Chapter 3 - The Night of the Red Ledger

The library went completely dead silent.
Julian Finch gasped, backing away from Marco as if the security chief were carrying a live bomb. The two port managers stood frozen near the window.
Marco didn't hesitate. Realizing his seventeen-year deception had been stripped bare by a toddler with a crayon, he reached inside his jacket for his concealed sidearm.
"DOMINIC!" Alessandro roared.
Before Marco’s gun could clear his holster, the heavy oak doors of the library were kicked open. Dominic and two loyal house guards lunged into the room. Dominic slammed Marco against the edge of the mahogany desk, disarming him in a fluid, brutal motion that sent crystal glasses shattering across the floor.
Marco grunted as his arm was pinned behind his back, his face pressed against the dark leather of the desk.
"You idiot!" Marco spat, turning his head to glare venomously at Alessandro, his polished persona completely shattered. "You think you can run this city forever, Romano? The Morettis offered me ten percent of every shipment moving through the river! They own the docks! They own the federal prosecutors! You're holding onto an empire that's already dead!"
Alessandro slowly stood up from the rug. He didn't look angry; he looked coldly, terrifyingly resolved.
He walked over to Marco, looking down at his former head of security with absolute disdain.
"You sold my brother's routes four years ago, didn't you, Marco?" Alessandro asked quietly. "The accident on the highway... it wasn't a mechanical failure."
Marco sneered through his bloodied lip. "Your brother was soft. Just like you're soft for letting a maid and her bastard child run around this house!"
Alessandro’s expression didn't change, but his eyes burned with a dark, terrifying fire. He leaned down, his voice dropping to a whisper meant only for Marco.
"My brother is dead," Alessandro said softly. "But I am very much alive. Take him to the wine cellar vault. Nobody touches him until I have every offshore account number he used."
Dominic dragged the thrashing traitor out of the room, leaving the remaining men trembling in silence.
I stood near the fireplace, clutching Lily against my chest, my body shaking so violently I could barely stay upright. I had just witnessed the complete collapse of the estate’s power structure, and my daughter was at the very center of it.
Alessandro turned to the remaining men. "Julian. Take the port managers to the lower office. Audit every manifest Marco touched over the last five years. I want a full report by midnight."
"Yes, Mr. Romano immediately!" Julian scrambled out of the room, followed quickly by the managers, slamming the heavy doors shut.
The grand library was suddenly empty, save for the crackle of the fireplace, the ticking of the grandfather clock, and the soft breathing of my daughter.
Alessandro walked over to us.
I instinctively stepped back, my eyes wide with fear. "Mr. Romano... I swear, she didn't mean to spy... she just wanders into rooms when I'm folding clothes—"
"Clara," Alessandro interrupted softly, using my first name for the very first time.
He stopped two feet away from me. The cold, lethal killer who had just ordered a man dragged to a basement vault was completely gone. In his place stood a tired, heavily burdened man whose shoulders slumped beneath an impossible weight.
"Your daughter just saved my life, and the lives of fifty men who work for me," Alessandro said quietly. He reached out his hand, gently touching Lily's soft cheek with his thumb. "You have nothing to apologize for. Ever."

"What... what happens now?" I asked, my voice breaking.
"Now, the war starts," Alessandro replied, his dark eyes locking onto mine with a fierce, protective intensity. "And until it's over, you and Lily do not leave my sight."
