Chapter 9 - The Price of PowerBefore Richard could tighten his finger on the trigger, the heavy glass doors of the office burst open with a resounding crash.

Arthur Montgomery stood in the frame.

He had returned to the office to drop off a forgotten contract, his instincts screaming that something was wrong when he saw the private elevator stopped on the seventy-sixth floor.

He didn't hesitate. Without a single word of warning, Arthur lunged across the room like a striking predator, tackling Richard full-force just as the pistol went off.

Bang!

The bullet shattered the high-rise glass window, sending a spiderweb of cracks across the reinforced pane overlooking the glittering Manhattan skyline.

The two men crashed hard onto the hardwood floor. Richard struggled violently, but Arthur—driven by a terrifying, primal fury that overshadowed all his corporate instincts—pinned the older man's arms to the floor with iron strength, wrenching the pistol from his grip and tossing it across the room.

Within seconds, building security guards—alerted by the gunshot sensors—flooded the office, subduing Richard and dragging him away as he screamed obscenities into the night.

The office fell back into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Arthur stood up slowly, dusting off his suit jacket. A small scratch bled on his knuckles, but he didn't even notice. His breathing was heavy as his gaze locked onto Maya, who stood frozen beside her desk, trembling violently for the first time since he had met her.

In two swift strides, Arthur closed the distance between them, grabbed her by the shoulders, and pulled her tightly against his chest.

“Are you hurt?” Arthur demanded, his voice thick with a raw, unfiltered panic that he had never shown to a single living soul in his entire life. “Maya, look at me. Are you hurt?”

Maya buried her face against his shoulder, letting out a ragged breath as the adrenaline finally crashed through her system. A single tear escaped her eye, tracing a clean path down her cheek.

“I’m... I’m not hurt,” she whispered, her voice shaking. “Arthur... how did you know?”

“I didn't know,” Arthur murmured, holding her even closer, resting his chin against her hair. “I just knew that my life had become completely unimaginable without you in it.”

Maya looked up, meeting his silver-gray eyes, which were no longer cold or calculating, but filled with a profound, undeniable vulnerability and devotion.

The billionaire who had once thought he was invincible realized that his true empire wasn't measured in billions of dollars, but in the woman standing right beside him.
