Chapter 5 - The Name in the Dark

Claire heard Evelyn's breathing.

Then Adrian's voice.

"Nobody move."

A flashlight came on.

Vincent stood beside the recorder.

The tape was gone.

The cellar door slammed upstairs.

Adrian ran.

Claire stayed with Evelyn.

Vincent followed Adrian.

Minutes later he returned.

"Whoever it was escaped."

Claire looked at the empty recorder.

"You heard the name."

Vincent shook his head.

"The power died before Thomas said it."

"No."

Claire had heard something.

A syllable.

Maybe two.

Adrian returned holding a torn piece of fabric.

"Black wool."

Every bodyguard wore black.

So did half the men connected to Adrian.

But Evelyn was staring at the cloth.

She signed.

Claire translated.

"Marco's coat."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

Marco was supposed to be in police custody.

A call confirmed he wasn't.

Someone had intercepted the transport.

Daniel's reach extended into law enforcement.

Again.

They couldn't trust police.

They couldn't trust Adrian's organization.

They couldn't trust Bellafonte.

Claire asked the only question that mattered.

"Who can we trust?"

Evelyn pointed at the four of them.

Claire almost laughed.

A waitress.

A crime boss.

A deaf grandmother.

And a man legally dead for twenty years.

Providence had probably seen worse alliances.

Adrian decided to disappear.

They moved to a small house outside Bristol belonging to one of Claire's childhood friends.

No guards.

No drivers.

No Moretti employees.

For the first time Adrian had to protect himself without an army.

And for the first time, he began learning ASL.

Claire taught him.

At first he was terrible.

His hands were stiff.

He overthought everything.

Evelyn laughed when he accidentally signed chicken instead of sorry.

Adrian looked offended.

"What did I say?"

Claire laughed.

"You're apologizing as poultry."

Evelyn laughed harder.

Something changed in Adrian.

He stared at his mother.

Claire realized he had probably never heard her laugh.

Not because Evelyn made no sound.

She did.

But because he had forgotten how to look.

He smiled.

Then tried again.

Sorry.

Evelyn corrected his hand.

Better.

Over the next two days, Adrian learned twenty signs.

Then fifty.

He became obsessed.

Food.

Sleep.

Safe.

Danger.

Remember.

Father.

Son.

Mother.

Forgive.

Claire refused to teach him forgive at first.

"Earn it."

He accepted that.

Vincent watched from the kitchen.

He had more forgiveness to earn than anyone.

On the third night, Evelyn finally sat across from him.

Claire offered to interpret.

Evelyn shook her head.

She handed Vincent a notebook.

He wrote.

She signed.

Claire translated only when necessary.

They talked for three hours.

Twenty years of anger.

Twenty years of grief.

Twenty years of unanswered questions.

Vincent didn't ask Evelyn to forgive him.

That was the first wise thing he'd done.

Later Adrian found Claire on the porch.

"You hate me."

"I don't know you well enough."

"Everyone thinks they know me."

"That's because you worked very hard to make them afraid."

He considered that.

"My father disappeared. Daniel told me weakness killed him. I believed him."

"So you became hard."

"I became useful."

"To Daniel."

That hurt.

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

Claire looked at him.

"You know what your mother wanted?"

"What?"

"You."

He frowned.

"Not the empire. Not the guards. Not the restaurants. Not protection."

Claire raised her hands.

Son.

Adrian stared at the sign.

Then repeated it.

Claire nodded.

"That's what she wanted."

His eyes filled.

He looked away.

Claire let him.

The next morning Evelyn remembered something.

Thomas had made two recordings.

The second wasn't at Bellafonte.

He had given it to someone Claire knew.

Her mother.

Claire felt dizzy.

Her mother's belongings were stored in a unit outside Hartford.

They drove there.

Inside were boxes Claire hadn't opened in years.

Photographs.

Christmas decorations.

Her father's watch tools.

Her mother's recipe books.

Then Claire found an old answering machine.

A cassette remained inside.

She pressed play.

Thomas's voice.

"Anna, if anything happens, give this to Claire when she's ready."

Then another voice.

Daniel Vale.

Claire froze.

The recording captured Daniel threatening Thomas.

But the next voice mattered more.

A woman.

She was warning Daniel.

"Leave Thomas alone."

Daniel answered:

"You created this problem."

The woman said:

"I created Adrian."

Adrian went completely still.

Vincent whispered:

"No."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Claire understood before anyone spoke.

Adrian wasn't Evelyn's biological son.

The recording continued.

The woman identified herself.

Margaret Vale.

Daniel's sister.

Adrian's biological mother.

And she was still alive.

Adrian stepped backward.

"No."

Vincent looked shattered.

Evelyn reached for Adrian.

He pulled away instinctively.

Her face broke.

He immediately regretted it.

But before he could repair the moment, Claire's phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A woman's voice said:

"Tell Adrian his mother would like to meet him."

Claire looked at him.

"Where?"

The woman gave an address.

Then added:

"Come alone."

The call ended.

Adrian stared at Claire.

"Who was it?"

May you like

Claire swallowed.

"Margaret Vale."
