Chapter 15 - THE BROTHER WHO WASN'T DEAD

Dante did not react like a mafia boss.

He reacted like a younger brother.

He sat down.

Hard.

Paolo had been alive for sixteen years.

While Dante buried him.

While their mother grieved.

While their father used Paolo’s death to reshape the family.

While Dante inherited responsibilities he never expected.

Alina sat beside him.

“You don't have to decide what this means tonight.”

He looked at her.

“That sounds suspiciously healthy.”

“I've been practicing.”

Gabriel wanted answers immediately.

They did not have them.

The photograph showed a marina in Maine.

Metadata confirmed eighteen months earlier.

Elias recognized the boatyard.

Paolo had once owned property nearby under another name.

Dante wanted to go.

Alina said:

“No.”

His eyes narrowed.

“No?”

“You've spent three years telling me you don't solve every problem by walking into it with six men.”

“I was thinking four.”

“Dante.”

He exhaled.

They used an investigator instead.

The result arrived within forty-eight hours.

Paolo lived under the name Paul Grant.

Quietly.

Repairing boats.

No criminal charges.

No known involvement with Rosselli companies.

And he had known Gabriel’s location for years.

Gabriel’s face collapsed.

“He knew where I was?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he come?”

No one could answer for him.

So Gabriel called.

Paolo answered.

The first words between father and son were not dramatic.

Gabriel said:

“Is this Paul Grant?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Gabriel Vale.”

Silence.

A long one.

Then Paolo whispered:

“I know.”

Gabriel hung up.

He threw the phone across the room.

It shattered against the sofa—not the wall.

Still angry.

Still thirteen.

Alina let him be angry.

Later Paolo called Dante.

Dante answered alone.

Alina remained nearby but not listening.

When the call ended, Dante looked older.

“What did he say?”

“He wants to meet Gabriel.”

“And you?”

“He doesn't want to see me.”

Alina frowned.

“Why?”

“Because he thinks I became our father.”

That hurt.

Dante did not deny it.

The next meeting took place in a lawyer’s office.

Neutral location.

Paolo entered with gray hair and the same eyes Dante saw in mirrors.

Gabriel stared at him.

Paolo did not touch him.

Good choice.

“I’m sorry.”

Gabriel’s voice was flat.

“For which year?”

Paolo closed his eyes.

“All of them.”

Not enough.

But honest.

He explained that his boat accident had been staged.

He had discovered his father was using legitimate Rosselli shipping companies to wash old criminal assets.

Paolo planned to expose him.

Then threats began.

Rosa convinced him disappearing would protect the children.

Alina asked:

“Children?”

Paolo looked at her.

“You too.”

She froze.

Paolo continued.

“Your mother was not only hiding Gabriel.”

He looked directly at Alina.

“She was hiding who your father was.”

Alina felt the room tilt.

“My father died when I was twelve.”

Paolo shook his head.

“No, Lena.”

Then he said:

“The man who raised you was not your biological father.”

And Dante’s face changed before Alina even asked why.

May you like

Because Paolo already knew the name.
