Chapter 4 - The Siege of the West Wing

By 9:00 PM that night, the Hudson Valley was buried under a thick, blinding winter blizzard.

The estate was placed on maximum tactical lockdown. Iron security shutters descended over every window on the ground floor, and twenty heavily armed loyal guards patrolled the perimeter.

Alessandro had moved me and Lily out of our small two-room apartment above the staff kitchen and into the master suite in the West Wing—a reinforced, bulletproof sanctuary at the top of the house.

I sat on the edge of the massive king-sized bed, watching Lily draw peacefully on a set of white sheets Alessandro’s assistants had brought up. She was completely oblivious to the fact that two miles down the highway, three armored vans belonging to the Moretti family were advancing through the snow.

Alessandro stood by the mahogany fireplace, wearing a dark tactical vest over his black shirt, checking the magazine of a sidearm.

"The Morettis know Marco was compromised," Alessandro explained calmly, his tone precise and focused. "Marco was supposed to check in at eight o'clock. When he didn't, their leadership realized the trap was sprung. They know that if I hand Marco's ledgers to the federal grand jury tomorrow, their entire family goes to prison for life."

I clutched my hands together in my lap. "Are they coming here?"

"They're already at the south gate," Alessandro said simply. "They think they can breach the estate before the State Police arrive. They don't realize I control the State Police commander in this district."

He walked over to the bed and sat beside me. He set his sidearm on the nightstand and looked at me, his gaze softening.

"Clara," he said gently. "I know this isn't the life you envisioned when you took a housekeeping job here."

"I took the job to keep a roof over my daughter's head, Alessandro," I whispered, tears brimming in my eyes. "After my husband died... I felt like the whole world was trying to crush us. I was so scared every single day."

Alessandro reached out, taking my cold hands into his large, warm palms. The contrast was overwhelming—his hands were scarred and calloused from a lifetime of violence, yet his touch was gentler than anything I had known in years.

"Your husband was a fool if he left you feeling alone," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a low, passionate murmur. "Since the day I saw your daughter draw on my car with that red crayon... I realized something. This house wasn't an empire. It was an empty cage. You and Lily brought light into a place that had been dead for ten years."

My breath caught in my throat. I stared into his dark eyes, seeing no trace of the mafia boss—only a man who wanted desperately to protect us.

"Alessandro..." I murmured.

Before I could say another word, a heavy explosion rocked the outer estate gates, shaking the floorboards beneath our feet.

The emergency sirens began to wail through the estate speakers.

Alessandro stood up instantly, pulling his sidearm from the nightstand. His face hardened back into dark stone, but he turned to me one last time.

"Lock the door behind me," he ordered firmly. "No matter what you hear outside, do not open it until you hear my voice."

"Alessandro, wait!" I cried out.

He stopped at the threshold, turning his head.

"Be careful," I whispered, tears slipping down my cheek. "Please come back to us."

A small, genuine smile touched his lips. "I have a sun to keep me warm, Clara. I'm not going anywhere."
