Chapter 3 - The Debt I Never Owed

The security door opened six inches.
Luca’s men slammed it shut again.
Daniel shouted from outside.
“You think she told you everything?”
Mara stared at Rose.
Her mother had gone completely white.
Luca noticed too.
“Did you kill my father?”
“No.”
Rose’s answer came instantly.
But fear followed it.
Luca stepped closer.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Rose looked at Mara.
“That night was complicated.”
Mara laughed once.
“That sentence has ruined my entire morning.”
Daniel struck the door again.
“Mara!”
She flinched.
Luca’s head snapped toward the sound.
His expression became colder.
“Mara,” Rose said. “Listen to me.”
“I’ve been listening for twenty minutes and every two minutes I find out my life is another lie.”
“I didn’t kill Anthony.”
“Then why does Daniel think you did?”
“Because Victor made sure everyone did.”
Luca stared.
“What happened?”
Rose sat down.
Her hands trembled now.
“Anthony called me the night before the accident. He said Victor knew about the copy.”
“What copy?”
“The original accounting files.”
“I thought you gave them to Anthony.”
“I gave him one set.”
Luca’s voice sharpened.
“There was another?”
Rose nodded.
“Insurance.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
Luca stepped closer.
“You hid evidence against Victor and forgot where?”
“I didn’t hide it.”
“Who did?”
Rose looked at Mara.
“I gave it to Helen.”
Mara stopped.
“Aunt Helen?”
“She promised to keep it until you were safe.”
Mara felt dizzy.
“Helen died two years ago.”
“I know.”
“You knew?”
“I watched the funeral from across the street.”
That hurt so badly Mara could not speak for several seconds.
“You were there?”
Rose cried.
“Yes.”
“You watched me bury the only mother I had left and you didn’t come to me?”
“I couldn’t.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I was being followed.”
“You always have a reason.”
“I know.”
Mara’s voice lowered.
“And somehow every reason still ended with me alone.”
Rose looked down.
That landed.
Luca turned slightly away, granting them a fraction of privacy despite the men around them.
Outside, Daniel stopped pounding.
The sudden quiet was worse.
One of Luca’s guards spoke into his radio.
“He’s gone.”
“Where?” Luca asked.
“Service stairwell.”
“Lock the floor.”
“Already done.”
Luca returned to Rose.
“Tell me about my father.”
Rose nodded.
“The night Anthony died, he asked me to meet him at Warehouse Twelve.”
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“I know that place.”
“He said he had enough to turn Victor over to federal investigators.”
Mara frowned.
“A mafia boss was going to the FBI?”
Luca’s mouth flattened.
“My father preferred prison to being robbed.”
Rose continued.
“When I got there, Anthony was already injured.”
Luca went still.
“How?”
“I don’t know. There had been a struggle.”
“Who else was there?”
“Victor.”
Luca’s face changed.
“And?”
“Daniel’s father.”
Mara stared.
“What?”
“Patrick Mercer.”
She barely remembered Daniel mentioning him.
A businessman.
Dead when Daniel was a teenager.
Or so he had claimed.
“Daniel told me his father died of cancer.”
Rose shook her head.
“He died the same night Anthony did.”
Mara sat back.
“Why?”
“Patrick worked for Victor. He helped move money.”
Luca’s hand tightened around the ledger.
“What happened in the warehouse?”
“Anthony told me to run.”
“And you did?”
“No.”
Rose’s voice broke.
“I tried to help him.”
Luca watched her closely.
“He gave me the ledger. This ledger.”
Everyone looked down at the black book.
“He told me to take it to someone he trusted.”
“Who?”
“Your uncle Dominic.”
Luca’s eyes darkened.
“My uncle said he found the ledger in my father’s safe.”
Rose shook her head.
“No.”
Luca became very still.
Mara recognized the moment he understood another betrayal.
“Dominic lied.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Luca looked toward one of his men.
“Where is Dominic?”
“Boston.”
“Call him.”
The guard stepped away.
Mara turned to Rose.
