Chapter 6 - The Deal Behind the Locked Door

Claire called Adrian.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
She called Daniel.
Within twenty minutes, they were driving toward Robert's residence.
"Claire, you shouldn't be doing this."
"I spent months letting men decide what I should know."
Daniel didn't argue again.
They reached the estate at 3:01 a.m.
Adrian's car was outside.
Claire's anger burned hotter.
She entered.
A housekeeper recognized her and reluctantly pointed toward Robert's study.
Voices came from behind the closed door.
Robert.
Then Adrian.
Claire stopped.
"You want the drive," Adrian was saying.
"Yes."
"And in exchange?"
"Claire disappears from all family litigation."
"Permanent?"
"Permanent."
Claire's stomach dropped.
Robert continued.
"Give me the drive and I sign everything."
"And the company?"
"You keep control."
Claire pushed open the door.
Both men turned.
Adrian stood immediately.
"Claire?"
She looked at him.
"You came here to trade my evidence?"
"No."
"I heard you."
"You heard half."
Robert smiled.
"Then perhaps Adrian should explain."
Claire looked at her husband.
Adrian reached into his coat.
He removed a drive.
Claire stared.
"How did you get that?"
"I didn't."
He tossed it onto Robert's desk.
Robert frowned.
Adrian said, "It's empty."
Claire understood.
Robert did not.
Adrian continued.
"I came because I needed him on record offering to bury evidence."
He tapped his phone.
Recording.
Robert's face changed.
"You son of a—"
"My father's son?"
Adrian looked at him.
"That's exactly what I'm trying not to be."
Robert moved toward the phone.
Adrian stepped between them.
"No."
Robert stopped.
Claire stared at Adrian.
"You should have told me."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because if Robert knew you knew, he wouldn't talk."
"You still used me as part of a plan."
Adrian's expression fell.
"You're right."
Claire was stunned by how quickly he accepted it.
"No excuses?"
"No."
Robert laughed.
"This is touching."
Claire turned toward him.
"You're finished."
"You think one recording destroys me?"
"No."
Daniel entered.
"The records do."
Robert's confidence disappeared.
Daniel held up his phone.
"The documents were delivered to federal investigators forty minutes ago."
Robert stared at Claire.
"You'll destroy your husband's company."
Adrian answered.
"If accountability destroys it, it deserves to be destroyed."
Robert looked between them.
Then laughed bitterly.
"You two deserve each other."
Claire flinched.
Adrian didn't.
"Maybe someday," he said. "But that isn't my decision."
Police arrived before dawn.
Robert wasn't arrested immediately, but investigators seized records and devices.
The scandal broke forty-eight hours later.
Cole Capital's shares plunged.
Reporters gathered outside headquarters.
Adrian held a press conference.
Claire watched from Eleanor's guesthouse.
He didn't blame Robert alone.
He acknowledged his father's misconduct.
He announced an independent restitution fund.
He stepped down temporarily as CEO while investigators reviewed company history.
Financial commentators called it corporate suicide.
Claire saw something else.
For the first time, Adrian chose truth when lying would have been easier.
But truth didn't repair marriage overnight.
Weeks passed.
Claire's pregnancy reached thirty-five weeks.
Then thirty-six.
Adrian rented a modest apartment near the hospital.
He sold the Bentley.
Not as a grand gesture.
He simply couldn't look at it anymore.
He attended counseling.
Alone.
Claire learned this from Eleanor, not him.
That mattered.
He wasn't performing for her.
At thirty-seven weeks, Claire invited Adrian to dinner.
They sat at Eleanor's kitchen table.
No lawyers.
No family.
No Vanessa.
Claire asked, "Why did you sell the Bentley?"
"Bad memories."
"The car didn't cheat on me."
"No."
Adrian looked at her.
"I did."
She appreciated that he still refused to soften the language.
"Do you want me back?"
"Yes."
"Then why haven't you asked?"
"Because wanting you doesn't entitle me to ask you to forget what happened."
Claire looked down.
"What if I never trust you again?"
"Then I'll still be a good father."
"What if I divorce you?"
"I'll sign."
"What if I meet someone else someday?"
That hurt him.
She saw it.
But he answered.
"I'll hate it privately."
Claire laughed despite herself.
Adrian smiled.
It was the first time they had laughed together since the airport.
Their daughter kicked.
Claire touched her belly.
Adrian watched.
"Want to feel?"
His smile vanished.
"Really?"
Claire nodded.
He moved beside her.
She guided his hand.
The baby kicked.
Adrian's eyes filled.
"She's strong."
"She enjoys kicking my ribs."
"Definitely a Cole."
Claire gave him a look.
"Or a Bennett."
"Hopefully."
The answer surprised her.
"Why hopefully?"
"Because Bennetts apparently know when to leave bad situations."
Claire looked at him.
There was sadness beneath his humor.
That night Adrian drove home alone.
Claire watched from the window.
Eleanor approached.
"You love him."
Claire sighed.
"Love isn't the problem."
"No."
"Trust is."
Eleanor nodded.
"Then don't confuse forgiveness with permission."
Claire turned.
"What?"
"You can forgive someone without promising they'll never lose you again."
Claire thought about that.
Three days later, at 4:12 in the morning, Claire woke with contractions.
Real ones.
Eleanor drove her to the hospital.
Claire called Adrian herself.
"My water broke."
He arrived before they finished admitting her.
This time Claire reached for his hand without hesitation.
Labor lasted eleven hours.
At 3:26 p.m., their daughter was born.
Healthy.
Six pounds, nine ounces.
Claire cried.
Adrian sobbed openly.
The nurse placed the baby against Claire's chest.
Adrian stared at his daughter as if the universe had condensed into six pounds of breathing life.
"What's her name?" the nurse asked.
Claire looked at Adrian.
They had once chosen Olivia Catherine Cole.
Now Claire wasn't sure.
Adrian seemed to understand.
"Whatever you choose."
Claire looked down at her daughter.
"Catherine Olivia Bennett Cole."
Adrian smiled through tears.
"Perfect."
Later, while Claire slept, Adrian held Catherine.
He whispered something Claire wasn't meant to hear.
"I'll spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to wonder whether your father chose you."
Claire's eyes opened.
She remained silent.
Then Adrian's phone vibrated.
He checked it.
His face changed.
Claire sat up.
"What?"
He hesitated.
"Adrian."
He showed her.
A message from the investigator handling Robert's case.
We found another beneficiary in Richard Cole's private trust.
Claire frowned.
"Who?"
Adrian opened the attached document.
Then stared at the name.
May you like
It was someone both of them knew.
Someone who had been standing near them almost from the beginning.
