Chapter 6 - A New Chapter at the Estate

By the following Monday, the autumn air had turned crisp and sharp, painting the sprawling grounds of the Caldwell estate in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and crimson.
Hannah Reed stepped out of her silver sedan and walked up the grand stone steps of the mansion.
She wasn't wearing her old gray housekeeping uniform anymore. She wore a tailored charcoal blazer, smart trousers, and carried a leather portfolio case under her arm. Her head was held high, her posture confident and steady.
The heavy front door swung open before she even touched the brass handle.
Thomas Bell stood in the foyer, offering a respectful, welcoming nod. "Welcome back, Miss Reed. Your office in the north wing is all set up."
"Thank you, Thomas," Hannah said, stepping inside. The marble floors gleamed in the morning light, but the heavy, oppressive gloom that had haunted the hallways for months was completely gone.
An hour later, Ethan walked into the north wing study.
The room had been completely transformed. The yoga mats and pastel decor were replaced by a sleek walnut desk, ergonomic seating, a bookshelf filled with administrative and labor law guides, and a large corkboard detailing the new estate management protocols.
Hannah sat at the desk, reviewing a list of incoming maintenance requests from the ground staff.
When she heard the door open, she looked up and smiled.
"Mr. Caldwell. Good morning."
"Good morning, Director Reed," Ethan corrected her with a warm smile, walking over and leaning against the edge of her desk. "How is the new command center treating you?"
"It's incredible," Hannah admitted, her eyes scanning the room with genuine appreciation. "Though it's a lot of responsibility. I've already audited the catering inventory for the upcoming autumn charity gala and restructured the shift rotations so no employee works more than eight hours without a mandatory rest break."
"That's exactly what I wanted to hear," Ethan said approvingly. "If anyone pushes back on those rules—vendor or guest—let me know. My door is always open."
Hannah looked up at him, studying his face for a long moment. The billionaire tech titan who had once been an distant, absentee master of the house was entirely gone. In his place was a man who had learned the hardest lesson of his life—that an empire built on wealth meant nothing if the people sustaining it weren't treated with basic human respect.

"Thank you, Ethan," she said softly, using his first name for the first time. "For giving me a voice in this house."
"Thank you for staying, Hannah," Ethan replied quietly, resting his hand briefly on the edge of the desk before turning toward the door. "Let me know if you need anything at all. I'll be in my office."
