Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at Midnight

At 11:30 p.m., the grand entrance gates of Hartwell House swung open to admit dozens of news vans, media crews, and high-society journalists.

Over fifty cameras were set up in the grand foyer, their bright halogen lights illuminating the towering white marble columns, the crystal chandelier, and the grand staircase. Live streams across every major news network and social media platform were pulling in tens of millions of viewers worldwide. The headline across the bottom of the screens read: HARTWELL ESTATE LIVE PRESS CONFERENCE: CANCELLED WEDDING & PATERNITY SCANDAL.

Richard Rourke, Camille’s billionaire father, stood near the front row of reporters, flanked by three high-powered corporate lawyers. He wore a triumphant, arrogant smirk, confident that Julian was about to deliver a weak corporate apology and offer a multi-million-dollar settlement to save his company's stock.

At precisely midnight, Julian Hartwell descended the grand staircase.

He was not wearing a corporate suit. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing his bare forearms, his expression unreadable and carved from granite.

Beside him walked Beatrice Hartwell.

And walking right beside Julian, dressed in an elegant navy silk dress provided by Beatrice, was Mara Ellis. She held Ivy in her arms, the little girl wearing a matching white dress, looking curious but calm under her father’s protective shadow.

A storm of camera flashes erupted, blindingly bright.

Julian stepped up to the podium set up at the foot of the stairs. He didn't wait for quiet. He simply adjusted the microphone and looked directly into the center camera lens.

"Good evening," Julian began, his deep baritone carrying clearly across the silent ballroom and to forty million live stream viewers worldwide. "Three hours ago, Camille Rourke released a public statement claiming that my canceled wedding was the result of a fraudulent extortion attempt by a housemaid."

Richard Rourke nodded smugly from the audience.

Julian’s eyes narrowed as he locked gaze with Richard.

"Miss Rourke’s statement was a complete and malicious lie," Julian stated flatly.

The press room erupted in shouts, camera shutters clicking like gunfire.

"Three years ago," Julian continued, his voice steady and icy, "I was illegally drugged at the St. Matthew’s Charity Gala. The woman who saved my life that night was Mara Ellis. Nine months later, she gave birth to my biological daughter, Ivy."

Julian reached down and took the certified DNA report from Beatrice, holding it up directly in front of the primary news camera.

"This is a certified forensic paternity report from Mount Sinai Hospital," Julian declared. "Ivy Ellis is my legitimate daughter and the sole legal heir to the Hartwell estate."

Richard Rourke’s smirk instantly vanished. His face turned a deep, dangerous purple. "This is outrageous! You're lying to protect a common thief!"

"Am I, Richard?" Julian countered smoothly, leaning into the microphone. "Because while my team was preparing for this press conference, federal auditors from the Securities and Exchange Commission were executing a search warrant at Vanguard Consulting—a firm owned by your family."

Richard went dead pale.

"Three years ago," Julian revealed, his voice echoing powerfully, "my late father, Arthur Hartwell, conspired with Richard Rourke to steal five hundred thousand dollars from my estate to pay off Rourke’s offshore gambling debts in Macau. They fabricated a blackmail story, forged Mara’s signature on a non-disclosure agreement, and threatened an innocent twenty-two-year-old mother with criminal charges to keep her silent!"

A collective gasp echoed through the room. Reporters began furiously typing on their laptops as live stream chat sections exploded with millions of messages per second.

Julian pulled a thick legal binder from beneath the podium and handed it to a waiting federal officer standing nearby.

"Included in this file are bank statements, audio recordings found in my father’s estate vault, and the original medical reports proving Mara never accepted a single dollar," Julian said coldly. "As of ten minutes ago, the board of Hartwell Enterprises has voted unanimously to sever all corporate ties with Rourke Global, effective immediately."

Richard Rourke took two steps back, his legal team whispering frantically in his ears as two federal agents in dark suits stepped out from behind the security line and approached him.

"Richard Rourke," the lead agent said, stepping up to the billionaire. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit extortion."

As federal agents snapped handcuffs onto Richard Rourke’s wrists in front of fifty flashing live cameras, the reporters erupted into wild chaos, throwing questions toward the podium.

"Mr. Hartwell! Mr. Hartwell!" a lead reporter from The New York Times shouted. "What happens to the estate now? Who is Mara Ellis to you?!"

Julian stepped away from the podium.

He didn't answer the reporter with words. Instead, he turned to Mara.

In front of forty million live viewers, Julian Hartwell dropped down on one knee before Mara Ellis. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, opening it to reveal a magnificent, vintage diamond ring that had belonged to his great-grandmother—a ring featuring a tiny silver hummingbird carved into the inner band.

"Mara," Julian said, his voice dropping into a tender, intense warmth that carried through the open microphone. "For three years, I lived in the dark. You gave me my daughter. You brought truth back into this house. I don't care about corporate mergers, and I don't care about high society."

He looked up at her with tears shining in his grey eyes.

"Will you give me the chance to spend the rest of my life earning your forgiveness, loving our daughter, and being the husband you deserved three years ago?"

Mara felt tears spill over her cheeks—sweet, warm tears of pure joy. She looked down at Ivy, who was smiling and pointing at the shiny ring, then back at Julian’s hopeful, waiting face.

"Yes, Julian," Mara whispered, her voice caught by the microphone. "Yes."

The grand foyer erupted into deafening applause as Julian stood up, wrapped his arms around Mara and Ivy, and pulled them into a deep, tender embrace that sealed their new beginning before the entire world.
