Chapter 17 - THE BUNKER UNDER THE GLASS

Nathan was released at four eighteen in the afternoon.

He walked out of the courthouse wearing the same suit in which he had been arrested, except the collar was wrinkled and one sleeve carried a faint gray mark from the holding cell wall.

Grace waited beyond the security doors with Lily beside her.

Nathan stopped when Lily saw him.

The child ran.

She did not hesitate this time.

"Daddy Nathan."

Nathan crouched just before she reached him.

Lily hit his chest with enough force to rock him backward.

He wrapped both arms around her carefully.

For two days he had wondered whether he had earned the right to hold her.

Lily apparently had no interest in his legal analysis.

"You were helping police," she said into his jacket.

"I was."

"Did you find the bad papers?"

Nathan looked over her head at Grace.

"Some of them."

Lily leaned back.

"Mommy says papers can lie."

Nathan almost laughed.

"Your mommy is right."

Grace approached more slowly.

Her sling was still in place.

"You look terrible."

"That is the warmest thing you have said to me this week."

She gave him the faintest smile.

Then Owen hurried through the courthouse doors.

The smile vanished.

"We have authorization to enter the Brighton property," Owen said.

Nathan stood.

"And my release condition?"

"Allison is asking Judge Price for a limited emergency modification because of the biometric override."

"How long?"

"Minutes, hopefully."

Nathan looked at Grace.

She already knew what he wanted to do.

"Go," she said.

"I just got out."

"And if those servers are destroyed, you may go back in."

Nathan looked at Lily.

The child was still holding his hand.

"I promised pancakes."

Lily considered this seriously.

"Tomorrow."

Nathan smiled.

"Tomorrow."

Grace bent down.

"Go with Dana, sweetheart."

Lily frowned.

"You too?"

Grace looked at Nathan.

"Yes."

Nathan opened his mouth.

Grace raised one finger.

"Do not start."

"Your shoulder-"

"Is attached."

"You were kidnapped yesterday."

"So was Lily."

"That is not helping your argument."

Grace stepped closer.

"Rose says Sebastian keeps original records of the Harbor House operation in that bunker."

Nathan stopped.

"She never said that to me."

"She told Allison while you were being released."

"Why would Sebastian keep originals?"

"Insurance against Charles."

Nathan understood.

Every powerful person in this story had protected himself by keeping evidence that could destroy the others.

The conspiracy survived because nobody trusted anyone enough to destroy all the proof.

"Fine," Nathan said.

Grace blinked.

"Fine?"

"I am learning not to tell you what you are allowed to risk."

"Good."

"I still think it is a terrible idea."

"Also good."

Owen checked his phone.

"Judge Price approved the modification."

Nathan handed Lily back to Dana.

The child grabbed his sleeve.

"Tomorrow pancakes."

Nathan touched his forehead to hers.

"Tomorrow pancakes."

The convoy reached Brighton at five twenty-six.

Sebastian's estate sat behind stone walls and acres of clipped hedges.

The greenhouse was visible from the drive, a long glass structure reflecting late-afternoon sun.

Federal agents had already secured the main house.

Sebastian was nowhere inside.

The greenhouse door was locked.

An agent broke the glass beside it and reached through.

Rose had described the hidden entrance beneath a potting bench.

They moved bags of soil and found a steel hatch built into the floor.

A keypad blinked red.

Peter had provided the code.

It failed.

Owen tried once more.

Red.

"Sebastian changed it," he said.

Nathan looked through the glass wall at irrigation pipes running down into the floor.

"The bunker needs air, power, and water management."

Grace looked at him.

"Meaning?"

"There is another access point."

Nathan walked outside along the greenhouse wall.

Near the foundation, a utility panel bore the Vale crest.

He opened it.

Inside was a service diagram.

One line ran to an underground equipment shaft.

"There."

Agents forced the exterior grate.

The shaft was narrow but large enough for one person at a time.

Owen went first.

Nathan followed.

Grace was ordered to remain above with agents.

She argued until Owen threatened to handcuff her to a tomato table.

Nathan almost enjoyed that.

The shaft opened into a mechanical room beneath the greenhouse.

A red warning light flashed above an interior door.

CHEMICAL SUPPRESSION ARMED.

Nathan's stomach tightened.

"We are late."

Owen pressed his radio.

"Team Two, find control panel."

A muffled bang sounded beyond the door.

Then another.

Someone was inside.

Owen forced the lock.

The corridor beyond was filled with white emergency light.

Three rooms opened off it.

The first contained stacked cash boxes and document cartons.

The second contained servers behind glass.

The third door was closed.

A man's voice shouted from behind it.

"Help."

Owen opened the door.

Daniel Keller was on the floor with one ankle secured to a steel pipe.

His lip was split.

He looked at Nathan and laughed weakly.

"You really do have terrible family meetings."

Nathan crouched.

"Can you walk?"

