Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Disappeared

Luca moved before Mara could speak.
“Car. Now.”
His men obeyed.
Mara grabbed his sleeve.
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“You said I get to choose.”
“This is different.”
“No, it isn’t.”
“Victor may be there.”
“He may be after something Helen left for me.”
“That is exactly why you should stay here.”
Mara stepped closer.
“If everybody had stopped deciding what I could handle eighteen years ago, maybe none of us would be standing here.”
Luca stared at her.
Then nodded once.
“Stay beside me.”
“I’m not promising that.”
“I expected as much.”
Rose said, “I’m coming too.”
Mara turned.
“No.”
Rose flinched.
Mara continued.
“You told me you disappeared to protect me. Fine. Protect me now by staying somewhere safe.”
Rose studied her daughter.
Perhaps she understood the difference between rejection and fear.
She nodded.
“Okay.”
That single word did more for Mara than another argument would have.
Twenty minutes later, a black SUV stopped outside Evelyn Hart’s office building.
Mara had changed out of her hotel apron and into a borrowed black sweater and jeans.
Luca sat beside her.
Two security vehicles followed.
“You always travel like this?”
“Yes.”
“It’s subtle.”
“No one has ever accused me of subtlety.”
Mara glanced at his tattoos.
“I can imagine.”
For the first time all day, Luca actually smiled.
It changed his face.
Not enough to make him harmless.
But enough to remind her he was human.
Then the car stopped.
The smile vanished.
They entered through a private garage.
Evelyn Hart’s office occupied the sixth floor.
Luca’s security had already called police.
Mara noticed that.
“You call the police?”
“When appropriate.”
“I thought people like you avoided them.”
“People like me?”
“Mysterious men with restricted elevators and ledgers full of secret money.”
“That description covers more accountants than criminals.”
Despite herself, Mara laughed.
It lasted three seconds.
Then the elevator doors opened.
Evelyn’s reception area was empty.
A chair lay overturned.
Luca held one arm slightly in front of Mara.
She noticed.
He did not touch her.
“Evelyn?”
No answer.
One of Luca’s men checked the hallway.
“Clear.”
They found Evelyn in the conference room.
Alive.
Shaken.
Her assistant sat beside her.
Mara rushed forward.
“Are you okay?”
Evelyn looked up.
“Mara?”
“Yes.”
The attorney stared at her face.
“You look exactly like Rose.”
Mara almost said she knew.
Instead, “What happened?”
“They came in demanding the package.”
“Daniel and Victor?”
Evelyn nodded.
“Daniel did most of the talking. Victor barely spoke.”
“Did they hurt you?”
“No.”
Luca asked, “Where’s the package?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“And you are?”
“Luca Moretti.”
Her eyes widened.
“Of course you are.”
Mara almost smiled.
Evelyn crossed the room to a framed photograph.
She removed it from the wall.
Behind it was a safe.
“They never found this.”
She entered a code and removed a thick brown envelope.
Across the front, in Helen’s handwriting:
FOR MARA. WHEN SHE KNOWS ABOUT 2047.
Mara touched the words.
Her chest hurt.
Helen had known.
All those years.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
Evelyn answered gently.
“She wanted to.”
“How do you know?”
“She rewrote the instructions seven times.”
Mara closed her eyes.
“Seven?”
“She was afraid.”
“Of Victor?”
“Of everyone.”
Mara opened the envelope.
Inside were three items.
A flash drive.
A key.
And a letter.
She unfolded the letter first.
My darling Mara,
If you are reading this, then the secret has found you before I found the courage to tell you.
Mara stopped.
Her eyes blurred.
Luca quietly moved everyone several steps away.
She continued.
Your mother did not die when you were twelve.
I hated that lie every day I told it.
But I loved you more than I hated myself for lying.
Rose believed Victor would kill you if he knew she had survived. I believed her. For many years, I still do not know whether we were right.
Mara wiped her face.
There was more.
I kept something for Rose.
A record.
Not only of what Victor stole, but of why Anthony Moretti created account 2047.
You were never supposed to become rich from suffering.
The account was intended as restitution.
Mara frowned.
Restitution for what?
She kept reading.
Anthony discovered that Victor had used Rose’s identity to move millions through illegal accounts. When those accounts were exposed, Rose could have been blamed for everything. Anthony created the trust from recovered funds because he knew she had risked her life to expose the scheme.
Mara stared at Luca.
“Your father was protecting my mother.”
Luca nodded slowly.
“So it seems.”
She returned to the letter.
But there is something Rose never knew.
Anthony suspected Victor had another partner.
Someone inside the Moretti family.
Luca became still.
Mara read aloud.
“I believe that person was Dominic Moretti.”
Luca’s face hardened.
Evelyn whispered, “His uncle?”
“Yes.”
Mara continued.
The flash drive contains copies of records Rose gave me. The key belongs to a safe deposit box at Hudson National Bank. If you have reached this point, do not go there alone.
Mara stopped.
The final line was underlined.
Trust Rose with your heart.
Trust Luca Moretti only after he tells you what his father did the night he died.
Mara lowered the letter.
Every eye turned toward Luca.
He stared at the page.
Mara said, “What did your father do?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s convenient.”
“It’s true.”
“Your father dies, my mother disappears, your uncle lies, and Helen specifically warns me about something you know?”
“She didn’t say I know.”
“She said after you tell me.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“There is something.”
Mara waited.
“My father called me that night.”
“And?”
“I was twenty-one.”
