Chapter 6 - The Sun on the Horizon

Six months later.

The Hudson Valley estate was blooming with early summer flowers. The dark, cold atmosphere that had hung over the property for a decade was entirely gone, replaced by the sounds of children's laughter, warm breezes, and open windows.

The estate’s grand lawn stretched down toward the river, where a large white marquee had been set up for a private summer celebration.

I stood on the stone terrace wearing an elegant white silk dress that swayed softly in the warm river breeze. My hair was styled in soft, natural waves, and on my left ring finger sparkled a stunning oval-cut diamond ring that caught the golden afternoon light.

"Mommy! Look!"

Four-year-old Lily came running across the manicured grass, wearing a tiny yellow summer dress and holding a large piece of heavy drawing paper.

Beside her walked Alessandro Romano.

He had discarded his formal suits for a simple white linen shirt and dark trousers, his dark hair slightly ruffled by the wind. He carried a wooden easel under one arm and a massive box of professional artist materials under the other.

"What did you draw today, sweetheart?" I asked, kneeling down as Lily reached the terrace steps.

Lily proudly held up her paper.

It was a drawing of three people standing in front of a big stone house. One figure was tall with a black coat; one was a woman in a white dress with long hair; and the tiny figure in the middle was holding hands with both of them.

Above their heads, covering half the sky in brilliant, radiant wax strokes, was a massive red and yellow sun.

Alessandro set the easel down, kneeling beside us on the stone steps. He looked at the drawing, then looked up at me, his eyes filled with a deep, unshakeable love that filled my heart to overflowing.

"Is it finished, Lily?" Alessandro asked gently, pulling her into a warm side-hug.

"No," Lily said seriously, pulling a bright red crayon from her dress pocket. She leaned over the paper and carefully drew a tiny heart right in the middle of Alessandro's chest. "Now it's finished."

Alessandro let out a soft laugh—a real, rich sound that echoed across the sunny terrace. He looked at me, taking my hand in his, pressing a warm, tender kiss against my knuckles.

"She's right, you know," Alessandro whispered softly, looking into my eyes. "It's finally finished."

I leaned in, pressing my lips against his in a sweet, passionate kiss that sealed all our past heartbreaks into distant memories.

The lies had been exposed, the traitors had fallen, and in the bright, warm light of our new beginning, the family we had built together would shine forever.
