Chapter 17 - THE COUSIN WHO SOLD THE KEY

Dante nearly became the man Paolo feared.

Alina saw it happen.

Shoulders.

Jaw.

Stillness.

The room tightening around him.

Then Leo ran in from the adjoining office holding a toy truck.

“Daddy!”

Everything stopped.

Dante looked at his son.

Then breathed.

“Rosa, take him upstairs.”

Leo complained.

Dante kissed his forehead.

Waited until the door closed.

Then faced Elias again.

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

“To whom?”

“A private collector.”

“You sold an encryption key connected to hidden Rosselli accounts?”

“I didn't know what it was.”

Paolo laughed bitterly.

“You knew it carried the old dragon seal.”

“Yes.”

“Then you knew enough.”

Elias snapped:

“You disappeared for sixteen years. Spare me the family lecture.”

That landed.

Paolo went silent.

Elias explained.

After Dante’s father died, several old Rosselli relics were collected from family storage.

Jewelry.

Seals.

Letters.

Rosa’s pendant appeared among them.

Elias assumed it had been surrendered years earlier.

He sold it to pay an off-book expense.

Dante frowned.

“What expense?”

Elias hesitated.

Gabriel’s protection.

For nine years, Elias had secretly paid Mara.

Safe housing.

School changes.

Private medical coverage.

Background monitoring.

Some payments came from the trust.

Others did not.

When regulators started reviewing old accounts, Elias needed money that would not lead back to Gabriel.

“So you sold family artifacts.”

“Yes.”

Alina stared.

“You helped protect him.”

“Yes.”

“And then forged my signature?”

Elias looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

There it was.

No clean villain.

Elias had protected a child.

Then committed fraud to keep the protection invisible.

Because once secrecy becomes the method, every new problem demands more secrecy.

“Why use my name?” Alina asked.

“Because Rosa instructed that once you were connected to Dante, you were the safest adult outside the Rosselli bloodline.”

Alina almost laughed.

“She clearly overestimated my tolerance.”

Elias handed over the collector’s name.

Victor Hale.

Not a criminal boss.

An antiquities dealer in Boston.

The pendant had already changed hands again.

Tracing it took three weeks.

Eventually it appeared in an insurance registry.

Current owner:

The Rosselli Historical Foundation.

Dante stared at the screen.

“I own the foundation.”

Elias looked confused.

“You didn't buy it.”

“No.”

The acquisition had been donated anonymously.

One year earlier.

Stored in a secure archive less than six miles from Dante’s home.

They had been searching across states for something sitting inside a building carrying his name.

Alina went with him to retrieve it.

No armed spectacle.

Lawyer.

Archivist.

Chain-of-custody forms.

Dante complained about the paperwork.

Alina enjoyed it.

The pendant opened.

Inside was a microscopic data wafer.

Paolo inserted it beside his key.

The ledger decrypted.

Thousands of records appeared.

But the first folder was not financial.

It was video.

Rosa Valdez appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

Alive at the time of recording.

Alina covered her mouth.

Her mother looked into the camera.

“Lena, if you are watching this, then Gabriel found you.”

Alina began crying.

Rosa continued.

“And if Dante is beside you, I need you to understand something.”

Dante went still.

“I was wrong about one part of the dragon.”

A pause.

“The tattoo was never the danger.”

Then Rosa said:

“The danger was the man who convinced everyone only he could protect them.”

The screen changed.

A name appeared.

Not Dante.

Not Paolo.

Not their father.

May you like

ELIAS ROSSELLI.
