Chapter 8 - The Family We Chose

The next year became the happiest of my life.
Sophie learned to crawl.
Then walk.
Clara returned to pediatric nursing two days a week because she missed her patients.
Mom became an unexpectedly wonderful grandmother.
Vanessa kept working.
She moved into a modest apartment she could actually afford.
One afternoon she arrived carrying a stuffed giraffe for Sophie.
“Clearance rack,” she announced proudly.
I laughed.
“Who are you?”
She grinned.
“Someone with a budget.”
The woman who once believed affection required luxury had learned that a twelve-dollar toy could make a child equally happy.
We were becoming something different.
Not the family we had been.
The family we chose to become.
But one chair remained empty.
May you like
Dad's.
