Chapter 5 - The Viper's Strike

The next three weeks moved in a blur of intense training and sudden closeness. Dante hired private tutors to teach me elite corporate etiquette, media management, and self-defense. But the real shifts happened in the quiet hours after midnight.

When I couldn't sleep, terrified of Leo’s upcoming surgery, I would find Dante in his massive glass library, working through stacks of legal files. He didn't act like the terrifying monster the media painted him to be. He made me tea. He listened to me talk about Leo’s childhood. He taught me how to read financial balance sheets so I could understand how he was trapping Thorne Global.

Slowly, the golden cage began to feel like a sanctuary. And the man who owned it began to feel less like a captor and more like a protector.

Then, two days before Leo’s surgery, the trap sprung.

I was sitting in the penthouse lounge, reviewing documents for the upcoming Moretti board meeting, when four men in dark suits stepped out of the elevator. They were accompanied by Marcus—my former manager from the restaurant—and two officers from the NYPD.

“Maya Lin?” one of the officers asked, holding up a badge.

I stood up, my pulse spiking. “Yes? What’s happening?”

Marcus stepped forward, his face twisted in a smug grin. “She’s the one, officer. I told you.”

“Maya Lin, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, grand larceny, and the illegal transfer of proprietary medical data from Moretti Enterprises to Thorne Global,” the officer announced, stepping forward with handcuffs.

“What? That’s impossible!” I backed away, my head spinning. “I haven't stolen anything!”

“We have security footage of you accessing Mr. Moretti’s private office last night at 2:00 AM,” Marcus sneered. “And Mr. Arthur Thorne just released a sworn statement showing that thirty million dollars worth of Moretti trade secrets were emailed from your private IP address to his firm this morning.”

My breath hitched in my throat. Vanessa. It had to be Vanessa.

“Where is Dante?” I demanded, tears of panic brimming in my eyes. “Call Dante!”

“Mr. Moretti is currently at the district attorney’s office,” the police officer said coldly. “He’s the one who authorized the investigation after his security team flagged the breach.”

The words hit me like a physical blow. Dante authorized it?

Before I could process the betrayal, the officers grabbed my arms and forced my hands behind my back. The metal handcuffs snapped cold and heavy against my wrists.

As they dragged me toward the elevator, I looked at Marcus. He leaned in, whispering so only I could hear: “Vanessa Thorne sends her regards, sweetheart. Did you really think a billionaire was going to keep a dirty waitress around forever? You were just a pawn to him. And now, your brother dies on the operating table without his money.”

They threw me into the back of a police cruiser. The flashing blue lights painted the rain-slicked city streets in chaotic shades of red and blue.

Sitting in the dark cell at the precinct hours later, shivering in my emerald silk blouse, my heart felt completely shattered. Not because I was in jail. But because I had let myself believe that Dante Moretti’s dark gold eyes held truth. I had let myself fall in love with my executioner.
