Chapter 16 - The Night Alejandro Walked Into the Trap

Alejandro did not tell Isabella immediately.

He should have.

He knew that.

But for exactly three minutes, fear made the decision before reason could.

Her name was marked in Rizzo's ledger.

ISABELLA DELGADO — PRIMARY CAUSE OF DEVIATION.

Alejandro stared at the phrase.

Deviation.

As though loving someone were an illness.

As though becoming less violent were corruption.

Rizzo had inherited Vittorio's worldview so completely that Isabella was not a woman to him.

She was contamination.

Alejandro closed the ledger.

Isabella entered.

“What aren't you telling me?”

Alejandro looked up.

“How do you do that?”

“You make the same face every time.”

“What face?”

“The one Emma calls scary.”

He sighed.

Then told her.

She read the entry.

Her hands shook slightly.

“I ruined you?”

“Apparently.”

She looked at him.

“I always wanted that on my résumé.”

Despite everything, Alejandro laughed.

Isabella smiled faintly.

Then her expression sobered.

“What happens now?”

“We move you and Emma.”

“No.”

“Secure location.”

“This house is supposed to be secure.”

“Rizzo knows it.”

“So do half your enemies.”

“Exactly.”

Isabella crossed her arms.

“Where?”

“Federal protection.”

She stared.

“You trust them?”

“More than Rizzo.”

“That is an incredibly low standard.”

“Yes.”

Emma would not like moving.

She liked the library.

The kitten.

Maria.

The guards who pretended not to play hide-and-seek while actually playing.

But Alejandro was finished mistaking comfort for safety.

By afternoon, arrangements were made.

Before they could leave, a message arrived.

Video.

Daniel.

Bound.

Bruised.

Dominic beside him.

Rizzo walked into frame.

“Hello, Alejandro.”

Everyone in the study watched.

Rizzo continued.

“Your father believed men reveal themselves when forced to choose.”

Alejandro's face hardened.

“I believe he was correct.”

Camera shifted.

Dominic's face.

Then Daniel.

“Two men betrayed the family for selfish reasons.”

Rizzo smiled.

“One wanted power.”

Dominic glared.

“One wanted a woman.”

Daniel looked away.

“And you?”

Rizzo leaned closer to the camera.

“You betrayed it for love.”

Alejandro almost laughed at the absurdity.

Rizzo continued.

“Midnight. Saint Michael's warehouse. Alone.”

Marco muttered, “No.”

“Bring the original ledger.”

Alejandro stared.

“If you don't, one dies every hour.”

Video ended.

Marco immediately said, “Absolutely not.”

Alejandro looked at the clock.

8:17 p.m.

“We have less than four hours.”

“Send police.”

“Rizzo kills them.”

“Send tactical.”

“Same.”

Isabella said, “You are not going alone.”

Alejandro looked at her.

“I won't.”

Marco frowned.

“He specifically said—”

“I'll appear alone.”

Marco understood.

They designed the operation.

Federal agents surrounded the district but remained outside Rizzo's likely surveillance.

Marco's men used tunnels beneath adjacent buildings.

Alejandro carried no weapon that could be spotted.

Only the ledger.

And one painted red stone in his pocket.

Emma found him before he left.

She had changed from pajamas into her pink dress for no reason anyone understood.

Maybe children sensed important moments.

“You're going again.”

Alejandro crouched.

“Yes.”

“I hate this.”

“So do I.”

“Is it dangerous?”

“Yes.”

Isabella closed her eyes.

Alejandro refused to lie.

Emma looked at his coat.

“Do you have the rock?”

He showed her.

She nodded.

“Good.”

“Emma.”

“Yes?”

“I need you to listen to your mother tonight.”

“I always do.”

Isabella made a sound.

Emma corrected herself.

“Mostly.”

Alejandro smiled.

Emma touched his face.

“Come home.”

He looked at her.

“I'll try.”

“No.”

He froze.

“Promise.”

“Emma…”

“Promise.”

Alejandro wanted certainty.

Children demanded things adults learned not to request because adults knew promises could fail.

But maybe promises were not predictions.

Maybe they were decisions.

“I promise to fight my way back.”

Emma considered this.

“Okay.”

She hugged him.

Alejandro held her.

Then she whispered, “And bring Mama cookies.”

He laughed.

“Why?”

“She eats when she's nervous.”

Isabella stared.

“Traitor.”

Emma smiled.

Alejandro left.

Saint Michael's warehouse had once belonged to Vittorio.

Of course Rizzo chose it.

Old portraits.

Old loyalties.

Old blood.

Alejandro entered at 11:58.

Rizzo stood beneath a hanging light.

Dominic and Daniel were tied to chairs.

Both alive.

Rizzo smiled.

“Punctual.”

“Always.”

“Ledger.”

Alejandro held it up.

“Release them.”

Rizzo laughed.

“You care if they live?”

“No.”

Dominic stared.

