Chapter 4 - What Her Father Knew
"You know."
Claire's voice was barely audible.
Vincent remained silent.
"You know how my father died."
"Claire—"
"Tell me."
Adrian watched him.
Vincent finally spoke.
"Thomas didn't die from an accident."
Claire remembered the official story.
A highway.
Rain.
A truck crossing the median.
Her father killed instantly.
She had been seventeen.
Her mother had died two years later.
Everything she'd believed about her life seemed suddenly constructed by strangers.
"Daniel?"
Vincent nodded.
Claire closed her eyes.
She wanted to scream.
Instead she thought of her father teaching her signs at the kitchen table.
Apple.
School.
Beautiful.
I love you.
Thomas Bennett had made silence feel like a language.
Daniel Vale had used silence as a weapon.
Adrian moved toward Claire.
She stepped away.
"Don't."
He stopped.
"I didn't know."
"Your family did."
"My father did."
"Your father disappeared."
Vincent absorbed the accusation.
He deserved it.
"I should have protected Thomas."
Claire laughed without humor.
"You couldn't even protect your own family."
Evelyn watched their faces.
Claire realized she was excluding her.
She immediately began signing the conversation.
Adrian noticed.
Shame crossed his face.
Claire was furious with him, but she understood that shame.
He had spent decades speaking around his mother instead of with her.
That couldn't be repaired in one night.
But perhaps it could begin.
Adrian raised his hands.
Slowly.
He signed to Evelyn.
Truth.
Then pointed at Vincent.
All.
Evelyn understood.
Vincent told them everything.
Thomas had copied financial records proving Daniel's crimes.
He had planned to testify.
After Vincent disappeared, Thomas fled with Claire.
For eleven years Daniel couldn't find him.
Then Thomas returned secretly to Providence after discovering that Daniel was preparing to take control of Moretti Imports permanently.
Thomas contacted Evelyn.
They met once.
He gave her evidence.
Three days later, he died.
Claire wiped her tears.
"What evidence?"
Evelyn signed.
Not the ledger.
"What, then?"
A recording.
"Where is it?"
Evelyn looked toward the hallway.
Then signed.
Bellafonte.
Claire stared.
"The restaurant?"
Evelyn nodded.
Thomas had hidden the recording somewhere Daniel would never destroy because the building itself was valuable to him.
Bellafonte had once been a bank.
Its original vault remained beneath the wine cellar.
Claire knew the door.
Staff joked about it.
Samuel Reed claimed it hadn't opened in fifty years.
He was lying.
They returned to Bellafonte shortly before dawn.
Police had left.
Samuel Reed was gone.
The manager claimed not to know where.
Adrian led them downstairs.
The wine cellar smelled of oak and stone.
Behind shelves of Burgundy stood the old steel vault.
Claire had seen it hundreds of times.
Evelyn approached the combination dial.
She signed four numbers.
Claire stared.
"Seventeen. Four. Six. Twenty."
Adrian understood.
4-17-06.
The date of Vincent's disappearance.
He entered the combination.
The vault clicked.
Inside were documents.
Cash.
Passports.
And dozens of recordings.
Daniel had been storing blackmail for decades.
Claire found one labeled:
BENNETT / E. MORETTI
Her hands shook.
They played it.
Thomas Bennett's voice filled the cellar.
"If Claire ever hears this, sweetheart, I'm sorry."
Claire collapsed into a chair.
Her father continued.
"I wanted you far away from this. But if you're hearing me, it means Daniel found a way back into our lives."
He explained everything.
Then his voice changed.
"There is one thing Vincent doesn't know."
Vincent leaned forward.
Thomas continued.
"Daniel Vale wasn't acting alone."
A pause.
"The person protecting him is inside the Moretti family."
Adrian stared at Vincent.
Vincent stared back.
The recording continued.
Claire stopped breathing.
Then Thomas spoke the name.

The cellar went black.