"If someone removes the building from my ankle."

An agent began cutting the restraint.

Keller grabbed Nathan's sleeve.

"Sebastian started the wipe."

Nathan looked toward the server room.

"How long?"

"Digital purge is already running. Chemical suppression triggers when it finishes."

"Can you stop it?"

Keller shook his head.

"Trustee override only."

"Peter said my biometric."

"Then get to the inner console."

Nathan ran.

The server room door required a palm scan.

He pressed his hand against it.

Green.

The door opened.

Rows of black cabinets hummed beneath cold lights.

A countdown glowed on a wall monitor.

04:11.

A console displayed a red button labeled TERMINATE PURGE.

Nathan touched it.

BIOMETRIC CONFIRMATION REQUIRED.

He pressed his thumb to the scanner.

The system rejected him.

"What?"

He tried again.

REJECTED.

Owen entered behind him.

"Peter was wrong?"

Nathan looked at the screen.

A smaller line read PRIMARY OVERRIDE HOLDER: N. COLE / LEGACY PROFILE.

"Legacy profile."

"Meaning?"

Nathan thought of the DNA test Charles had performed without consent.

The trust had used old executive security biometrics for years.

"It may not want my thumb."

He searched the console.

A camera lens sat above the screen.

Nathan looked into it.

Nothing happened.

03:32.

Keller limped into the doorway with an agent supporting him.

"Legacy profile might be retinal and voice combined."

Nathan stared at the screen.

"What phrase?"

"Usually a challenge prompt appears."

Nathan tapped ADVANCED.

A line appeared.

SPEAK FOUNDER AUTHORIZATION PHRASE.

Nathan almost laughed.

"My father is dead."

Keller leaned against the door.

"Maybe he registered a delegate phrase."

"He never told me."

02:58.

Owen looked around.

"Can we physically cut power?"

Keller shook his head.

"Battery system continues purge."

"Break the drives?"

"Chemical release is tied to tamper detection."

Nathan stared at the prompt.

Founder authorization phrase.

Charles had built this.

Charles had left clues in letters, tapes, lockers, and places tied to old choices.

Nathan thought of the final line in the first confession.

I can only leave behind enough truth for you to decide whether the Cole name deserves to survive it.

Maybe that was not only an apology.

Nathan leaned toward the microphone.

"The Cole name does not deserve to survive the truth."

The system beeped.

INVALID PHRASE.

Owen cursed.

02:21.

Keller looked at Nathan.

"What would your father make you say?"

Nathan thought of Charles's obsession with legacy.

Blood.

Control.

Family.

Grace's voice came through Owen's radio from above.

"Nathan, Rose remembers something."

Owen grabbed the radio.

"Say it."

Rose's voice crackled.

"Charles used to dictate private archive locks to me."

"What phrase?"

"He changed them."

Nathan clenched his jaw.

"Rose."

"Wait."

Her voice shook.

"After he learned Lily was his granddaughter, he kept repeating one sentence."

Nathan's heart pounded.

"What sentence?"

"Legacy belongs to the living."

Nathan turned to the console.

01:43.

He looked into the camera.

"Legacy belongs to the living."

The scanner flashed.

VOICE MATCH PARTIAL.

RETINAL CONFIRMATION REQUIRED.

Nathan put his face closer to the lens.

A blue light swept across his eyes.

The countdown stopped at 01:21.

For one second nothing changed.

Then the screen turned green.

PURGE TERMINATED.

CHEMICAL SUPPRESSION DISARMED.

Owen exhaled.

Keller slid against the wall in relief.

Nathan stared at the green screen.

His father had built an emergency system that could only be stopped by the son he spent years trying to control.

Even Charles's regret had needed architecture.

An alarm sounded in the corridor.

Not the purge alarm.

A motion sensor.

Owen turned.

"Movement at the west exit."

Agents shouted over the radio.

Nathan stepped into the hall.

At the far end, a steel door slammed.

"Sebastian," Keller said.

Owen ran.

Nathan followed despite the court condition allowing him only supervised entry.

They emerged through a second staircase into a garden shed beyond the greenhouse.

Sebastian was crossing the lawn toward a waiting SUV.

Two agents shouted for him to stop.

He kept running.

The SUV started moving before he reached it.

Sebastian grabbed the door handle.

Then the driver accelerated away without him.

Sebastian stumbled and fell.

Nathan stopped twenty feet away.

Agents surrounded the older man.

Sebastian looked up at Nathan with dirt on his suit and disbelief on his face.

For the first time, he did not look powerful.

He looked abandoned.

"Who was driving?" Owen shouted.

Sebastian said nothing.

Nathan looked toward the disappearing SUV.

He knew the vehicle.

It belonged to Frederick Sloan, chairman of Cole Industrial.

Nathan's stomach dropped.

Frederick had not merely watched the conspiracy.

May you like

He had just driven away from it.
