Chapter 11 - THE FOUNDATION FLOOR

The Vale Foundation occupied twelve floors of glass, marble, and carefully photographed generosity.

Its lobby displayed enlarged images of children receiving scholarships, families receiving medical grants, and elderly couples standing beside new homes.

Nathan had attended three fundraising galas there.

He had never wondered where the foundation's private elevators went after the eleventh floor.

Detective Owen Mercer did.

"Building plans show a mechanical level above twelve," Owen said as the unmarked vehicles stopped two blocks away.

"No office use is listed."

Grace looked at the plans on his tablet.

"That is where they will be."

Nathan glanced at her.

"How do you know?"

"Because people like Eleanor hide cruelty above rooms decorated with kindness."

Nathan did not argue.

Allison Grant was already moving federal agents into position with a warrant based on kidnapping, obstruction, and evidence from the second ledger.

The tactical team would enter from the loading dock and lobby simultaneously.

Nathan was told to remain outside.

He lasted thirty seconds.

"My daughter is in there."

Owen faced him.

"And if you walk into an active entry, I will have one more person to protect."

"Victoria wants me."

"That is exactly why you do not go first."

Grace stepped between them.

"I am going."

Owen stared at her sling.

"No."

"Rose will not trust armed strangers if she thinks Eleanor still controls them."

"You do not know Rose is free to choose anything right now."

"Then she needs to hear my voice."

Nathan looked at Owen.

"Take us behind your team."

Owen's jaw tightened.

"You two are becoming the worst part of this investigation."

"Noted," Nathan said.

They entered after the first floor was secured.

The lobby receptionist had fled.

Two private guards were face down on the marble with federal agents cuffing them.

The public elevators were disabled.

A service elevator still worked with a master access card recovered from security.

Owen took them to floor twelve.

The doors opened onto an empty conference center.

No Lily.

No Rose.

No Victoria.

Then Grace heard something.

"Wait."

Everyone stopped.

A child's cry came faintly through the ceiling.

Nathan's heart pounded.

"Lily."

Owen found a locked stairwell door behind a movable wall panel.

The master card failed.

An agent forced it open.

The stairs led to a narrow corridor above the public floors.

There were no windows.

Five doors lined one side.

The first room contained surveillance equipment.

The second contained file boxes.

The third was empty.

Behind the fourth, someone shouted.

"Mommy."

Grace ran.

Nathan was beside her.

Owen reached the door first.

"Federal agents."

No answer.

He forced the lock.

Lily stood in the corner clutching her rabbit.

Victoria had one arm around her shoulders.

Rose Donnelly sat in a chair nearby with tape around her wrists.

Eleanor stood beside a metal table covered with documents.

Nobody held a weapon.

That did not make the room feel safe.

Grace stepped forward.

"Lily."

The child cried out and tried to run.

Victoria tightened her grip.

Nathan saw something in Victoria's hand.

A small glass vial.

"Do not move," Victoria said.

Grace froze.

Owen raised his weapon.

"Let the child go."

Victoria laughed nervously.

"Put that down."

"What is in your hand?"

"Nothing dangerous if everybody behaves."

Nathan's stomach turned.

Eleanor looked almost bored.

"Victoria, stop performing."

Victoria glared at her mother.

"You said they would trade."

"They were supposed to."

Eleanor looked at Nathan.

"Instead, Nathan brought law enforcement into a family matter."

Nathan stared at her.

"You kidnapped my daughter."

"I recovered a child from an unstable situation."

Grace took one step.

"Say that again."

Eleanor looked at her.

"You heard me."

"You followed me for five years."

"Charles followed you."

"Your handwriting is in the ledger after he died."

For the first time, Eleanor's eyes sharpened.

Nathan saw it.

"We have the originals," he said.

Eleanor's face did not change.

"Then why are you here?"

"Because paper is not my daughter."

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"That is the weakness Charles feared."

Nathan's hands curled.

"Loving a child is weakness to you?"

"Allowing emotion to destroy thousands of employees, billions in value, and generations of family stewardship is weakness."

Nathan looked around the hidden room.

"You built a prison above a charity office."

"It is a secure records floor."

Rose finally spoke.

"You locked me in here for six hours."

