Chapter 2 - The Serpent’s Venom

Camille Rourke stood frozen in the center of the foyer, her face pale, her chest heaving under her emerald silk dress.

For two years, she had meticulously planned her path to becoming the next mistress of Hartwell House. Her marriage to Julian Hartwell was meant to unite two of the largest real estate empires on the East Coast, cementing her status atop Manhattan high society.

And now, a three-year-old child in a faded pink sweater and a housemaid with bruised pride were dismantling her empire in front of fifty staff members.

"This is absurd!" Camille spat, her voice echoing venomously. "Julian, you cannot possibly believe this! A piece of paper delivered by some random courier? It’s a fraud! She bribed the lab!"

"The lab is owned by Mount Sinai Hospital, Camille," Beatrice Hartwell said smoothly, stepping between Camille and the kneeling Julian. "I personally oversaw the sample collection from Ivy’s toothbrush two days ago. There was no bribery. There was only the truth."

Camille turned her glaring eyes toward Mara. "You calculating, pathetic little parasite! You brought this bastard child into this house on purpose! You waited until the day before our wedding to pull this stunt!"

"Camille!" Julian’s voice erupted like thunder as he stood up from the floor.

He stepped directly in front of Mara and Ivy, shielding them with his broad frame. His posture radiated a lethal authority that made even the seasoned security guards at the main entrance straighten up.

"You will not speak to her again," Julian said, each word laced with pure ice. "And you will never, under any circumstances, use that word to describe my daughter again."

"Your daughter?!" Camille laughed hysterically, tears of rage ruining her mascara. "She’s a servant’s child, Julian! Look at her! Look at her mother! You think the board of Hartwell Enterprises is going to accept this? You think the media is going to ignore the fact that you fathered an illegitimate child with a maid while engaged to me?"

"I wasn't engaged to you three years ago, Camille," Julian replied coldly. "In fact, three years ago, you were living in London, claiming you had no interest in returning to New York until my father passed away and left me the estate."

Camille went rigid. "That’s... that’s completely irrelevant!"

"Is it?" Julian walked over to his grandmother, taking the heavy mahogany cane from her hands and placing it gently in her grip, then turning back to Camille. "For three years, I believed Mara Ellis was a gold-digger who sold her silence for five hundred thousand dollars. I carried the guilt of that night every single day. And today, I find out my grandmother was lied to, Mara was blackmailed, and my child was raised in poverty right under my own roof."

He looked toward the security detail standing near the front doors. "Marco."

The lead security officer stepped forward immediately. "Yes, Mr. Hartwell?"

"Escort Miss Rourke to her guest suite," Julian ordered smoothly. "She has one hour to pack her personal belongings and leave Hartwell House."

"You're kicking me out?!" Camille shrieked, her voice echoing into the high ceilings. "Our wedding is tomorrow! There are six hundred guests arriving at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral! The press—"

"The wedding is canceled," Julian said without a single second of hesitation.

The domestic staff gasped in unison. A young junior maid in the back quickly slipped her phone out, her thumbs flying across the screen as she began typing a message that would inevitably break the internet within hours.

"You can't do this to me!" Camille roared, her hands curling into claws. "My father will destroy your offshore holdings! He owns thirty percent of the debt on the Hudson Yards development!"

"Tell Richard Rourke he can try," Julian said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Marco, remove her."

Marco and two uniformed security guards stepped forward, blocking Camille’s path to Julian and escorting her firmly toward the grand staircase. Camille’s screams of fury echoed down the hall until a door slammed shut on the second floor.

Silence returned to the foyer.

Julian turned slowly back toward Mara.

Mara was still trembling, holding Ivy close to her shoulder. The adrenaline that had carried her through the confrontation was beginning to fade, leaving behind exhaustion and a terrifying vulnerability.

"Mara," Julian said softly, taking a cautious step toward her. "Please... bring Ivy into the library. We need to talk."

Mara looked at the silver hummingbird still resting in his palm, then down at her daughter’s tired, tear-stained face. She knew there was no escaping the storm anymore.

"Five minutes, Julian," Mara said, her voice barely a whisper. "Then I'm taking my daughter home."
