Chapter 15 - The Husband Who Came Back

Clara stared at the phone while Martin Vale's voice filled the maintenance room.
Gabriel's face changed first.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
"Martin," he said.
Victor looked toward the side corridor.
"You knew?"
Gabriel ignored him.
The phone speaker crackled.
"I knew you would all eventually become desperate enough to stand in the same room."
Clara looked at the empty table.
"Where is the ring?"
Martin laughed softly.
"Safe."
"Unlike most of the people who have carried it."
Gabriel took one step toward the phone.
"You used Victor to flush me out."
"Sometimes the oldest tools remain useful."
Victor's expression hardened.
"Be careful, Martin."
"You are hardly in a position to threaten anyone."
The line went dead.
Silence rushed back into the room.
Clara turned toward Gabriel.
Every question she had carried for three years pressed forward at once.
His eyes stayed on her.
"You look exactly like I remembered," he said quietly.
Clara almost laughed from the cruelty of it.
"You don't get to say that."
Gabriel lowered his eyes.
"You're right."
"Stop agreeing with me like that fixes anything."
"I know it doesn't."
She stepped closer.
"Did you stand across the street from my apartment?"
"Sometimes."
"Did you watch me go to work?"
"Yes."
"Did you know I was working doubles to pay your hospital bills?"
Gabriel's face tightened.
"Not until six months ago."
"I arranged money for you."
"Martin redirected it."
Clara's voice rose.
"And when you found out?"
"I started tracing him."
"You could have knocked on my door."
"I thought Martin was still tracking you through the debt."
"He was."
"So you decided watching me suffer from half a block away was safer."
Gabriel's eyes filled with pain.
"There is no version of this where I made the right choice."
That answer stopped her.
Not because it forgave him.
Because it was the first thing he had said that did not sound like a defense.
Leonardo and Dante entered from the main corridor moments later, followed by Sofia and Elias.
Leonardo saw Gabriel and froze.
The brothers stared at each other across the room.
Five years of grief stood between them.
Gabriel spoke first.
"Leo."
Leonardo crossed the room and embraced him so suddenly Gabriel stumbled backward.
The hug lasted only two seconds.
Then Leonardo shoved him away.
"You absolute idiot."
Gabriel gave a tired half smile.
"I expected worse."
"It is coming."
Dante approached more slowly.
Gabriel held out a hand.
Dante ignored it and pulled him into a brief embrace instead.
"You owe me five years of sleep."
"Put it on the list."
Clara watched them reunite and felt something complicated break open inside her.
She was relieved Gabriel had people who loved him.
She was furious that they had been allowed to have this moment when she had spent three years beside an empty space.
Sofia noticed and moved beside her.
"You do not have to feel happy just because he is alive."
Clara whispered, "I know."
Victor remained near the wall, visibly irritated by the family reunion.
"Martin has the ring."
Everyone turned.
Victor continued.
"And unless someone took it from him, he probably still has access to the watch."
Dante shook his head.
"I took the watch from the restaurant bar before we left."
He opened his jacket and produced the antique pocket watch.
Gabriel exhaled with relief.
"Then Martin cannot open the archive."
Leonardo looked at him.
"But neither can we."
Gabriel nodded.
"Which is why he wants us together."
Clara folded her arms.
"Explain Martin."
Gabriel looked at her first.
"He was my father's accountant."
"I know that much."
"He was also the person who first showed me Victor's hidden transfers."
Victor stepped forward.
"Because he wanted you looking at me."
Gabriel nodded.
"I realized that too late."
Leonardo frowned.
"So Victor stole money, but Martin was stealing too."
"Different streams."
Gabriel moved toward the utility table and began laying out the pieces.
"Victor moved company money into political and private influence networks."
"Some of it was illegal, some of it was merely hidden."
"Martin created fake vendors inside those networks and siphoned money for himself."
Victor's face turned cold.
"How much?"
"At least forty million over fifteen years."
Even Leonardo looked surprised.
Gabriel continued.
"When I started tracing the missing funds, Martin fed me documents pointing toward Victor."
"He expected me to expose Victor and stop there."
"Instead, I found the duplicate books."
Clara understood.
"So Martin needed you gone too."
"Yes."
"Callahan sold my schedule to Victor."
"Martin made sure Victor believed the boat would carry the complete archive."
"Victor set the trap."
"Martin waited for both of us to destroy each other."
Victor stared at the floor.
For the first time, he looked old.
Clara asked the only question that mattered to her.
"Who arranged the Boston crash?"
Gabriel looked at Martin's silent phone.
"Martin."
"And the debt?"
"Martin."
"My apartment?"
"Probably Martin's people."
Clara nodded slowly.
Her anger found a shape.
Not a simple one.
Victor had done terrible things to preserve power.
Gabriel had lied to preserve Clara.
Leonardo had ruled through fear and silence.
Martin had learned how to use all of those weaknesses against them.
Clara looked at Gabriel.
"What does Martin want now?"
"The archive destroyed."
"Then why steal the ring instead of destroying it?"
Gabriel's expression darkened.
"Because the archive contains something besides financial records."
Leonardo frowned.
"What?"
Gabriel looked directly at his brother.
"Proof that Martin was the anonymous source behind the federal investigations into you for the last seven years."
Leonardo went still.
Gabriel continued.
"He was building a case that would leave him owning the legitimate companies after you were removed."
Victor let out a bitter laugh.
"He wanted all of us gone."
Clara looked around the room.
"Then stop playing by his rules."
Gabriel turned toward her.
"What do you mean?"
"He wants the watch."
"He wants the archive closed."
"And he expects all of you to threaten, chase, hide, and protect your secrets."
She looked at Leonardo.
May you like
"So do the one thing he has never planned for."
"Tell the truth first."
