Chapter 3 - The Man Who Died Twenty Years Ago

Adrian stopped breathing.
Claire saw it.
The door opened.
An elderly man stepped inside.
He was thin.
His hair had gone silver.
A scar crossed the right side of his face.
But Adrian knew him.
"Father?"
Evelyn stood.
Her hands flew to her mouth.
Vincent Moretti looked at her.
Twenty years disappeared from his expression.
"Evelyn."
She couldn't hear him.
But she read his lips.
Her knees weakened.
Claire caught her.
Vincent crossed the room.
Adrian blocked him.
"Don't."
Vincent stopped.
Adrian's hands shook.
"You died."
"No."
"You let us believe you died."
"I had no choice."
"Everyone has a choice."
"Not when the alternative is your wife and child being killed."
Silence.
Vincent looked at Evelyn.
"I stayed away because Daniel promised that if I returned, he'd kill both of you."
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"So you trusted Daniel?"
"No. I trusted your mother."
Evelyn signed.
Claire translated.
"She says you promised five years."
Vincent's face collapsed.
"I know."
"Twenty years," Claire translated.
"I know."
"You promised."
"I know."
Evelyn turned away.
Vincent did not touch her.
That restraint told Claire more about him than anything else could have.
Adrian demanded the truth.
Vincent gave it.
Daniel Vale had once been Vincent's closest friend.
Together they built Moretti Imports from a warehouse operation into a regional logistics empire.
But Daniel wanted criminal money.
Vincent wanted out.
When Vincent discovered Daniel had secretly used their routes to move contraband, he gathered records.
Daniel discovered the investigation.
Vincent staged his own death after surviving an attempted murder.
He planned to return once federal authorities arrested Daniel.
They never did.
The evidence disappeared.
Witnesses vanished.
And someone inside law enforcement protected Daniel.
"So you ran," Adrian said.
"I stayed alive."
"You abandoned us."
"Yes."
Vincent didn't defend himself.
That seemed to make Adrian angrier.
Claire watched Evelyn.
She wasn't angry.
Not exactly.
She looked exhausted.
As though she'd carried a suitcase for twenty years and had finally found somewhere to put it down.
Adrian pointed at the photographs.
"Where's the ledger?"
Vincent looked at Evelyn.
"She hid it."
"She doesn't remember where."
Vincent frowned.
"She told me."
"When?"
"The night before the crash."
"Where?"
Vincent looked at the wedding ring.
Then at Adrian.
"Inside the house."
Adrian stared.
"What house?"
"Our old house on Federal Hill."
Adrian's childhood home had been empty for sixteen years.
Daniel had repeatedly offered to buy it.
Adrian had always refused for sentimental reasons.
Now he understood why Daniel wanted it.
The ledger was still there.
They drove across Providence before midnight.
The old Moretti house stood behind iron gates.
Adrian entered first.
Claire followed Evelyn.
Vincent came last.
Dust covered everything.
Adrian moved through the house as if walking through his childhood.
Evelyn led them upstairs.
Into Adrian's old bedroom.
She touched the wall beside the closet.
Then signed.
Claire translated.
"Your height marks."
Adrian looked.
Faded pencil lines remained.
Age ten.
Eleven.
Twelve.
Thirteen.
Fourteen.
Fifteen.
Sixteen.
Beside the final mark was a tiny carved V.
Vincent.
Adrian touched it.
Evelyn pointed lower.
A loose baseboard.
Adrian removed it.
Behind it was a steel box.
Inside lay a leather ledger.
Adrian opened it.
Names.
Payments.
Dates.
Police officers.
Judges.
Businessmen.
Politicians.
Then Claire saw one name she recognized.
Bellafonte.
Her restaurant.
Adrian looked at her.
"How long have you worked there?"
"Four years."
"Who owns it?"
"Samuel Reed."
Vincent went pale.
"What?"
Adrian asked.
Vincent pointed at the ledger.
"Samuel Reed isn't a restaurateur."
"Then who is he?"
"Daniel's accountant."
Claire's stomach turned.
Her quiet workplace had been part of Daniel Vale's network all along.
Her meeting Evelyn wasn't random.
Someone had assigned Claire to that table.
"Why me?" she whispered.
Adrian looked at her.
"Maybe because you sign."
"No one at Bellafonte knows."
Evelyn touched Claire's arm.
Then pointed to Claire's necklace.
A tiny silver hand.
Claire had worn it since her father's death.
Vincent recognized it.
"Where did you get that?"
"My father."
"What was his name?"
"Thomas Bennett."
Vincent sat down.
Adrian noticed.
"You knew him."
Vincent looked at Claire.
"Your father worked for me."
Claire stared.
"No."
"He was an accountant."
"My father repaired watches."
"After he left Providence."
Claire's mouth went dry.
Vincent explained.
Thomas Bennett had discovered Daniel's financial manipulation before Vincent did.
Thomas helped copy the ledger.
Then disappeared.
Claire remembered moving to Connecticut when she was six.
Her father never explained why.
"He knew Evelyn?" Claire asked.
Vincent nodded.
"He taught her sign language after she began losing her hearing."
Claire looked at Evelyn.
The older woman smiled sadly.
Then signed something.
Claire covered her mouth.
Adrian asked:
"What?"
Claire translated.
"She says my father saved her life."
A floorboard creaked downstairs.
Everyone froze.
Adrian's guard called from the hallway.
"Boss?"
A crash followed.
Then silence.
Adrian reached for his weapon.
Vincent turned off the bedroom light.
Claire pulled Evelyn behind the bed.
Footsteps climbed the stairs.
One.
Two.
Three.
A shadow appeared beneath the bedroom door.
Then someone slid a photograph underneath it.
Adrian picked it up.
It showed Claire at age six.
Standing beside her father.
On the back were five words:
ASK HER HOW THOMAS DIED.
May you like
Claire looked at Vincent.
He wouldn't meet her eyes.
