Chapter 19 - Clara's Choice

Martin did not panic.
That was what made him dangerous until the final minute.
He looked around the dining room and calmly folded his hands.
"A prosecutor in a closed restaurant at midnight."
"Leonardo, your taste for theater has improved."
Leonardo remained near the door.
"This was Clara's idea."
Martin looked at her with something close to respect.
"Then I underestimated you."
Clara picked up the fractured lion ring.
"Everyone did."
The prosecutor introduced herself as Dana Whitmore and explained that Martin was not under arrest at that moment.
She had come to receive a voluntary evidentiary statement and preserve the recording.
Martin smiled again.
"Then I can leave."
Dana nodded.
"You can."
"But the moment you do, my office begins serving preservation orders on every account and company named in Gabriel's partial archive."
Martin's smile faded.
"You do not have the archive."
Gabriel held up the small metal box from Locker 3103.
"We have enough."
Martin looked at Victor.
"And you are cooperating now?"
Victor adjusted his cuff.
"I prefer survival to loyalty when loyalty was never mutual."
Dana looked at him.
"That sentence will be discussed separately."
Victor sighed.
"Naturally."
Clara almost smiled.
Martin turned back to her.
"You think this ends with me?"
"No."
"Good."
"Because Leonardo's companies still have problems."
"Victor still has exposure."
"Gabriel still falsified records and identities."
"And you, Clara, knowingly carried concealed financial data across state lines."
Gabriel stepped forward.
"Leave her out of it."
Martin smiled.
"Still deciding for her."
Gabriel stopped.
The comment hit exactly where Martin intended.
Clara looked at Gabriel.
"I'm fine."
Then she faced Martin.
"If I have legal questions, I'll answer them with a lawyer."
"I don't need a dead man choosing for me anymore."
Gabriel absorbed the words without protest.
Dana looked at Clara with a slight nod.
Martin's gaze dropped to the watch.
"You still need that to open the complete archive."
Clara looked at the ring in her palm.
"Yes."
"And once you do, there will be no controlling what comes out."
Leonardo answered.
"That is the point."
Martin laughed.
"You truly intend to destroy your own empire."
Leonardo looked around the restaurant.
"If an empire requires everyone in it to lie to survive, it was already destroyed."
Victor stared at him, perhaps hearing the end of an era.
Martin looked at Clara one final time.
"You could walk away with money tonight."
"How much?"
Gabriel looked alarmed.
Clara ignored him.
Martin sensed opportunity.
"Five million."
"Transferred legally through offshore trusts."
"Enough to disappear from all of this."
Clara tilted her head.
"In exchange for what?"
"The ring."
"You keep the watch."
"I leave."
"Everyone gets to tell whatever story helps them sleep."
Clara looked at the black square stone.
For three years, she had worked double shifts because two hundred thousand dollars felt impossible.
Five million dollars was a number from another universe.
A number that could buy a home.
A new life.
Silence.
No more debt collectors.
No more Falcone secrets.
Martin saw her hesitation.
"You owe these men nothing."
Clara looked at Leonardo.
Then at Victor.
Then at Gabriel.
Martin was right about one thing.
She owed them nothing.
That made the decision easier.
"Exactly."
She placed the ring on her own finger.
"Which means I don't have to sell my choice to any of you."
Martin's expression hardened.
Clara continued.
"I spent three years paying for decisions made without me."
"I'm not taking money to make one more."
Dana stepped forward.
"Mr. Vale, unless you have something else to add, we are finished for tonight."
Martin stood.
"You have no idea what you are releasing."
Gabriel looked at him.
"Neither did I when I first found it."
"That is why we release it to people whose job is to investigate, not to people whose job is to protect the family."
Martin glanced toward the exits.
Two federal agents waited outside the glass doors.
He looked back at Dana.
"You said I was not under arrest."
"You weren't."
"What changed?"
Dana held up a phone.
"While we were speaking, a judge signed a warrant related to the Northline Recovery accounts."
Martin looked at Clara.
For the first time, the confidence disappeared entirely.
The agents entered.
No one moved to stop them.
As Martin was escorted toward the door, he turned to Gabriel.
"You think truth will save this family?"
Gabriel looked at Clara before answering.
"No."
"I think truth gives everyone a chance to decide whether it is worth saving."
Martin was taken outside.
The restaurant became quiet again.
Clara looked at the watch on the table and the ring on her hand.
Dana asked, "Are you ready to open the archive?"
Clara took a breath.
"Yes."
May you like
Then she looked at Gabriel.
"But I turn the key."