“How did the ledger end up with Dominic?”
“I delivered it.”
“So he knew you were alive.”
“Yes.”
“For eighteen years.”
“Yes.”
Mara almost admired the scale of the lying.
“So everyone knew except me.”
“No.”
“Daniel knew something.”
“Not everything.”
“Victor knew.”
“Yes.”
“Dominic knew.”
“Yes.”
“And Luca?”
“No.”
Luca looked at Rose.
“Why didn’t Dominic tell me?”
“I don’t know.”
Mara rubbed her forehead.
“And the accident?”
“Victor arranged it the next morning.”
“He tried to kill you.”
“Yes.”
“But you survived.”
“A truck hit my car. I woke in a private clinic two days later.”
“Who took you there?”
“Dominic.”
Luca swore softly.
Rose continued.
“He told me Mara would die if I returned.”
“And you believed him?”
“Yes.”
“Eighteen years?”
“I checked on you.”
Mara’s eyes filled.
“That’s worse.”
Rose looked confused.
“You checked on me?”
“Yes.”
“You saw me with Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“And you knew he was connected to Victor?”
“Not at first.”
“When did you know?”
“Eight months ago.”
Mara stared at her.
“I left Daniel six months ago.”
Rose nodded.
“Because I sent you the apartment listing.”
Mara stopped breathing.
“What?”
“The cheap studio in Queens.”
Mara remembered.
An anonymous email.
One sentence.
AVAILABLE IMMEDIATELY. NO CREDIT CHECK.
She had clicked because Daniel was asleep and she had spent the previous hour sitting on the bathroom floor deciding whether she was brave enough to leave.
“That was you?”
Rose nodded.
“I couldn’t contact you directly.”
Mara’s anger cracked around something softer.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But understanding hurt differently from ignorance.
“You helped me leave.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you come then?”
“Victor started watching you more closely the moment you left Daniel.”
Mara looked at Luca.
“Because Daniel had failed.”
“Probably.”
Luca’s guard returned.
“Dominic isn’t answering.”
“Find him.”
“Yes, sir.”
Mara said, “I want to go home.”
Rose looked alarmed.
“No.”
Mara glared.
“Not your decision.”
Luca said, “Your apartment is compromised.”
“How do you know?”
“Mercer had copies of your documents.”
“That doesn’t mean—”
“He also had photographs of your building.”
Mara stopped.
Luca continued.
“And a key.”
Her stomach dropped.
“He doesn’t have a key.”
“He does now.”
Mara sat down.
The violation felt enormous.
Daniel had always found ways to remain present after she left.
Flowers she had not wanted.
Voicemails from new numbers.
Appearing outside the diner.
Then outside the hotel.
Yesterday he had been waiting near the subway.
Today he had chased her across the lobby.
She had told herself it was getting worse.
She had not understood how much worse.
Luca said, “You can stay here tonight.”
“No.”
“At another property.”
“No.”
“With your mother.”
“Definitely no.”
Rose almost smiled despite everything.
Mara caught it.
“Don’t.”
Rose lowered her eyes.
Luca leaned against the table.
“Then choose somewhere else.”
Mara looked at him.
“You’re letting me choose?”
“It appears important to you.”
A strange laugh escaped her.
“You really don’t know women very well, do you?”
“No.”
“At least you’re honest about one thing.”
That nearly earned a smile.
Nearly.
Her phone rang.
Daniel.
Mara stared at the screen.
Rose whispered, “Don’t answer.”
Mara picked up.
Luca’s eyebrows lifted.
She hit speaker.
“What?”
Daniel sounded breathless.
“Mara, you need to leave Moretti.”
“You chased me into his elevator.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“By chasing me?”
“You don’t understand.”
“That sentence is getting popular today.”
“Mara, listen.”
“No. You listen.”
Her hand trembled.
She hated that.
But she kept going.
“You do not come to my home. You do not come to my job. You do not touch my documents. You do not call me from another number after I block you.”
Silence.
Then Daniel’s voice changed.
The familiar softness.
The voice he used before apologies.
