Chapter 4 - The Federal Descent

Richard’s Easter garden party was supposed to be a celebration of dynastic permanence. Instead, it became a theater of state-sanctioned extraction.
Within six minutes of my phone call, three unmarked black utility helicopters descended directly onto the manicured lawns of the Sterling estate, churning the expensive imported turf into mud and flattening the white party tents. Guests screamed, scattering champagne flutes and designer baskets as armed men in tactical gear—not local deputies, but federal regulatory enforcement agents backed by specialized financial crimes units—poured out of the cabins.
Richard stood on his front porch, phone still glued to his ear, his face draining of every drop of color.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard’s mother shrieked, marching up to a lead agent whose jacket bore the insignia of a multi-agency federal task force. "My family built this town! My husband’s name is on the fucking courthouse!"
The agent didn't blink. He pulled a heavy leather folio from his tactical vest, flipped it open, and shoved it into her face.
"Eleanor Sterling, you and your son Richard Sterling are hereby served with immediate asset forfeiture warrants, federal grand jury indictments for tax evasion, interstate wire fraud, racketeering, and systematic corporate embezzlement," the agent recited with metronomic precision. "Step away from the residence. Everything on these premises is now federal property."
Richard dropped his phone. It smashed against the hardwood of the porch, the call to my cell finally disconnecting with a hollow beep.
He tried to run back inside the house, but two agents intercepted him with practiced ease, slamming him face-first onto the exact spot where he had stood an hour earlier, smiling while my daughter lay broken on his living room floor. They zip-tied his wrists behind his back, hauling him up like a common criminal while his terrified, high-society guests watched in mute horror from the edges of the ruined lawn.

The empire built on generational corruption, intimidation, and the silent abuse of women didn't fall over the course of months or years.
It collapsed in forty-five minutes.
