Chapter 2 - THE SPIDER’S WEBThe whisper of a hundred socialites gasping sounded like dry leaves scraping across concrete.

Amanda lunged for the phone, her acrylic nails flashing, but Daniel’s hand shot out, catching her wrist with a grip like a hydraulic press. He didn't squeeze hard enough to break bone, but he held her fast, his eyes burning into hers with a cold, nuclear fury.

"You intercept my mail," Daniel said, every word dripping with ice. "You conspired with my mother to hijack a school charity program just to keep two eight-year-old children away from me before I could walk down the aisle."

"Daniel, listen to me, it was for us!" Amanda shrieked, her mask completely dissolving as the cameras from the live-streamed wedding—still broadcasting to three million viewers online—zoomed in on her distorted face. "Your mother said you needed a clean slate! She said if those kids showed up, the merger with Sterling Global would fall apart! My father would have pulled twenty billion dollars out of Harden Systems!"

In the front row, Eleanor Harden stood up, her face drained of every drop of color.

"Amanda, you absolute fool," Eleanor hissed, her patrician facade finally crumbling into pathetic panic. "Shut your mouth right now—"

"No, you shut up, you old witch!" Amanda spun on Eleanor, her makeup streaked with frustrated tears. "You’re the one who set it all up! You’re the one who forged those emails eight years ago! You’re the one who played that fake audio clip to make Rachel run away!"

The chapel went dead silent.

You could have heard a pin drop on the silk runner.

I felt the floor tilt beneath my feet. Eight years. Eight years of waking up in cold sweats, wondering what I had done wrong, why the man I loved had told a recording device that “a child right now would destroy everything.”

I took three fast steps down the aisle, stopping just behind my daughters.

"What did you say?" My voice was barely a whisper, but it cut through the room like a scalpel.

Eleanor turned slowly to face me, her chin lifting with a last desperate gasp of aristocratic pride. "You were a secretary from an accounting firm, Rachel. A nobody with grease on her fingers and student loans hanging over her head. Daniel was heading a Fortune 500 company at twenty-eight. You were an anchor dragging him to the bottom of the sea. I simply... redirected you."

Daniel didn't look at his mother. He looked at me.

His eyes were wet, swimming with a agony so profound it looked physical. "A fake audio clip?" he choked out. "Mother... what did you do?"

"I saved your legacy," Eleanor snapped, her voice rising hysterically. "I hired a voice-actor from a Chicago theater troupe. I had him replicate your cadence down to a science. I slipped the audio file onto your desktop while you were in Tokyo. And I made sure Rachel heard it before she could show you those ridiculous yellow shoes."

Daniel staggered backward, crashing into the flower arrangement on the altar. A cascade of white roses tumbled down around his shoes, scattering petals across the pristine floor.

"You..." Daniel stared at his mother as if seeing a stranger, a monster wearing a familiar skin. "You stole my life. You stole my wife. You stole my children."

"And I gave you Amanda! I gave you Harden-Sterling Global!" Eleanor screamed back, losing all remaining shreds of her dignity. "Look at you! You're a billionaire! You rule the tech sector! You don't need a pair of whining brats and a small-town nobody!"

"I don't give a damn about the merger," Daniel whispered.

He turned away from his mother, away from Amanda, whose wedding dress now looked like a straitjacket of her own making. He dropped to his knees again, right in front of Betty and Mia.

"Can you..." Daniel’s voice broke completely, a tear finally escaping his eye and tracking down his sharp cheekbone. "Can you ever forgive your dad for being a coward who let people lie to him?"

Mia looked at Betty. Betty looked at Mia.

Then Mia reached out and poked Daniel right in the center of his chest, right where his custom platinum cufflinks glittered.

"You have to take us to Disneyland," Mia announced solemnly. "And buy us ice cream until our teeth hurt. Then we'll think about it."

Daniel let out a ragged, barking laugh that turned into a sob, pulling both girls into his arms and burying his face in their hair.

I stood a few feet away, my heart hammering against my ribs, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

It dropped instantly.
