Chapter 5 - A STORM AT THE PORT

Two months passed.

Winter settled over Chicago, blanketing the city in thick white snow. The fearsome reputation of Adrian Vale had taken on a completely new dimension.

Where once he was known only as a shadow ruler who controlled trade terminals with an iron grip, he was now seen regularly walking through the snow-covered park near Lake Michigan, wearing a heavy dark wool overcoat, holding small Rosie on his shoulders while Lena walked beside him.

However, the remnants of Caleb Mercer’s rogue network hadn't completely vanished.

A faction of rogue dock managers, facing federal indictments due to the evidence Adrian had turned over, decided to make a desperate final strike. They knew that Adrian’s ultimate vulnerability was no longer his business empire—it was the mother and child living under his protection.

On a cold Tuesday afternoon, while Lena was visiting the site of a new youth center downtown funded by the Vale Foundation, two vehicles blocked her car near the port district.

Before her security detail could react, four armed men stepped out, aiming weapons at the vehicle.

Inside the car, Lena pulled Rosie tightly into her lap, her heart hammering against her ribs. But she didn't scream. She didn't panic. Two months of living beside Adrian Vale had taught her one fundamental truth: Adrian never left his family unprotected.

Suddenly, the roaring engine of a massive armored SUV echoed through the snowy alleyway.

The SUV rammed directly into the lead attacker’s vehicle, spinning it ninety degrees against the concrete barrier.

The side door of the armored vehicle slid open, and Marcus Thorne’s tactical unit flooded the alleyway, disarming the attackers in under forty seconds without a single shot fired near Lena’s vehicle.

Adrian stepped out from the passenger side of the armored car. He walked through the falling snow, his cane thumping heavily against the frozen ground, his eyes burning with absolute, lethal rage.

He walked straight to the lead attacker, who was pinned against the hood of the car by Marcus.

"Who told you to touch this car?" Adrian asked, his voice an icy whisper that cut colder than the Chicago wind.

"Caleb’s brothers..." the man stammered, terrified. "They said... they said if we grabbed the girl, you'd drop the federal charges!"

Adrian leaned down until his face was inches from the man’s ear. "Tell them this: If anyone from your crew so much as breathes the air in the same zip code as Lena and Rosie, I won't use the courts. I will erase every name attached to your family from every ledger in this city."

He turned back, opening the door to Lena’s car himself.

The lethal rage vanished instantly from his eyes, replaced by a gentle, protective warmth as he looked at Lena and Rosie.

"Are you okay, sweetheart?" Adrian asked softly, reaching in to lift Rosie into his arms.

May you like

"I wasn't scared," Rosie chirped, wrapping her small arms around his neck. "Mommy said you were coming."

Adrian looked at Lena, his heart swelling with a quiet, powerful pride. "She was right."
