Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the PastDespite their triumphs, shadows from the past are rarely buried easily.

Late one Friday evening, long after the rest of the trading floor had emptied out, Maya sat at her desk reviewing the final legal frameworks for the global expansion of Thorne Innovations.
The security buzzer at her private office door chimed softly.
Thinking it was just the evening cleaning crew or an assistant dropping off files, Maya didn't look up immediately. “Leave it on the side table, please.”
The door opened. Heavy, uneven footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor.
Maya looked up—and her breath caught in her throat.
Standing in the doorway was a man in his late fifties with sunken eyes, a worn-out trench coat, and an expression of desperate, frantic bitterness.
It was Richard Collins.
Not her father—her uncle, Richard Senior, who had managed the family’s original tech startup a decade ago before Montgomery Meridian’s predatory buyout had crushed it into bankruptcy, leading directly to the family's financial ruin and her father's stroke.
“Uncle Richard?” Maya whispered, standing up slowly from her desk. “What are you doing here? How did you get past security?”
“I used an old visitor pass from the subsidiary records, Maya,” Richard said, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. “I’ve been watching you for months. I’ve been reading the financial papers every single day.”
“Richard, calm down. Let’s talk about this—sit down,” Maya said, her voice shaking as she rounded her desk, sensing the mounting danger.
“Talk? What is there to talk about?!” Richard shouted, his voice echoing off the glass walls. “You sold out! You stood there hand-in-hand with Arthur Montgomery—the man who destroyed our family, the man who stole our life's work—and now you’re sitting in his penthouse office wearing designer suits and playing corporate queen!”
“I didn't sell out, Richard! I infiltrated them! I took control from the inside!” Maya pleaded, stepping toward him. “Look at what we’ve built—we have billions in clean energy, we restored our family name, we—!”
“You betrayed us!” Richard screamed. His hand darted into his trench coat, and before Maya could react, he pulled out a heavy, cold metal pistol, pointing it directly at her chest.

Maya froze. The air left her lungs. Every sound in the Manhattan skyscraper seemed to vanish, replaced by the deafening thud of her own pulse.
“If we couldn't have our empire, Maya,” Richard wept, his finger trembling on the trigger, his eyes wild with madness, “then neither can you.”
