Chapter 5 - The Call Adrian Feared Most

Adrian was leaving Cole Capital when Daniel called.

"Claire's in the hospital."

Everything inside him stopped.

"What happened?"

"Preterm labor."

Adrian was already moving.

"Which hospital?"

Daniel told him.

Adrian arrived fourteen minutes later.

He ran into maternity reception.

A nurse stopped him.

"Relationship?"

"Husband."

"Patient's name?"

"Claire Cole."

The nurse checked.

Then hesitated.

"She's requested limited visitors."

Adrian froze.

Of course.

"Is she safe?"

"I can't provide medical information without authorization."

"I'm the baby's father."

"I understand."

Adrian stepped back.

He would not force himself into Claire's room.

Not tonight.

He sat in the hallway.

One hour passed.

Then two.

At 3:42 p.m., Eleanor arrived.

"Where is she?"

"Inside."

"Why aren't you with her?"

"She didn't ask for me."

Eleanor sat beside him.

At 4:10, Daniel emerged.

Adrian stood.

"How is she?"

"Stable."

"The baby?"

"Doctors are trying to stop labor."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"Can I see her?"

Daniel studied him.

"I'll ask."

Ten minutes later, Daniel returned.

"She said yes."

Adrian entered quietly.

Claire looked tiny beneath the hospital blankets despite her pregnancy.

Monitors surrounded her.

He stopped near the door.

"Hi."

"Hi."

"Daniel said you're stable."

"For now."

Adrian nodded.

He wanted to touch her hand.

He didn't.

"Are you scared?" he asked.

Claire laughed weakly.

"Terrified."

"So am I."

She looked at him.

Adrian pulled a chair closer but left space between them.

"I'm not going anywhere."

"You have work."

"No."

"Adrian."

"There is nowhere I'm supposed to be more than here."

Claire looked toward the monitor.

"Funny."

He absorbed it.

"Yes."

Another contraction came.

Claire gripped the bedrail.

Adrian instinctively reached forward.

Then stopped.

Claire noticed.

After several seconds, she extended her hand.

He took it.

Nothing romantic happened.

No miraculous forgiveness.

A frightened pregnant woman simply needed another human being.

Adrian stayed.

Through every examination.

Every medication.

Every alarm.

At midnight, doctors believed labor had slowed.

At 2:00 a.m., Claire slept.

Adrian sat beside her.

At 5:30, she woke and found him still there.

"You didn't leave."

"No."

"Vanessa called you."

Adrian glanced at his phone.

He had ignored seven calls.

"She doesn't matter."

"She mattered enough before."

"You're right."

Claire turned away.

Adrian didn't defend himself.

At 8:00, the doctor brought cautious good news.

The contractions had slowed significantly.

Their daughter could remain where she belonged.

Claire cried with relief.

Adrian cried too.

He didn't hide it.

Three days later, Claire was discharged on strict instructions to rest.

Adrian expected her to return to the hotel.

Instead, Eleanor offered Claire her guesthouse.

Claire accepted.

Adrian didn't visit unless invited.

He attended every prenatal appointment Claire allowed.

Sometimes they spoke.

Sometimes they didn't.

Vanessa disappeared from public view.

Then, two weeks later, Claire received a package.

No return address.

Inside was the diamond bracelet.

And a note.

Ask Adrian what he promised me.

Claire stared at it.

Her pulse accelerated.

She called Adrian.

He answered immediately.

"Claire?"

"What did you promise Vanessa?"

Silence.

"Adrian?"

"Where did you hear that?"

"She sent me the bracelet."

Adrian swore quietly.

"What did you promise her?"

"Nothing that matters now."

"Wrong answer."

He sighed.

"Before you discovered us, Vanessa asked me to leave you."

Claire closed her eyes.

"And?"

"I told her I would."

Silence.

"When?"

"The week before the airport."

Claire's voice became almost inaudible.

"You were going to leave me?"

"I said it."

"That's not what I asked."

Adrian struggled.

"I don't know."

Claire hung up.

Adrian called back.

She didn't answer.

That evening, someone arrived at Eleanor's gate.

Vanessa.

Claire watched through the window as security tried to turn her away.

Vanessa raised an envelope.

"I need to give this to Claire."

Eleanor wanted her gone.

Claire surprised everyone.

"Let her in."

Vanessa entered the guesthouse.

Without diamonds and couture, she looked younger.

Tired.

She placed the envelope on the table.

"I'm not here to fight."

Claire said nothing.

"I lied to you."

"That doesn't narrow it down."

Vanessa winced.

"Adrian didn't tell me he was going to leave you."

Claire frowned.

"You just sent me a note saying—"

"I wanted you angry enough to ask him."

"Why?"

"Because I needed to know what he'd tell you."

Claire stared.

Vanessa continued.

"He did say he would leave you. But I knew he didn't mean it."

"How?"

"Because every time I asked when, he changed the subject."

Claire felt no comfort.

Vanessa pushed the envelope toward her.

"There's something else."

Inside were printed messages.

Not between Vanessa and Adrian.

Between Vanessa and Robert.

Claire looked up.

"Robert contacted you?"

"Three months ago."

"When?"

"Right after he realized you knew about the trust."

Claire read.

Robert had encouraged Vanessa to stay close to Adrian.

To distract him.

To deepen the affair.

Claire's stomach turned.

"Did he pay you?"

Vanessa's face hardened.

"No."

"Then why cooperate?"

"Because I wanted Adrian."

The honesty was brutal.

Vanessa looked ashamed.

"Robert told me your marriage was already over. He said you were planning to take Adrian's daughter and destroy the company."

"And you believed him?"

"I believed what I wanted to believe."

Claire understood that better than she wished she did.

"Why show me now?"

"Because Robert called me this morning."

Vanessa pushed another phone across the table.

A recorded voicemail.

Robert's voice.

If Claire releases that drive, everyone loses. You, Adrian, all of us. I need you to help me get it before she makes another mistake.

Claire looked at Vanessa.

"What did you tell him?"

"That I was done."

"Why?"

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"Because I finally realized Adrian never belonged to me."

Claire stiffened.

Vanessa corrected herself.

"Not belonged. That's the problem. I kept treating him like something to win."

She stood.

"I'm sorry."

Claire didn't say she forgave her.

She didn't.

But she believed the apology was real.

Vanessa left.

Claire called Daniel.

"We release the evidence."

"All of it?"

"Everything that proves Robert's involvement. Protect employees where possible."

Daniel nodded.

"I'll prepare it."

That night, Claire slept badly.

At 2:17 a.m., her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Adrian entering a building.

Timestamp: ten minutes earlier.

Claire recognized the address.

Robert's private residence.

Then came a message.

Your husband just went to make a deal.

Claire stared at the screen.

May you like

A second message appeared.

And you're what he's trading.
