Chapter 1 - THE ACCUSATION IN THE BOARDROOM

The silence in the third-floor boardroom of the Viscari estate was heavy enough to feel physical.
Alessandro Viscari did not look back at the five men seated around the dark walnut table as he walked out, holding Sophie Bennett’s tiny hand in his. The child’s bare feet left faint dusty prints on the polished floorboards, her grip tightening on Alessandro’s thumb as if he were her only anchor in a house of giants.
"Where is she, Sophie?" Alessandro asked softly, his deep voice carrying a calm that was far more dangerous than anger.
"Downstairs," Sophie whimpered, pulling her twisted white rabbit closer to her chest. "Where the big iron machines spin. The two men took the blue folder from Mommy's bag and made her drop on the floor."
Alessandro’s eyes darkened. The blue folder contained the audited shipping logs for the port terminals in South Brooklyn—documents that had disappeared from his private safe three days ago.
When they reached the laundry basement, the heavy iron door was half-ajar.
Inside, my knees were pressed against the cold concrete floor. My uniform apron was torn at the shoulder, and my hands were trembling as I tried to pick up the scattered sheets of paper strewn across the floor. My right cheek burned red from a sharp backhand strike.
"Elena," Alessandro’s voice cut through the damp air of the laundry room.
I gasped, spinning around in terror. When I saw Alessandro standing in the doorway holding my daughter’s hand, my heart nearly stopped. "Mr. Viscari... I'm so sorry! Sophie snuck out—I told her to stay in the linen quarters—"
Alessandro held up a hand, instantly cutting off my panic. He let go of Sophie’s hand, stepping into the dim light of the laundry room. His sharp eyes immediately took in the red mark on my cheek, the torn apron, and the scattered papers.
"Who did this?" he asked softly.
"Two men... in black tactical gear," I stammered, tears streaming down my face. "They demanded the keycard to the east wing service elevator. When I told them I didn't have it, one of them struck me. But before they left..."
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a heavy object that had been ripped off the attacker's wrist during the struggle.
It was a custom silver chain link bracelet with a distinct family crest engraved on the clasp: The Rose of the Marchetti Clan.

Alessandro stared at the bracelet in his palm. His jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched near his ear.
Vincent Marchetti—his trusted lieutenant sitting upstairs in the boardroom—was the owner of that crest.
