Chapter 5 - The Man Behind Daniel

Mara stared at the message until the letters blurred.
Luca took the phone.
“My uncle’s number.”
“You believe it?”
“I believe Victor wants us to.”
Rose entered the kitchen, wrapped in a borrowed robe.
“What happened?”
Mara showed her the video.
Rose watched once.
Then again.
When Dominic appeared, she sat down.
“That room.”
Luca looked at her.
“You recognize it?”
“I think so.”
“Where?”
“The old shipping terminal.”
“Warehouse Twelve?”
“No.”
Rose shook her head.
“Warehouse Nine.”
Luca pulled out his phone.
His security team moved before he finished speaking.
Mara said, “I’m coming.”
“No.”
She folded her arms.
“We’ve done this already.”
“This time men are being held hostage.”
“One of them is my ex.”
“The same ex who stalked you.”
“And told me not to bring the key.”
Luca stared.
Mara hated herself for caring.
Daniel had frightened her.
Controlled her.
Humiliated her.
He had grabbed her wrist two nights ago.
He had copied her identification.
Maybe for Victor.
Maybe because Victor ordered him.
None of it erased what Daniel had done.
But hearing fear in his voice had awakened something she did not want.
Not love.
She was sure of that.
Maybe memory.
Maybe grief for the man she once believed he could be.
“I don’t want him dead.”
Luca’s voice softened.
“That doesn’t mean you owe him anything.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
She looked at him.
“Yes.”
The certainty surprised her.
She really did know.
Daniel’s survival was not her responsibility.
But choosing not to abandon someone in danger could still be hers.
There was a difference.
“I’m not bringing the key.”
Luca nodded.
“Good.”
“But I’m coming far enough to help identify him.”
“From the car.”
“Fine.”
“That was easier than expected.”
“Don’t get used to it.”
By three in the morning, they had confirmation.
Warehouse Nine had electricity despite being officially abandoned.
Two vehicles were outside.
One registered to a shell company connected to Victor.
Police could be called.
Luca hesitated.
Mara noticed.
“Why not call them?”
“Because one of the officers who would respond worked for Victor twenty years ago.”
“You know that?”
“Rose’s files.”
Mara looked at her mother.
Rose nodded.
“Some names are still active.”
“So we call federal agents.”
“At three in the morning with twenty-year-old photocopies?”
Mara frowned.
“Fair.”
Luca said, “We need current evidence.”
“Such as kidnapping?”
“Yes.”
“That feels current.”
“It does.”
Luca’s attorney contacted federal authorities anonymously while his private security moved toward the terminal.
Mara rode in the second vehicle.
Rose stayed behind.
This time she did not argue.
The warehouse district was quiet.
Mara remained in the SUV while Luca entered with two men.
Five minutes passed.
Ten.
Then her phone rang.
Daniel.
Mara stared.
She answered.
“Daniel?”
His whisper came fast.
“Don’t talk.”
Mara’s heart pounded.
“Where are you?”
“I got loose.”
“How?”
“Dominic.”
“Is he with you?”
“No.”
A sound behind him.
Daniel breathed hard.
“Mara, listen. Victor doesn’t need the key.”
“What?”
“He already copied it.”
Her hand went to her pocket.
The brass key was still there.
“How?”
“When he searched Evelyn’s office. He photographed it.”
“Can a photograph open a bank box?”
“He had a duplicate cut.”
Mara swore.
“Then why the video?”
“He needs you at the bank.”
“Biometric verification.”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
“Inside Warehouse Nine.”
“Luca is there.”
Daniel went silent.
Then, “You brought Moretti?”
“He brought himself.”
“Mara, Victor wants Luca too.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
“Yes, you do.”
Silence.
“Daniel.”
“He thinks Luca has the second code.”
“What second code?”
“I don’t know.”
“Stop lying.”
“I’m not!”
Mara closed her eyes.
“You copied my documents.”
Daniel breathed shakily.
“Yes.”
“You forged my signature.”
“Yes.”
