Chapter 2 - THE ANTEROOM OF SNAKES

By 4:00 AM, the ninth floor of St. Catherine’s was locked down by a secondary security team that hadn't been dispatched by Caleb Mercer.

Three years prior, Adrian had established a secret emergency protocol known only to two men in his organization: his personal chief of tactical security, Marcus Thorne, and his private physician. The moment Dr. Reed logged Adrian’s neurological awakening into the hospital’s internal server, Marcus arrived with eight heavily armed former military operatives, completely replacing Caleb’s guards at every exit.

Caleb didn't run. Running was an admission of guilt, and Caleb was too smart to bolt without his money.

Instead, he sat in the private waiting room down the hall, sipping cold black coffee while two of Marcus’s men stood silently at the door.

Inside Room 914, the atmosphere had shifted from medical emergency to absolute tactical command. Adrian was sitting upright, supported by four pillows. An IV line was still hooked to his neck, but his color had returned.

Rosie was sound asleep in a small hospital crib pushed directly against the side of Adrian’s bed. Her fever had finally broken, thanks to the pediatric meds Dr. Reed had administered, and her small hand was resting over the metal side rail, touching the edge of Adrian’s blanket.

Lena sat in a chair beside the bed, feeling completely out of place in her stained cleaning uniform while Marcus Thorne briefed Adrian in low, urgent tones.

"Caleb signed over three port leases yesterday," Marcus reported, sliding a tablet across the bed tray. "He used a forged health proxy dated three days after your shooting. He’s liquidating your offshore holdings in Grand Cayman."

Adrian skimmed the documents, his dark eyes terrifyingly calm. "He used my private seal."

"He took it from your desk at the penthouse the night you were brought in," Marcus confirmed. "He told the board you were brain-dead."

Adrian looked over at Lena. "How did you end up in this room tonight, Lena?"

Lena swallowed hard, her fingers twisting the hem of her apron. "My supervisor... he gave me double shifts because I was behind on rent. I couldn't leave Rosie with a sitter because the heat was out in our building and she had a fever. I brought her in her stroller, hid her in the staff breakroom, but at 2:00 AM her fever spiked to 103. I panicked. I didn't have money for the emergency room co-pay. I brought her in here because... because I knew nobody was coming into your room at night, and I just wanted to lay her down somewhere warm."

Adrian stared at her for a long moment. "You trusted a dying man’s room."

"I knew you wouldn't mind," Lena said softly, meeting his intense gaze. "You were the only person in this hospital who didn't scream at me for existing."

A strange, unfamiliar softness crossed Adrian’s harsh features. He reached out, his thumb lightly brushing the back of Lena’s hand.

"You brought me back," Adrian said, his raspy voice dropping low. "Her chest against mine... her fever... it broke the darkness. Caleb thinks he owns my empire. I’m going to let him think that for twelve more hours."
