Chapter 4 - The Aftermath at Blackwood Point

The rain had returned by midnight, sweeping across the dark Atlantic waters, battering the thick stone walls of the Blackwood Point mansion.

In the second-floor library, a warm fire crackled in the wide stone fireplace.

Emma sat on the plush leather couch, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, sipping a glass of red wine. The high-strung tension that had kept her upright for forty-eight hours had finally dissolved, leaving behind a deep, peaceful exhaustion.

The heavy oak door opened, and Adrian walked in, having removed his tuxedo jacket and tie. His white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the neck, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing thick, muscular wrists and light dark hair.

He walked over to the side table, poured himself two fingers of bourbon, and sat down on the armchair across from her.

"Your mother has called the house six times," Adrian mentioned quietly, taking a sip of his drink. "Grandmother personally spoke to her on the fifth call and told her that if she stepped foot onto Marston land, she would have her barred from the country club."

Emma let out a soft, genuine laugh—the first real laugh she had uttered in what felt like years.

"Grandmother Marion is terrifying," Emma said softly. "In the best possible way."

"She likes you," Adrian said, his dark eyes fixing on hers through the warm firelight. "She always did. Even three years ago, when Cole first brought you to Sunday dinner."

Emma looked into her wine glass, her fingers tracing the crystal rim. "Three years ago... I thought I was the luckiest woman in Port Mercy. Cole was handsome, charming, funny... he made everything feel like an adventure."

"Cole is a salesman, Emma," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a rough, quiet register. "He sells people what they want to see. But when the real work of life begins—when loyalty, patience, and sacrifice are required—he runs."

Emma looked up, meeting his intense gaze. "And you, Adrian? What do you do when the real work begins?"

Adrian set his bourbon glass down on the table. He stood up slowly, walking across the oriental rug until he stood directly in front of her sofa. He leaned down, placing one hand on the back of the sofa, bringing his face close to hers.

"I build things to last, Emma," Adrian whispered, his voice vibrating deep in his chest. "In business. In life. And in love."

Emma’s heart hammered against her ribs, not with fear, but with a sudden, intoxicating heat that flushed through her veins.

"Why did you help me, Adrian?" Emma asked, her voice dropping to a breathless whisper. "You could have stayed out of it. You could have let Cole handle his own mess."

Adrian reached out, his long, warm fingers gently tracing the line of her jawline, resting against her pulse point. She shivered at his touch, leaning imperceptibly into his palm.

"Because I watched him take you for granted for three years," Adrian confessed, his hazel eyes burning with an honest, fierce passion that made Emma’s breath catch. "I watched you work until you were exhausted at that clinic, coming to family dinners exhausted, while he flirted with waitresses and complained about your hours."

His thumb stroked her cheekbone gently.

"Every time I saw you, Emma," Adrian whispered, "I wished to God that I had met you first. But you were with my brother, so I kept my distance. I respected your choice."

He leaned in closer, his lips hovering mere inches from hers.

"But he threw you away," Adrian said softly. "And I am not a fool, Emma. I never let go of priceless things."

Emma looked at his strong, handsome face—at the small scar near his temple, the sharp line of his jaw, the deep intensity in his dark eyes. She realized in that breathless moment that Cole had merely been a boy playing at love, while the man standing before her was a force of nature.

"I don't want to be protected anymore, Adrian," Emma whispered, her hand reaching up to touch his crisp collar, her fingers tangling in the soft hair at the nape of his neck. "I want to be loved."

"Then let me show you how a real man loves," Adrian murmured.

He leaned down and pressed his lips to hers.

The kiss was slow, deep, and devastatingly gentle at first, testing her boundaries, asking for permission. But as Emma let out a soft sigh and pulled him closer, the kiss deepened into something fierce, possessive, and consuming.

All the pain, betrayal, and humiliation of the past three days melted away in the fiery heat of Adrian’s embrace. She felt his powerful arms wrap around her waist, lifting her effortlessly against his hard chest as he deepened the kiss, claiming her entirely.

When he finally pulled back, both of them breathing heavily, Adrian looked down at her with a look of absolute, unshakeable devotion.

"You stay here tonight," Adrian murmured, his forehead resting against hers. "In my house. In my life."

May you like

Emma smiled, a radiant, beautiful expression that lit up her entire face.

"I'm not going anywhere, Adrian," she promised softly.