“You came into my apartment.”
A long pause.
“Yes.”
Her voice remained steady.
“Why?”
“Victor said he’d kill me if I didn’t.”
“That doesn’t explain the first three years.”
Daniel said nothing.
Mara’s throat tightened.
“The jealousy?”
Silence.
“The screaming?”
“Mara—”
“The night you broke my phone?”
“I was messed up.”
“The holes in the doors?”
“I’m sorry.”
“My wrist?”
His voice cracked.
“I’m sorry.”
Mara stared through the windshield.
“I believe you’re sorry.”
Daniel inhaled.
For one second, relief entered his voice.
Then Mara finished.
“And I’m still never going back.”
Silence.
When Daniel spoke again, he sounded different.
“I know.”
That surprised her.
“I think I knew the day you left.”
“Then why follow me?”
“Because Victor told me if I lost you, everything was over.”
“That still isn’t an excuse.”
“No.”
The simple answer hurt in a strange way.
Daniel whispered, “Mara, I did terrible things because Victor threatened me.”
She said nothing.
“And I did other terrible things because I wanted control.”
Mara closed her eyes.
At least once, the truth.
“I’m going to tell the police everything.”
“If we get out.”
“You will.”
A crash sounded through the phone.
Daniel whispered, “He’s coming.”
“Daniel—”
“Tell Luca Dominic wasn’t the traitor.”
Mara froze.
“What?”
“Dominic tried to stop Victor.”
“Then who betrayed Anthony?”
Footsteps.
Daniel whispered one word.
“Patrick.”
His father.
Then the call ended.
Mara threw open the SUV door.
The driver stopped her.
“Ms. Ellis—”
“Call Luca.”
“He’s inside.”
“Call him.”
The driver obeyed.
No answer.
Mara’s fear sharpened.
Then the warehouse doors opened.
Luca emerged supporting Dominic.
Two guards followed.
Mara ran toward them.
“Where’s Daniel?”
Luca looked surprised.
“How do you—”
“He called.”
Luca turned.
“Search again.”
Dominic looked older than his photograph.
His silver hair was disheveled.
A cut marked his cheek.
He stared at Mara.
“Rose’s daughter.”
Mara stopped.
“You knew me.”
“Yes.”
“You helped fake my mother’s death.”
Pain crossed his face.
“I helped her survive.”
“And then lied to Luca.”
“I was trying to protect him.”
Luca’s voice hardened.
“Enough people have protected me with lies.”
Dominic lowered his head.
“Fair.”
Mara said, “Daniel told me you weren’t the traitor.”
Dominic looked up sharply.
“He said Patrick Mercer betrayed Anthony.”
Dominic closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Luca stared.
“You knew?”
“I learned after.”
“Then why let me believe Rose did it?”
“Because Patrick was dead.”
“That makes no sense.”
“Victor wasn’t.”
Luca stepped closer.
“Explain.”
Dominic looked around.
“Not here.”
A gunshot cracked from inside the warehouse.
Mara froze.
Luca shoved her behind the SUV.
More shots followed.
Security men rushed toward the entrance.
Mara covered her ears.
Her entire body shook.
Then silence.
One of Luca’s men appeared.
“We have Mercer.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
Mara exhaled.
“And Victor?”
“Gone.”
Luca swore.
Daniel was carried out minutes later.
He could walk, barely.
When he saw Mara, his face changed.
She stayed where she was.
He did not approach.
Good.
Police and federal agents began arriving.
Daniel surrendered immediately.
Mara watched officers place him in an ambulance rather than handcuffs.
He looked at her once.
She nodded.
Nothing more.
It was enough.
At dawn, they returned to Luca’s secure apartment.
Dominic sat at the table.
Rose faced him from across the room.
Eighteen years of secrets seemed to sit between them.
Luca placed the ledger down.
“Start.”
Dominic did.
“Patrick Mercer worked for Victor. He discovered Anthony was preparing to expose the accounts.”
Mara said, “He warned Victor.”
