel," I said, my voice steady, smooth, and absolute. "I thought about it. And this is my answer."

Daniel stared at the burn mark on my neck, his eyes filling with sudden, pathetic tears as the officers hauled him toward the glass exit doors.

"Claire! Please!" he sobbed as the crowd of morning commuters watched him being pulled into the back of a black police van. "Claire!"

I stood on the marble steps, watching the police van pull away into the city traffic, feeling the light wind cool the skin on my face, knowing that the nightmare was finally over.
