Chapter 7 - Light in the Shadows

Two hours after the dramatic collapse of Thorne Global, I was sitting on the plush leather couch in Dante’s private office, my hands still trembling from the adrenaline.
The door opened quietly, and Dante walked in. He took off his suit jacket, tossing it onto his desk, before walking over and kneeling right in front of me on the hardwood floor.
“I’m sorry,” he said quietly.
I looked at him, confused. “For what? You saved me. You proved I was innocent.”
“I had to let them arrest you for twelve hours, Maya,” Dante said, his voice laced with genuine pain. “If Arthur Thorne didn't believe his trap had worked, he never would have filed those false documents today. He never would have brought the fabricated evidence to the board meeting where the FBI was waiting. I had to make the world believe I abandoned you so he would expose himself.”
He took my small hands into his large, warm palms. “I knew you were terrified in that cell. And knowing I put that fear in your eyes burned a hole in my chest.”
I looked into his gold eyes and saw something I had never seen in him before: vulnerability. The cold, unfeeling billionaire who ruled New York with an iron fist was kneeling before me, begging for forgiveness.
“Did you mean what you said in the limo?” I asked softly. “That I was just an asset?”
Dante reached up, his thumb tenderly tracing the silver line of my scar. “When I first saw you in that restaurant, bloody and bruised, standing up to Vanessa with pure fire in your eyes, I thought you were a tool for revenge. But over these past weeks... watching you care for your brother, watching you learn, watching you smile in this cold apartment... you stopped being my asset, Maya.”
“What am I now?” I whispered, my heart thumping against my ribs.
“My center,” Dante confessed, his voice rough with emotion. “My home. The only thing in this miserable world I cannot live without.”
Before I could answer, his phone chimed on the desk. Dante looked at the screen, and a soft, genuine smile broke across his rugged features—a sight so rare and beautiful it took my breath away.
“It’s the hospital,” Dante said quietly, looking back at me. “Leo’s surgery just finished. Dr. Vance says the heart reconstruction was a complete success. He’s in recovery, fully stable, and asking for his sister.”
A sob broke from my throat—not of pain, but of pure, overwhelming relief. The years of fear, debt, darkness, and despair evaporated in a single second.
I threw my arms around Dante’s neck, burying my face into his shoulder. He wrapped his arms tightly around my waist, lifting me off the couch and holding me close against his chest as I cried tears of joy.

“Thank you,” I sobbed against his skin. “Thank you for saving him.”
“He’s my family now too, Maya,” Dante murmured into my hair, holding me tighter. “I will protect both of you for the rest of my life.”
