Chapter 5 - The Fall of Cole Marston

Two weeks passed like a whirlwind through the coastal city of Port Mercy.
The scandal of the canceled Bennett-Marston wedding remained the primary topic of conversation among the city's elite, but the narrative had shifted entirely.
Cole Marston’s reputation had completely collapsed.
Without his brother’s backing or family assets, Cole’s debts quickly caught up with him. He had borrowed heavily against his future trust inheritance to fund high-stakes trading accounts in Boston—debts that the Marston trust was no longer legally obligated to honor. Within ten days, his sports car was repossessed, his credit lines were frozen, and he was forced to move into a tiny, run-down rental apartment near the industrial docks.
Tessa had tried to stay with him at first, believing that Cole would eventually regain his wealth. But as soon as she realized Cole was truly penniless and ostracized by New England society, her "love" evaporated. After a loud, violent argument outside a downtown restaurant, Tessa packed her bags and fled back to her mother’s house, disgraced and alienated from all her former friends.
Meanwhile, Emma’s life had transformed entirely.
She had moved into the guest suite at Blackwood Point—though she spent almost every evening in Adrian’s quarters. With Adrian’s quiet encouragement and legal backing, Emma had resigned from her grueling shift work at the Northlake Children’s Medical Center and founded the Bennett Pediatric Rehabilitation Center—a state-of-the-art clinic on the Port Mercy waterfront dedicated to providing free physical therapy for underprivileged children.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, Emma stood inside the newly renovated clinic, looking over blueprints with her lead architect.
The glass front doors opened, and a man walked in.
It was Cole.
He looked unrecognizable. He wore a rumpled, stained jacket, his face was unshaven, his eyes bloodshot, and he smelled faintly of cheap whiskey.
"Emma," Cole rasped, his voice desperate as he walked toward her across the concrete floor.
The two private security guards Adrian had permanently assigned to protect Emma immediately stepped forward, but Emma held up a hand, stopping them.
"It's alright, Marcus," Emma told the guard calmly. "Give us five minutes."
She walked over, stopping ten feet away from her former fiancé. She felt no anger, no pain, no heartbreak. Looking at Cole now, she felt only a profound, quiet pity.
"What do you want, Cole?" Emma asked coldly.
Cole looked around the beautiful, bright clinic space, his hands shaking in his coat pockets. "Look at this place... Adrian built this for you, didn't he? He’s using you, Emma! He’s doing all of this just to get back at me! To humiliate me!"
Emma let out a small, disappointed sigh. "You still think everything in the world revolves around you, don't you, Cole?"
"He took my job! He took my money! He took my home!" Cole shouted, stepping closer, his face contorting in pathetic rage. "And now he took my bride! He planned this, Emma! Don't you see?! He wanted you from the beginning!"
"Adrian didn't take anything from you, Cole," Emma said, her voice dropping into a hard, razor-sharp tone. "You threw me away. You traded three years of loyalty and love for five months of secret hookups with my sister in hotel rooms. You destroyed your own life. Adrian simply stepped in to pick up the pieces you broke."
Cole stared at her, his lips trembling, tears of bitter self-pity pooling in his eyes. "Emma... please. I was wrong. Tessa means nothing to me. I kicked her out! I miss you... I miss us. Please, talk to Adrian. Tell him to give me back my position at the docks. We can start over—"
"There is no 'us', Cole," Emma interrupted, her tone final and unyielding. "And there never will be again."
Before Cole could speak, the heavy glass doors opened again.
Adrian stepped into the clinic.
He wore a tailored dark gray suit, his presence instantly filling the high-ceilinged room with an aura of immense, quiet power. Behind him stood two city police officers along with Victoria Vance, the family attorney.
Cole froze, turning pale as he saw his older brother.
"Cole Marston," Officer Hayes said, stepping forward with a legal document. "You are being served with a formal restraining order issued by the Port Mercy Municipal Court on behalf of Miss Emma Bennett and Marston Maritime Enterprises."
"What?!" Cole gasped, backing away.
"You have been repeatedly warned regarding trespassing on Marston property and harassing Miss Bennett," Victoria Vance announced dryly, handing him a copy of the court order. "If you come within five hundred feet of Miss Bennett, her clinic, or Blackwood Point, you will be arrested immediately without bail."
Cole looked at the document, then looked at Adrian, who was standing beside Emma, his hand coming up to rest possessively, tenderly, over Emma’s shoulder.
"Get out of her clinic, Cole," Adrian said, his dark eyes cold as ice. "Before I have the officers drag you out."
Cole knew he was completely defeated. He swallowed hard, glared at both of them with helpless rage, and turned, practically running out of the clinic into the rain.
Emma let out a long breath, leaning back against Adrian’s solid chest.
He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her tightly against him, pressing a warm kiss against her temple.
"Are you alright, my love?" Adrian whispered into her hair.
May you like
Emma turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, looking up into his dark hazel eyes with absolute certainty and happiness.
"I've never been better, Adrian," Emma smiled. "Never in my life."
