Mom never returned to high society.
She never wanted to.
She remained in her apartment even after she could afford something larger.
One afternoon, while watching Sophie and Daniel play, she said, “I wasted decades trying to make strangers jealous.”
I smiled.
“Did it work?”
“Oh, probably.”
“Worth it?”
She laughed.
“Not remotely.”
Then she looked at Clara.
“I nearly lost all of this because I cared more about imported chairs than the woman sitting in one.”
Clara squeezed her hand.
Mom had finally learned what expensive furniture never could teach her.
