Chapter 4 - The Door Outside Room 814

"Claire, don't open it."

Adrian was already grabbing his keys.

"I'm not."

"Call hotel security."

"I did."

"Stay away from the door."

Claire stood inside Room 814 of the Langford Hotel, one hand around her phone and the other protecting her belly.

Another knock.

"Claire."

Robert Cole.

She recognized his voice.

"Go away."

"We need to discuss what you took."

"I didn't take anything from you."

"You have property belonging to Cole Capital."

Claire's eyes moved toward her handbag.

Inside was a small encrypted drive.

She hadn't stolen it.

Richard Cole had given it to Samuel years earlier with instructions that it be released if the Bennett agreement ever became contested.

Samuel had given it to Claire.

It contained records.

Transfers.

Internal correspondence.

Proof of what Richard had done.

And proof Robert had helped conceal it.

"Claire," Robert said, "opening that file will hurt Adrian too."

Her expression changed.

That was the threat.

Not physical violence.

Collateral damage.

Adrian's companies employed thousands.

A scandal could destroy pensions, contracts, jobs.

Robert knew Claire would care.

"That's why you're here?" she asked through the door.

"Yes."

"To protect Adrian?"

"To protect everyone."

"You should have thought about everyone before threatening my child."

Robert went silent.

Hotel security arrived minutes later.

Robert left without resistance.

Adrian arrived twenty-three minutes after that.

He stepped from the elevator and saw Claire standing at the far end of the hallway with two security officers.

He stopped.

Claire looked at him.

Neither moved.

Adrian wanted to embrace her.

He didn't.

Instead he asked, "Are you okay?"

"Yes."

"The baby?"

"She's moving."

Relief crossed his face.

Claire noticed.

It complicated her anger.

"Robert left?"

"Security escorted him out."

Adrian nodded.

"Good."

He remained several feet away.

Claire appreciated that.

"You drove here?"

"Yes."

"You didn't bring Vanessa?"

The question slipped out sharper than she intended.

Adrian accepted it.

"No."

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

Claire looked toward her room.

"You usually know."

He had no defense.

"You're right."

They entered the room.

Adrian remained near the door.

Claire sat.

Pregnancy made exhaustion arrive suddenly now.

He noticed her hand press against her lower back.

"Do you need anything?"

"No."

"Water?"

She almost told him no again.

Then nodded.

He poured it.

That simple act felt strange.

For years Adrian had solved problems with money.

Private doctors.

Drivers.

Assistants.

Reservations.

Connections.

Now all Claire wanted from him was honesty.

He sat across from her.

"Samuel told me everything."

"Everything?"

"About your mother. My father. Robert. The trust."

Claire looked down.

"Then you know why I left."

"I know one reason."

Her eyes lifted.

Adrian continued.

"The other reason is me."

Silence.

"I won't combine them."

Claire frowned.

"What?"

"I won't hide behind Robert and pretend you left because my family frightened you. You left because I betrayed you."

Her eyes filled.

Adrian looked away briefly.

"I'm sorry."

"You've said that."

"I know."

"Sorry doesn't reverse six months."

"I know."

"It doesn't erase hotel rooms."

"I know."

"It doesn't erase me sitting alone at prenatal appointments while you told me you were in meetings."

His face tightened.

"I know."

Claire finally cried.

Quietly.

"I kept defending you."

Adrian couldn't breathe.

"My friends noticed you were gone more. My doctor asked whether you would attend the next ultrasound. Your mother asked why you missed dinner."

She wiped her cheek.

"And every time, I defended you."

Adrian lowered his head.

"I don't deserve that."

"No."

"I know."

For a long time neither spoke.

Then Claire asked, "Did you love Vanessa?"

Adrian answered immediately this time.

"No."

"Then why?"

He struggled.

Not because he didn't know.

Because the truth was ugly.

"Because she made everything easy."

Claire stared.

