Chapter 8 - A Future Earned

One year later.
The summer sun streamed through the stained-glass windows of the coastal villa in Amalfi, Italy. The ocean below was a brilliant shade of turquoise, sparkling like millions of crushed diamonds.
In the lush garden overlooking the Mediterranean, a seventeen-year-old boy was kicking a soccer ball with two young men from the local town. His laughter rang loud and clear through the warm afternoon air.
He was tanned, energetic, and completely healthy. There was no sign of the pale, dying boy who had spent years hooked up to hospital monitors in New York.
I stood on the stone balcony, holding a glass of fresh lemonade, watching Leo run across the grass without losing his breath once. Every time I saw him like this, a quiet prayer of gratitude filled my heart.
Two warm, strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me back against a broad, solid chest. Dante buried his face into the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply.
“He’s getting better at soccer,” Dante murmured softly, his voice warm against my skin. “Though he still insists he’s going to beat my sports car in a race next week.”
I laughed, leaning back into his embrace. “He’s sixteen and full of life, Dante. You gave him that.”
“We gave him that,” Dante corrected, kissing the side of my neck before turning me around in his arms to face him.
Dante looked different than he had a year ago. The dark circles under his eyes were gone. The sharp, terrifying tension in his shoulders had softened into a steady, relaxed strength. Thorne Global was dead, its assets liquidated to fund pediatric healthcare foundations across the country. And Moretti Enterprises was thriving under a new, ethical leadership model that Dante and I built together.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
I blinked, my breath catching. “Dante... we’re already engaged. The press still thinks—”
“I don't care about the press, Maya,” Dante interrupted gently. He opened the box to reveal a simple, breathtaking band of pure rose gold, set with a single, glowing emerald that matched the dress I had worn the night he fell in love with me.
He took off the massive six-carat corporate diamond I had been wearing for the media and slipped the delicate rose gold ring onto my left ring finger. It fit perfectly.
“The first ring was a business contract,” Dante said, looking into my eyes with a depth of love that made my soul soar. “It was born from revenge, debt, and darkness. But this ring... this ring is a promise. A promise that you will never have to fight alone again. That you will never have to choose between survival and love.”
He dropped to one knee on the warm marble balcony, holding my hand tightly in his.
“Maya Lin,” Dante Moretti said, his voice filled with unwavering devotion. “Will you do me the honor of becoming my real wife? Not for the board. Not for revenge. But because I am completely, irrevocably in love with you.”
Tears of pure happiness filled my eyes, spilling over my cheeks, catching the bright Italian sunlight. I looked down at the man who had pulled me out of the abyss, the man who had fought the world to give my family a future.

“Yes,” I whispered, dropping to my knees beside him, wrapping my arms around his neck and pressing my lips to his. “Yes, Dante. A thousand times, yes.”
Down in the garden, Leo kicked the soccer ball high into the sky, shouting with joy as the sun warmed the earth below us. The nightmare was finally over. Our future didn't belong to the ghosts of our past—it belonged entirely to us.
