Chapter 2 - The Ghost from the Ledger

The voice on the other end of the encrypted line didn’t tremble. It didn’t ask for clarification. It simply gave a single, chilling confirmation.
"Understood, Ghost-1," the voice replied. "The archive is unlocked. We have eyes on the target's grid. How deep do you want the crater?"
"Root and branch," I said, my eyes locked on Richard, who was now descending the porch steps with a glass of champagne in hand, his smirk returning as he watched me hold the satellite phone. "Leave nothing that can grow back."
"Ten minutes," the voice said, and the line went dead.
I closed the black case, slid it back beneath the truck seat, and climbed into the driver's seat. Lily was shivering, clutching her bruised arm, staring out the window at the manicured lawns and pastel-colored tents where children were still blissfully hunting for chocolate eggs. The cognitive dissonance was suffocating—a world of extreme, superficial luxury built over a foundation of absolute cruelty.
"Dad," Lily choked out, her voice raw. "You... you shouldn't have called anyone. Richard’s family... they control this county. The judges, the police, the zoning boards. His uncle is a federal magistrate. We can't fight them."
"Lily," I said, putting the truck into gear and roaring down the immaculate gravel driveway, gravel flying against Richard’s imported shrubbery. "Fifteen years ago, I walked away from a world where men like Richard were treated like inconveniences to be swatted away. I chose to be a quiet man. A lonely man. But I never forgot how the machine works. And today, Richard didn't just hurt my daughter. He woke up a machine that has been rusting in the dark, and it is ravenous."
As we hit the public highway, the first sign of the storm appeared.
It wasn't meteorological. It was digital, financial, and absolute.

My burner phone buzzed violently. A text flashed across the screen from a string of alphanumeric digits: First layer breached. Sterling Holdings assets frozen.
Richard Sterling thought his wealth was a fortress. He didn’t realize it was a house of cards built on borrowed digital tokens, offshore loopholes, and regulatory violations that my old associates had cataloged, cultivated, and kept in cold storage for decades, waiting for a key that had finally been turned.