"No expectations. No history. No baby coming. No responsibilities."

"So I became responsibility."

"You became the person whose opinion mattered most."

"That makes no sense."

"It does if you're a coward."

Claire went silent.

Adrian continued.

"The more terrified I became about becoming a father, the more I worked. The more I worked, the more distant we became. Vanessa admired everything about my life that suddenly felt like a trap."

Claire flinched.

"Our daughter felt like a trap?"

"No."

Adrian leaned forward.

"The possibility of failing her did."

That was the first thing he'd said that Claire hadn't expected.

"My father failed me in ways I didn't understand until tonight. I spent my entire life trying to become stronger than him. Then I became exactly like him in another way."

Claire studied him.

"Secrets."

"Yes."

He looked toward her handbag.

"Robert mentioned a drive."

Claire stiffened.

"I won't ask you to give it to me."

"Good."

"But if you release it, innocent employees could get hurt."

"I know."

"So what are you planning?"

"I haven't decided."

Adrian nodded.

"I'll help."

"Why should I trust you?"

"You shouldn't."

The answer surprised her.

"Not yet."

He stood.

"But you should have options."

"What options?"

"I control fifty-one percent of Cole Capital."

"Robert controls the board."

"Until nine tomorrow morning."

Claire stared.

"What are you doing?"

"Calling an emergency meeting."

"Adrian—"

"He threatened you."

"This isn't revenge."

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

"It's accountability."

He walked toward the door.

Claire called his name.

He stopped.

"Where are you going?"

"Home."

She seemed surprised.

"You're leaving?"

"You need sleep."

"And Robert?"

"I'll put security downstairs."

"I don't want your men following me."

"They won't. Hotel security only."

He opened the door.

"Adrian."

He looked back.

Claire placed a hand over their daughter.

"She's kicking."

His expression broke.

For one second, he looked like the man she had married.

Claire almost invited him closer.

Almost.

Instead she said, "Good night."

Adrian nodded.

"Good night, Claire."

The following morning, Cole Capital's board assembled at 8:55.

Robert arrived smiling.

At 9:02, he wasn't smiling anymore.

Adrian presented Samuel's documents.

At 9:17, he called for Robert's removal as chairman pending investigation.

At 9:31, the vote passed.

Robert stood.

"You have no idea what you've done."

Adrian remained seated.

"I've stopped pretending this family is entitled to bury everything."

Robert leaned across the table.

"Claire won't forgive you."

"This isn't about earning forgiveness."

"Then why destroy your father's legacy?"

Adrian looked around the room.

"Because some legacies deserve to end."

Robert walked out.

At 10:06, Adrian signed documents permanently removing his unborn daughter from the contested family trust.

At 10:18, he waived any marital claim to Claire's inherited assets.

At 10:23, he instructed Daniel Mercer to send every document directly to Claire.

No conditions.

No request for a meeting.

No bargaining.

At noon, Claire received them.

She read Adrian's signature three times.

Then Daniel handed her another envelope.

"What's this?"

"He delivered it personally."

Claire opened it.

One page.

No legal language.

Claire,

I spent months making choices for myself and expecting you to absorb the consequences.

These documents are the first choices I'm making without asking you to give me anything back.

You and our daughter are free from my family's claims.

Whatever happens to our marriage, I will never use money, custody, or power to trap you.

Adrian.

Claire folded the letter.

Daniel watched her.

"Does it change anything?"

"It changes something."

"What?"

"I don't know yet."

Her phone rang.

Hospital.

Claire answered.

Her face changed.

"What?"

Daniel stood.

Claire listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

"My doctor wants me admitted."

"Why?"

Claire looked down at her belly.

"I've been having contractions."

Daniel grabbed his keys.

They reached the elevator.

The doors opened.

Claire stepped inside.

Then she suddenly doubled over.

May you like

Her water broke.

And she was only thirty-one weeks pregnant.
