Chapter 4 - The Viral Storm

Julian stood up immediately, stepping between Marco and the sofa. "What happened?"
Marco pulled out an iPad and handed it to Julian. "Camille Rourke left the grounds fifteen minutes ago. But before her car even reached the main gate, she released a pre-recorded video statement to The New York Post and posted a three-minute clip on TikTok."
Julian glanced at the screen, his jaw tightening as the video played.
In the clip, Camille was sitting in the back of a luxury limousine, her eyes red-rimmed from theatrical crying, holding up a copy of her canceled wedding invitation.
"To all my friends and followers," Camille sobbed into the camera. "Tomorrow was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. But an hour ago, Julian Hartwell called off our wedding after a disgruntled housemaid trapped him with a fraudulent child paternity claim. This woman, Mara Ellis, has been conspiring with corrupt insiders to extort millions from the Hartwell estate..."
"It already has four million views," Marco reported grimly. "Reporters are gathering at the main gate right now. There are news helicopters hovering over the South Lawn. The Rourke family’s PR firm is demanding a public press conference at midnight, or they are liquidating their shares in Hartwell Enterprises."
Mara pulled Ivy closer to her chest, her face draining of color. "Oh God... my mother... the media is going to stalk my mother’s apartment..."
"They won't get near her," Julian said instantly, turning to Marco. "Dispatch four security officers to Mara’s mother’s apartment immediately. Bring her to the estate under private escort."
"Yes, sir," Marco nodded and stepped back into the hallway.
"Julian," Beatrice said, standing up with the help of her cane. "This is a coordinated strike by Richard Rourke. They want to force a stock panic tomorrow morning so they can buy out our board members at a discount."
"I know what they want," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register of cold, calculated dominance.
He walked over to his desk, picked up his private phone, and dialed a number.
"Victoria," Julian said into the receiver. "Activate the media crisis protocol. I want a live press conference broadcast from the grand foyer of Hartwell House in two hours."
Mara gasped. "Julian, no! I don't want Ivy on television! I don't want her life dragged through the tabloid mud!"
Julian hung up the phone and walked back to Mara. He knelt before her once again, taking both of her hands in his. His grip was warm, solid, and utterly reassuring.
"Mara, look at me," Julian commanded softly.
Mara met his gaze, her heart pounding against her ribs.
"Camille thinks she can use the press to humiliate you and force me into submission," Julian said, his eyes burning with intense conviction. "She thinks you're just a defenseless maid who will hide in the dark while they destroy your reputation. But she doesn't know who you are. And she doesn't know what I am willing to do to protect my family."
"Your family?" Mara repeated, her breath catching in her throat.
"You and Ivy are my family," Julian said, his voice echoing with absolute certainty. "I lost three years of my daughter’s life because I was too blind to see the snakes in my own house. I am not losing another second."
He gently squeezed her hands.
"I am going to stand in front of those cameras tonight," Julian continued. "I am going to tell the world the exact truth about St. Matthew’s gala, about my father’s theft, about Arthur's blackmail, and about the brave, brilliant woman who raised my daughter alone. I am going to destroy the Rourkes legally, financially, and publicly."
He looked into Mara’s eyes with a intensity that made her chest ache with a sudden, beautiful hope.
"All I need to know," Julian whispered, "is if you will stand beside me."
May you like
Mara looked down at sleeping Ivy, then up at the silver hummingbird resting on the table, and finally at the man who was ready to burn his own high-society world to ashes just to keep them safe.
"I won't hide anymore, Julian," Mara said, her voice steady and strong. "I'll stand with you."