Eleanor turned toward her.

"You were hysterical."

Rose laughed.

"There is the capacity route again."

Owen's eyes narrowed.

Eleanor realized the phrase had significance.

Too late.

Rose looked at Nathan.

She was older than he remembered, thinner, and visibly exhausted.

"Your father was a coward."

Nathan nodded.

"I know."

Rose blinked, surprised.

"But he got scared of them at the end."

Eleanor's composure slipped.

"Rose."

"He got scared of you."

Rose looked at Eleanor.

"Tell him why."

Eleanor's face hardened.

Victoria's grip on Lily loosened slightly as she looked toward her mother.

Nathan noticed.

Grace noticed too.

She lowered her voice.

"Lily, sweetheart."

Victoria snapped her attention back.

"Do not."

Grace kept her voice soft.

"Remember the red-light game?"

Lily's crying slowed.

Nathan had no idea what that meant.

Grace did.

"Red light means freeze."

Lily went still.

Victoria frowned.

"What are you doing?"

"Green light means run."

Victoria's eyes widened.

Grace shouted.

"Green."

Lily dropped straight down instead of pulling forward.

Victoria's arm slipped over her head.

Nathan lunged.

He grabbed Lily and turned his body around her.

Owen moved at the same instant.

An agent seized Victoria's wrist.

The glass vial fell and shattered harmlessly on the floor.

A sharp medicinal smell rose from it.

Grace reached Lily.

For several seconds, mother and daughter clung to each other so tightly Nathan could not see Lily's face.

He stood beside them with his hands shaking.

Victoria screamed at the agent.

"Do you know who I am?"

The agent cuffed her.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Then take these off."

"No, ma'am."

Nathan would remember the simplicity of that answer for years.

Eleanor remained beside the table.

She had not attempted to run.

Owen approached her.

"Eleanor Vale, you are being detained pending investigation into kidnapping, obstruction, conspiracy, and attempted destruction of evidence."

Eleanor looked at Nathan instead of him.

"This will not hold."

Nathan believed she might be right.

That was the terrible part.

She had judges in the ledger.

Bankers.

Prosecutors.

Board members.

One arrest did not erase a system.

Rose was freed from the chair.

Grace helped her stand.

"I thought you were dead."

Rose gave a weak smile.

"They wanted you to think I jumped."

"How did they find you?"

Rose's eyes moved to Eleanor.

"Someone I trusted told them."

Nathan looked at her.

"Who?"

Rose hesitated.

"We should not talk here."

Nathan followed her gaze.

A small camera was mounted in the ceiling.

Owen immediately signaled an agent.

"Pull the recording system."

Rose looked at Nathan.

"The second ledger is dangerous, but it is not the worst thing in Box 714."

Nathan frowned.

"What is worse?"

Rose lowered her voice.

"The succession agreement."

Nathan felt dread.

"What succession agreement?"

Before Rose could answer, Eleanor laughed softly from across the room.

"You still have not read it."

Nathan turned.

Eleanor's smile returned.

"Charles always did enjoy letting you discover consequences too late."

Nathan looked at Rose.

"What happens under the agreement?"

Rose's face was pale.

"If you publicly accuse the trust of criminal conduct without first obtaining approval from the successor trustee, your beneficial interest can be terminated."

Nathan stared at her.

"Eleanor is the successor trustee."

"Yes."

Eleanor spoke gently.

"If you release that ledger, Nathan, you lose everything Charles left you."

Nathan almost smiled.

"You think that matters right now?"

Eleanor's eyes moved to Lily.

"It will when you learn who receives your shares if you are disqualified."

Nathan felt the room change.

"Who?"

Eleanor looked at Victoria.

Victoria had stopped struggling.

Then Eleanor said it.

"Your legal spouse."

Nathan stared.

"I am not married."

Eleanor's smile widened.

"Not yet."

Rose closed her eyes.

"There is more."

Nathan looked at her.

Rose whispered,

"The agreement recognizes a marriage instrument signed in advance under a family trust ceremony."

Nathan's stomach dropped.

"What marriage instrument?"

Victoria began to laugh.

Nathan looked at her.

She met his eyes with a smile that was suddenly calm.

May you like

"The one you signed at your engagement dinner."
