Chapter 7 - The Autumn Gala

Three weeks later, the Caldwell estate hosted its annual autumn charity gala for the Connecticut Children's Literacy Foundation.

Over three hundred guests—philanthropists, tech executives, community leaders, and local dignitaries—filled the grand ballroom and spilled out onto the illuminated garden terrace. String quartet music drifted through the crisp evening air, and the scent of roasted chestnuts and autumn flowers filled the courtyard.

Ethan stood near the French doors, holding a glass of sparkling water, chatting with the director of the literacy foundation.

Across the terrace, Hannah stood near the garden fountain, wearing an elegant emerald-green evening dress that had been specially selected as part of her new executive wardrobe. She was laughing softly as Thomas handed her a clipboard regarding the evening's catering schedule.

She looked radiant, confident, and completely at home.

As Ethan watched her, a familiar figure materialized near the edge of the terrace—a local society journalist who had caught wind of the canceled wedding drama months ago and was desperately hunting for a gossip scoop.

The journalist, a sharp-faced man in a tuxedo, stepped right up to Hannah with a sly smile.

"Pardon me, aren't you the former housekeeper who... well, let's say managed to survive the great engagement massacre of last month?"

Hannah didn't flinch. She turned calmly to face him, her posture unyielding.

"I am the Director of Estate Operations for the Caldwell residence," Hannah replied, her voice clear, steady, and loud enough to draw the attention of several nearby guests. "And our management priorities focus entirely on operational excellence, staff welfare, and community philanthropy. If you have any questions about the children's literacy foundation, I'd be happy to direct you to our charity liaison."

The journalist blinked, entirely disarmed by her poise and professionalism, and quickly mumbled an apology before melting back into the crowd.

Ethan watched the entire exchange from across the terrace, a deep, genuine sense of pride warming his chest.

He walked over, stepping up beside Hannah as the journalist retreated.

"Handled like a seasoned diplomat," Ethan smiled.

Hannah turned, her green eyes sparkling with amusement. "You learn a few things when you spend your first month managing a multi-million-dollar estate and a billionaire boss."

"Hey, I resent that," Ethan laughed lightly. "I'm very low maintenance now."

"Only because I rewrote your entire lifestyle manual," Hannah teased gently.

They both fell silent for a moment, standing side-by-side as they looked out over the brilliantly lit gardens, the music swelling softly in the background.
