Chapter 6 - THE HEART OF THE EMPIRE

Six Months LaterSpring had come to Chicago. The ice along Lake Michigan had melted, replaced by blue waters and bright green grass along the waterfront promenade.

The Vale Tower was quiet on a Saturday afternoon. The grand rooftop terrace of Adrian’s penthouse was decorated with white roses, blooming tulip beds, and wooden dining tables set for a private family celebration.

Staff members, reformed union leaders, and close friends gathered near the sunlit pavilion.

Lena stood near the glass railing, wearing a stunning emerald silk dress that highlighted her soft eyes and golden hair. She looked confident, radiant, and completely at peace—a woman who had reclaimed her life and found a true sanctuary.

Adrian walked up behind her, wrapping his broad arms around her waist, resting his chin softly against her shoulder.

"What are you thinking about, Director Brooks?" Adrian murmured playfully in her ear.

Lena leaned back against his chest, listening to the strong, steady beat of his heart—the same heart that had jumped back to life in Room 914 six months ago.

"I was thinking about cereal in work shoes," Lena smiled softly, turning in his arms to face him. "And how a hospital room at 2:00 AM changed our entire universe."

Adrian smiled—a rare, beautiful smile that transformed his harsh, handsome face. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a velvet box. Inside rested a magnificent diamond ring set in rose gold, sparkling brilliant under the afternoon sun.

"I built an empire out of concrete, steel, and fear, Lena," Adrian said, his voice dropping low with deep emotion. "It was cold, dark, and meaningless. You and Rosie gave me a home. You gave me a reason to wake up."

He took her hand, sliding the ring onto her finger. "Will you marry me, Lena? Will you let me protect you both for the rest of my life?"

Tears of pure happiness filled Lena’s eyes as she wrapped her arms around his neck. "Yes, Adrian. A thousand times yes."

Down on the grass of the rooftop garden, four-year-old Rosie came running toward them, wearing a little pink sundress, holding a stuffed lamb by one ear.

"Daddy! Mommy! Look!" Rosie cheered, jumping up and down. "The flowers are awake!"

Adrian laughed—a warm, booming sound that echoed over the lake—and dropped onto one knee, scooping Rosie up into his arms while keeping one arm firmly wrapped around Lena’s waist.

The dark hospital room, the poison of betrayal, and the cold winter nights were gone forever. In their place stood a future built on courage, unbreakable protection, and an everlasting love that started with a little girl’s heartbeat.
