Chapter 17 - The False Ledger

By seven in the morning, Leonardo Falcone's name was beginning to appear on financial news sites.

The reports were careful.

Federal authorities had received documents alleging a long-running network of fraudulent vendors tied to Falcone-controlled companies.

No charges had been announced.

No arrests had been made.

But the damage had started.

Leonardo stood at the window of Sofia's apartment reading headlines on a tablet.

"Martin moved faster than I expected."

Gabriel looked over his shoulder.

"He had the packet prepared."

Victor poured coffee no one wanted.

"Of course he did."

"Martin never enters a room without three exits and someone else's fingerprints on the door."

Clara sat with the copy of Gabriel's letter from Locker 3103.

"Can the false documents be disproved?"

Sofia nodded.

"Eventually."

"The signatures can be challenged."

"Vendor creation dates can be traced."

"But the real archive would prove it immediately."

Dante held up the pocket watch.

"Which we cannot open without the ring."

Clara looked at Gabriel.

"Is there any backup?"

He hesitated.

"A partial one."

"Where?"

"Inside the ring's memory wafer."

"Enough to prove Martin changed ledgers, but not enough to show the whole scheme."

Clara leaned back.

"So the ring itself can hurt him."

"Yes."

"Then he cannot destroy it until he copies the data."

Gabriel nodded slowly.

"And he cannot access the wafer without the sequence you used."

Clara looked at Sofia.

"Does Martin know the sequence?"

"He knows Gabriel built one."

"He probably assumes it relates to family history."

Clara almost smiled.

"It doesn't."

Gabriel looked at her.

"What did you use?"

"The day we met."

His expression softened.

Clara held up a hand.

"Do not make that face."

"I'm still furious."

"Understood."

Victor watched them with mild fascination.

"Marriage seems exhausting."

Clara and Gabriel answered at the same time.

"It is."

For one second, everyone laughed.

The relief vanished when Clara's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered on speaker.

Martin spoke calmly.

"Mrs. Bennett."

"Mr. Vale."

"I believe we have reached the part where reasonable people make an exchange."

"You mean after the part where you framed everyone?"

"Framed is a dramatic word."

"The documents are based on real companies."

Leonardo stepped closer to the phone.

"Where is the ring?"

"Safe."

"You already used that line."

Martin chuckled.

"Then let me be specific."

"Bring the pocket watch to Gene & Georgetti tonight at midnight."

"Clara comes with it."

"No one else enters the dining room."

Gabriel shook his head before Martin finished.

"No."

Martin heard him.

"Good morning, Gabriel."

"You have been expensive to keep alive."

Clara's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

Gabriel went still.

Martin continued.

"Ask your husband who paid for his safe houses."

The line went quiet.

Clara looked at Gabriel.

"Who paid?"

Gabriel's face tightened.

"Anonymous accounts."

"I thought they were from Sofia's network."

Sofia shook her head.

"Not all of them."

Martin laughed softly through the phone.

"For three years, I knew approximately where Gabriel was."

"I let him run because he was useful."

Leonardo stared at the speaker.

"Useful how?"

"He kept Victor frightened."

"He kept you distracted."

"And he kept searching for errors in my books, which told me where the dangerous records were."

Gabriel looked sick.

Martin had not merely chased him.

He had managed him.

"Midnight," Martin said.

"Bring the watch."

"You receive the ring and the original trust documents restoring Clara's money."

Clara's voice cooled.

"My money is not a gift you can return."

"Fair point."

"Then consider the second item more valuable."

"What second item?"

A pause.

"The original hospital letter you never opened."

Clara's heart stopped.

The letter stolen from her apartment.

Gabriel looked at her.

"What letter?"

She stared at the phone.

"The one you wrote before surgery."

Gabriel's face drained.

"Clara, I never wrote a letter before surgery."

May you like

No one moved.

Martin ended the call.