Daniel lowered his head.

Alejandro continued.

“But their families do.”

Rizzo's smile faded.

“You sound like your mother.”

“Thank you.”

“That was not praise.”

“I know.”

“Your mother weakened Vittorio.”

“No.”

Alejandro stepped closer.

“She reminded him he was weak already.”

Rizzo's face tightened.

“You know nothing.”

“I know you spent forty years serving men because being feared beside them made you feel powerful.”

Rizzo drew a pistol.

Alejandro stopped.

“Careful.”

Rizzo gestured.

“Ledger.”

Alejandro placed it on the floor and pushed it forward.

Rizzo picked it up.

“Finally.”

“What do you want with it?”

“Rebuild.”

“No.”

Rizzo smiled.

“You think shutting warehouses destroys us?”

“Yes.”

“Names remain.”

“Allies.”

“Accounts.”

“Fear.”

Rizzo tapped the ledger.

“This is the family.”

Alejandro looked at it.

“No.”

Rizzo frowned.

“This is bookkeeping.”

Then alarms outside sounded.

Rizzo raised the gun.

“You brought police.”

Alejandro said nothing.

Rizzo fired.

Not at Alejandro.

At Daniel.

Dominic kicked his chair sideways.

The bullet struck wood.

Chaos erupted.

Marco's team entered through a side wall.

Federal agents moved from the front.

Rizzo grabbed Alejandro.

Gun beneath his jaw.

“Everybody stop!”

They stopped.

Rizzo breathed against Alejandro's ear.

“You destroyed everything.”

Alejandro looked at Marco.

“Maybe.”

“You'll die with it.”

Rizzo backed toward the loading door.

Alejandro felt the red stone in his pocket.

Emma.

House.

Support.

Something underneath.

He moved suddenly.

Not toward the weapon.

Down.

Rizzo lost balance.

Marco fired once.

The pistol flew from Rizzo's hand.

Agents tackled him.

Alejandro remained on the floor.

Alive.

Dominic stared.

Daniel stared.

Rizzo screamed as cuffs closed around his wrists.

“You are nothing!”

Alejandro stood.

Blood ran from a cut near his temple.

He looked at the old man.

“For the first time, I hope so.”

Dominic was freed.

He looked at Alejandro.

“You saved me.”

“No.”

“You did.”

“I saved your children from attending your funeral.”

Dominic's face collapsed.

Alejandro turned to Daniel.

Daniel could barely meet his eyes.

“Why?”

Alejandro asked.

Daniel whispered, “I thought if you were gone, she'd finally choose me.”

“Eleven men died.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Alejandro stepped closer.

“You know the number.”

Daniel began crying.

“You don't know the eleven people.”

Daniel looked down.

Alejandro signaled the agents.

“Take him.”

Daniel whispered, “Tell Emma I'm sorry.”

Alejandro stopped.

He wanted to refuse.

Then he remembered Marco's warning.

Living was harder.

“I'll tell her the truth when she's old enough.”

Daniel nodded.

The authorities took both Daniel and Dominic.

Dominic looked back.

“Will you testify?”

“Yes.”

“Against me?”

“Yes.”

Dominic nodded slowly.

“I suppose Vittorio really is gone.”

Alejandro looked at him.

“He should have been gone a long time ago.”

Outside, dawn approached.

Marco handed Alejandro his phone.

“Call home.”

Alejandro dialed.

Emma answered.

Not Isabella.

“Dad?”

He smiled.

“Why are you awake?”

“You promised.”

“I know.”

“Are you coming home?”

Alejandro looked at the warehouse.

Rizzo in cuffs.

Daniel arrested.

Dominic defeated.

The old ledger in federal hands.

“Yes.”

Emma shouted away from the phone.

“MAMA! HE'S COMING!”

Alejandro laughed.

Then Emma returned.

“Did you get cookies?”

Alejandro closed his eyes.

“No.”

Silence.

“You forgot?”

“I was busy.”

“You promised to come home. Not cookies.”

“Good.”

“But still rude.”

Alejandro laughed again.

“See you soon.”

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“I knew the rock would work.”

Alejandro touched his pocket.

“Me too.”

The call ended.

For the first time, no enemy waited behind the next door.

At least none Alejandro knew about.

But freedom came with consequences.

Rizzo would face trial.

Daniel would face charges connected to eleven deaths.

Dominic would likely spend years in prison.

And Alejandro himself had given prosecutors enough evidence to charge him with crimes from his own past.

Marco asked the question.

“What happens when they come for you?”

Alejandro looked toward the sunrise.

“I answer.”

“You might lose years.”

“I know.”

“What will you tell Emma?”

Alejandro thought of six lost years already.

“The truth.”

Because if his daughter taught him anything, it was that hiding painful truths did not protect families.

May you like

It only delayed the moment they had to survive them.

When Alejandro arrived home, two federal vehicles were already waiting at his gate—and this time the warrant had his name on it.