“Mare.”
Her stomach clenched.
“Don’t call me that.”
“I love you.”
“No.”
“I do.”
“You love control.”
“That’s not fair.”
Mara laughed.
“Fair?”
She looked at the bandage on her wrist.
“You grabbed me so hard two nights ago I needed urgent care.”
Rose closed her eyes.
Luca’s expression became deadly still.
Daniel spoke quickly.
“I panicked.”
“You always have a word for what you do.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re always sorry after.”
“Mara—”
“No.”
The single word surprised even her.
Firm.
Clear.
Daniel went silent.
Then the softness disappeared.
“Ask your mother what she traded to stay alive.”
Mara looked at Rose.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You think Rose Ellis survived Victor because she was lucky?”
Rose whispered, “Hang up.”
Mara ignored her.
“Daniel?”
“She gave him something.”
“What?”
Rose stood.
“Mara, stop.”
Daniel said, “Your name.”
The room went silent.
Mara frowned.
“My name?”
“She gave Victor access to you.”
Rose shouted, “That’s a lie!”
Daniel continued.
“Why do you think he knew where you went to school? Where you worked? Who Helen was?”
Mara looked at her mother.
Rose shook her head frantically.
“No.”
“What did you give him?”
“Nothing.”
Daniel laughed.
“Ask her about the agreement.”
“What agreement?”
“Mara—”
“Ask her!”
Mara turned to Rose.
“What agreement?”
Rose looked trapped.
Luca’s voice cut through the room.
“Answer her.”
Rose whispered, “Victor made me sign something.”
Mara’s chest tightened.
“What?”
“A document saying I would never claim the trust.”
“Why?”
“To keep him from killing you.”
Daniel said through the phone, “That’s not all.”
Rose shouted, “Daniel, shut up!”
Mara stared.
Her mother had never shouted like that.
Not when Mara was a child.
Not once.
“What else?”
Daniel spoke slowly.
“She agreed that if you ever accessed account 2047, Victor would receive half.”
Luca grabbed the ledger.
“That provision isn’t here.”
“Because it’s in the side agreement.”
“Where?”
Daniel laughed.
“You’d like that.”
Luca’s eyes hardened.
“I can find you.”
“You haven’t yet.”
The call ended.
Mara stared at Rose.
“Half?”
Rose cried.
“I was desperate.”
“You sold half my future?”
“I saved your life.”
“You didn’t even tell me I had a future to sell!”
“Mara—”
The suite phone rang.
Luca answered.
“Yes?”
He listened.
His expression changed.
“Put it through.”
He handed the receiver to Mara.
“For you.”
“Who is it?”
“A lawyer.”
Mara took it slowly.
“Hello?”
A woman spoke.
“Ms. Ellis, my name is Evelyn Hart. I represented your aunt Helen.”
Mara’s knees weakened.
“Helen?”
“Yes.”
“I handled her estate.”
Mara looked at Rose.
“What is this about?”
“I was instructed to contact you if anyone ever mentioned account 2047.”
Mara’s grip tightened.
“When?”
“Helen left that instruction two years ago.”
“Why didn’t you call before?”
“Because no one had mentioned the account.”
Mara’s breath caught.
“What did she leave?”
“A sealed package.”
“Where?”
“In my office.”
“What’s inside?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then why call me?”
“Because someone attempted to collect it twenty minutes ago.”
Luca was already reaching for his coat.
Mara asked, “Who?”
The lawyer hesitated.
“A man with identification naming him Daniel Mercer.”
Mara’s blood ran cold.
“Did you give it to him?”
“No.”
She exhaled.
“Thank God.”
“But Ms. Ellis…”
“What?”
“He wasn’t alone.”
Mara looked at Luca.
“Who was with him?”
The lawyer lowered her voice.
“An older man carrying a silver cane.”
Victor.
Before Mara could speak, Evelyn continued.
“They’ve just entered the building.”
A sound came through the receiver.
A door opening.
May you like
Then the lawyer whispered, “Oh, God.”
The line went dead.