“Yes.”
“What happened at the warehouse?”
“Patrick attacked Anthony.”
Luca’s hands tightened.
“Victor?”
“Watched.”
Rose closed her eyes.
Dominic continued.
“I arrived too late.”
“You told me Rose killed him.”
“I told you evidence suggested Rose.”
“That isn’t better.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor threatened you.”
Luca laughed without humor.
“I was twenty-one.”
“He had three men watching you at college.”
Luca stopped.
“Anthony knew that.”
“Yes.”
“And his phone call telling me to leave New York…”
“Was to save you.”
Luca looked away.
Mara understood suddenly that beneath the suit, tattoos, money, and reputation, Luca was still someone’s son receiving the truth twenty years too late.
Dominic continued.
“Patrick died during the struggle.”
“How?”
“Anthony fought back.”
Mara whispered, “So Daniel’s father…”
“Was killed by Anthony.”
That complicated everything.
“Victor then killed Anthony.”
Luca’s face went blank.
Rose cried silently.
Dominic said, “I got Rose out.”
“And the crash?”
“Victor arranged it.”
“You found her.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because the moment Rose appeared alive, Victor would know she still had evidence.”
Luca stared at him.
“You protected the evidence instead of my family.”
Dominic shook his head.
“I protected both badly.”
Nobody spoke.
After a while Mara asked, “What is in the safe deposit box?”
Dominic looked at her.
“The original recording.”
“What recording?”
“Warehouse Twelve had a hidden camera.”
Luca stood.
“You said the footage ended before Victor arrived.”
“The official footage did.”
“There’s another?”
“Anthony installed it himself.”
Rose stared.
“You knew?”
“No.”
Dominic nodded toward the key.
“Helen’s box contains the only copy.”
Mara’s heart pounded.
“Then tomorrow we go to the bank.”
Dominic looked frightened.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor will already be there.”
Mara said, “He still needs me.”
“Yes.”
“Then we use that.”
Luca turned sharply.
“No.”
Mara looked at him.
“You don’t own my decisions.”
“I know.”
“Good.”
“But I am allowed to say when one is terrible.”
She almost smiled.
“Noted.”
By eight-thirty, federal agents had arranged surveillance around Hudson National.
Daniel had given them a statement from his hospital bed.
It named Victor.
It admitted everything Daniel had done.
Mara learned he would face charges.
She felt relief.
That mattered.
Consequences mattered.
So did truth.
At 8:57, Mara walked toward the bank with Luca beside her.
The original key rested in her coat pocket.
Federal agents waited inside and outside.
Victor did not appear.
Nine o’clock passed.
Nine-oh-five.
Nine-ten.
Mara’s nerves tightened.
“Maybe he ran.”
Luca shook his head.
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Men like Victor don’t run when they believe they’re about to win.”
A bank officer approached.
“Ms. Ellis?”
“Yes.”
“We have a problem with your safe deposit box.”
Mara’s stomach dropped.
“What problem?”
The woman looked confused.
“Someone accessed it this morning.”
Luca stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.”
“The records show biometric authorization.”
Mara went cold.
“I wasn’t here.”
The bank officer swallowed.
“I know.”
Mara stared.
“How?”
The woman held up a security photograph.
A woman had entered at 7:42 a.m.
Dark hair streaked with gray.
Mara’s face drained.
Rose.
Her mother.
The photograph showed Rose entering the vault alone.
Mara turned toward Luca.
“No.”
His phone rang.
Dominic.
Luca answered.
“Where is Rose?”
Dominic’s voice came through speaker.
“She’s gone.”
Mara’s phone buzzed.
A message from her mother.
I’M SORRY.
A second message arrived.
DON’T FOLLOW ME.
Then a photograph loaded.
Rose sat beside Victor Saye in the back of a black sedan.
Between them rested Helen’s safe deposit box.
Victor smiled at the camera.
Rose did not.
May you like
Under the picture were five words.
SHE FINALLY KEPT HER PROMISE.
