Chapter 4 - THE FALL OF VANESSA

With Daniel locked in central booking awaiting his formal arraignment without bail, my legal team turned its full attention to his sister, Vanessa.
Vanessa had tried to flee the city.
After Daniel was arrested outside the Lexington Avenue office, Vanessa took $12,000 in stolen cash from her hidden safe deposit box, packed three designer suitcases with luxury watches and jewelry, and booked a one-way ticket to Miami under a fake name from JFK International Airport.
She thought she was being clever. She thought that without Daniel, she could slip away into the sunshine and start over with the stolen luxury goods she had accumulated over two years.
She didn't know that my private security team had been monitoring her cellular location data since midnight.
At 3:15 PM, as Vanessa stood in the international terminal lounge at JFK Airport, holding a glass of champagne and waiting for her flight to be called, three port authority police officers along with two federal financial investigators approached her table.
"Vanessa Vance?" the lead investigator asked, holding up a federal badge.
Vanessa dropped her champagne glass, the crystal shattering across the polished floor tile, spraying sparkling wine over her white leather boots.
"What do you want?!" she shrieked, backing away toward the window. "I didn't do anything! My brother did everything! I’m just a victim!"
"We have a warrant for your arrest issued by the Eastern District Court for money laundering, interstate transport of stolen property, and conspiracy," the officer stated calmly. "Put your hands behind your back."
"No! You can't touch me! Do you know who I am?!" Vanessa screamed, kicking her legs and flailing her arms as two female officers grabbed her wrists and pinned her against the glass terminal window.
The passengers in the terminal watched in silence, filming the scene on their smartphones as Vanessa was handcuffed, her designer handbags seized as evidence of financial crime.
By nightfall, Vanessa was sitting in a cinder-block holding cell directly across the corridor from her brother at the county correctional facility.
The following morning, the preliminary bail hearing was held before Federal Judge Sarah Sterling.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Miriam Cole and two senior investigators from Vanguard Capital.
Daniel and Vanessa were brought into the courtroom in orange jumpsuits, their ankles chained together, their wrists shackled to their waists.
Daniel looked completely destroyed. He had black circles under his hollow eyes, his skin was gray, and he trembled constantly. Vanessa looked furious, her mascara smeared across her face, glaring at me with pure, unadulterated venom.
Their court-appointed defense attorney stood up to address the court.
"Your Honor," the attorney began, "my clients request immediate release on personal recognizance. Mr. Vance is a respected business professional, and Ms. Vance has no prior criminal record—"
"Objection, Your Honor," the lead prosecutor interrupted, dropping a thick black binder onto the podium.
"The state presents high-definition video evidence showing defendant Daniel Vance committing aggravated felony assault against his wife, followed by clear audio recordings of both defendants plotting to flee the jurisdiction using stolen corporate funds. Furthermore, federal auditors have confirmed over $1.8 million in total financial fraud."
Judge Sterling reviewed the video clip on her bench monitor, her expression darkening with every passing second. She looked down over her glasses at Daniel and Vanessa, her eyes burning with icy judicial rage.
"The video footage provided to this court is among the most repulsive displays of domestic violence and cold-blooded cruelty I have ever witnessed," Judge Sterling declared, slamming her hand down on the wooden bench.
"Bail is denied for both defendants. They will remain in federal custody until trial."
BANG!
The gavel struck the block like a cannon shot.

Vanessa let out a piercing scream, collapsing onto the floor of the courtroom, while Daniel slumped forward against the defense table, weeping uncontrollably into his shackled hands.
I stood up slowly, smoothed my coat, and walked out of the courtroom, leaving them to face the darkness they had created with their own hands.
