Chapter 5 - The Archives of the Past

While the federal net tightened around the Sterling family, I sat in the hospital room holding Lily’s hand. She was resting under mild sedation, an IV drip fluid slowly cycling into her arm, her breathing finally deep and steady.
My burner phone chimed again. A text from my former handler, a man code-named Vanguard whom I hadn't spoken to since the day I walked away from the intelligence sector fifteen years ago:
The cleanup is complete, Arthur. The ledger is clear. The systemic corruption protecting Richard Sterling’s offshore accounts has been exposed to the federal attorney general's office. He won’t see daylight for decades. Neither will his mother. They are completely, irrecoverably broke.
I typed back a single word: Thanks.
Then I stared at the dark screen of the phone, reflecting on why I had buried this life in the first place.
Fifteen years ago, I was an operative specializing in dismantling elite criminal cartels that hid behind corporate legitimacy and political immunity. My life was defined by shadows, collateral damage, and constant danger. When my wife died, leaving me to raise young Lily alone, I realized I couldn't be both a ghost and a father. I walked away, faked my retirement, severed every tie, and moved to a quiet town where I learned to bake bread, fix lawnmowers, and live a life of absolute, mundane peace.
I swore I would never pick up the tools of my old trade again. I believed that violence and systemic destruction only begat more of the same.
And for a long time, it worked. Until Lily grew up, fell in love with a monster who wore a tailored suit, and learned to hide her bruises behind long sleeves and forced smiles because she was terrified that her father was too old, too fragile, and too isolated to protect her.
She had protected me by keeping her secret. And in doing so, she had walked straight into a cage.
"Dad?"
I blinked, snapping out of my memory. Lily’s eyes were open, looking at me with a mixture of awe, fear, and profound relief.

"I'm right here, sweetheart," I said, leaning over to brush a stray lock of hair away from her unbruised temple.
"The nurse... she told me what’s happening on the news," Lily whispered, her voice shaking. "They arrested Richard. They raided the estate. His accounts are frozen... how did you do that? Who are you, Dad?"