“What did he say?”
Luca looked away for the first time.
“He told me to leave New York.”
“Why?”
“He said if anything happened to him, I should never look for the person responsible.”
“That’s strange.”
“Yes.”
“What did you do?”
“I looked.”
“And?”
“I found evidence pointing to Rose.”
Mara’s heart sank.
“What evidence?”
“A security camera showed her entering the warehouse.”
“So did Victor.”
“The recording ended before he arrived.”
“How convenient.”
Luca looked at her.
“Exactly.”
Mara realized he had doubted it.
“For eighteen years?”
“No.”
“When?”
“About five minutes ago.”
Mara almost smiled.
Then Evelyn’s assistant entered.
“There are police downstairs.”
Luca nodded.
“Good.”
“And another person.”
Mara tensed.
“Who?”
“She says she’s Mara’s mother.”
Rose.
Mara exhaled.
“Send her up.”
A few minutes later, Rose entered.
She stopped when she saw Helen’s handwriting.
Her face folded.
“She kept it.”
Mara handed her the letter.
Rose read silently.
Then reached the line about Dominic.
Her hands shook.
“I should have known.”
Luca said, “Why?”
“Because Dominic found me too quickly after the crash.”
“What do you mean?”
“I woke in the clinic and he was there.”
“You thought he rescued you.”
“I did.”
“But?”
Rose stared at him.
“He knew details I never told him.”
“What details?”
“Where the truck hit me.”
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
Mara understood.
“He knew because he arranged it.”
Rose nodded.
“Maybe.”
A police detective arrived to take Evelyn’s statement.
Luca stepped aside voluntarily.
Mara noticed that too.
He was not behaving like the monster stories suggested.
Or maybe monsters came in categories.
Daniel had never worn tattoos.
Never owned a private elevator.
Never had men following him.
But Daniel had made Mara afraid of the sound of keys in her own apartment.
She was beginning to understand danger was not always the man everyone warned you about.
Sometimes danger was the man who knew how to apologize.
After police finished, Evelyn looked at the key.
“Helen rented the safe deposit box under a numbered trust.”
Luca said, “We go tomorrow.”
Mara shook her head.
“We go now.”
“The bank is closed.”
“Then first thing tomorrow.”
Rose said, “Victor knows about the box.”
Mara stared.
“How?”
“He tried to take the envelope.”
Luca looked at the key.
“Then he knows he needs this.”
Mara put it in her pocket.
Luca frowned.
“You’re carrying it?”
“Yes.”
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“Mara.”
“You wanted honesty. Here it is. I trust you more than I did two hours ago, but not enough to hand you the only key to thirty-eight million dollars and evidence involving your family.”
Luca stared at her.
Then nodded.
“Reasonable.”
Rose looked between them.
Something unreadable crossed her face.
Mara caught it.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Mom.”
The word slipped out.
Rose froze.
So did Mara.
Neither commented.
Rose simply said, “Nothing.”
That evening, Luca arranged a secure apartment in another building he owned.
Mara insisted on her own room.
He gave it to her.
Rose took another.
Luca stayed in the living room with two guards.
At midnight, Mara could not sleep.
She found Luca at the kitchen counter reading photocopies from Helen’s envelope.
“You ever sleep?”
“Occasionally.”
“Seems inefficient.”
He looked up.
“You should rest.”
“You sound ninety.”
He handed her a page.
“Look at this.”
It was an old transfer sheet.
Mara read the signatures.
Anthony Moretti.
Rose Ellis.
Dominic Moretti.
Victor Saye.
“What am I looking at?”
“Dates.”
“Explain.”
“The trust was created September third.”
“Okay.”
“My father died September seventh.”
Mara’s stomach tightened.
“Four days.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“The ledger says account 2047 became irrevocable on September sixth.”
“One day before he died.”
“Yes.”
Mara looked at him.
“So Victor couldn’t take the money.”
“Not without you.”
“And I was twelve.”
“Exactly.”
She understood.
“My mother’s accident happened the next day.”
“Yes.”
Mara sat down.
“They killed your father and tried to kill my mother within twenty-four hours.”
“That is what it looks like.”
“And Dominic helped.”
“We don’t know yet.”
“You think he did.”
Luca was silent.
That was enough.
Mara stared at the document.
“Daniel’s father died that night too.”
“Yes.”
“Maybe he knew something.”
“Possibly.”
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Mara’s chest tightened.
Luca saw it.
“Don’t open it.”
She did.
A video file.
She pressed play.
Daniel appeared on-screen.
He was sitting in a dim room.
His face was bruised.
Mara stood.
“Oh my God.”
Someone behind the camera spoke.
Victor.
“Good evening, Mara.”
Luca was already beside her.
The video continued.
“If you want Daniel alive, bring the key to Hudson National Bank at nine tomorrow morning.”
Mara whispered, “Why would he think I care?”
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
Terror in his eyes.
Then he said something that froze her blood.
“Mara, don’t bring the key.”
A hand struck him off-screen.
The camera shook.
Daniel shouted, “The box isn’t money! It’s proof!”
The video cut.
A final image appeared.
A photograph of Luca’s uncle Dominic.
Tied to a chair beside Daniel.
Under it were four words.
ONE KEY. TWO LIVES.
Then another message arrived.
It was from Dominic’s phone.
Luca read it.
His face changed.
Mara looked over.
The message contained only an address.
May you like
And beneath it:
ANTHONY MORETTI ISN’T BURIED WHERE YOU THINK.
