Chapter 14 - The Betrayal Inside the Moretti Family

Isabella refused immediately.

“No.”

Alejandro stood in the kitchen with the black envelope in his hand.

“Listen.”

“No.”

“Dominic expects me to hide her.”

“Good.”

“He'll attack elsewhere.”

“Then stop him.”

“I am.”

“Without Emma.”

Alejandro understood.

He hated the idea too.

But there was a reason.

“Dominic's entire argument is that I became weak because of her.”

Isabella crossed her arms.

“He's correct.”

Alejandro almost smiled.

“Thank you.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes.”

“He wants to see whether you'll protect power or protect Emma.”

“And I'm going to answer.”

“By bringing her?”

“By bringing her into a room filled with every man he thinks still belongs to him.”

Isabella stared.

“That sounds insane.”

“It may be.”

“No.”

Emma entered.

“What's insane?”

Both adults stopped.

Isabella said, “Nothing.”

Emma sighed.

“Boring adult?”

Alejandro crouched.

“No.”

Isabella looked at him sharply.

He continued.

“There's a meeting tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

“Some people there believe I should keep doing dangerous work.”

Emma frowned.

“Why?”

“Because it makes money.”

“That's stupid.”

Alejandro nodded.

“I agree.”

Isabella watched.

Alejandro said, “I want to tell them I'm done.”

Emma smiled.

“Good.”

“They may not like it.”

“So?”

“So I thought maybe you'd stand with me.”

Isabella whispered, “Alejandro.”

Emma looked at her mother.

“Can I?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because those men are dangerous.”

Emma considered.

“Dad is dangerous.”

Alejandro coughed.

Isabella glared at him as though he had planted the answer.

“I am aware.”

Emma looked at Alejandro.

“Are you scared?”

“Yes.”

That surprised both Emma and Isabella.

“Of them?”

“No.”

“Of what?”

Alejandro answered honestly.

“Of becoming the person they want me to be.”

Emma walked closer.

She put her hand into his.

“Then don't.”

Alejandro looked at Isabella.

He did not need to argue anymore.

The simple answer was the point.

Then don't.

The council met in an old Moretti social club in Brooklyn.

The building had existed since Alejandro's grandfather immigrated.

Dark wood.

Old photographs.

Men who believed history gave them permission.

Alejandro arrived with Marco.

Isabella.

Emma.

And ten loyal men.

Dominic stood at the far end of the room.

Rizzo was absent.

That concerned Alejandro.

Four captains who defected stood with Dominic.

Others remained neutral.

Dominic laughed when he saw Emma.

“You actually brought her.”

Alejandro walked forward.

“Yes.”

“This is what you've become?”

Alejandro looked down at Emma.

She wore a pale pink dress because she insisted.

Her ribbon sat neatly in her hair.

She held the red stone.

“This is what I was supposed to become a long time ago.”

Dominic's smile faded.

Alejandro addressed the room.

“I won't speak long.”

One captain muttered, “That's new.”

A few nervous laughs.

Alejandro continued.

“Three nights ago, eleven men died because people inside this family decided power mattered more than life.”

Dominic interrupted.

“You don't know that.”

“I do.”

Alejandro placed files on the table.

Route changes.

Rizzo photographs.

Biometric theft.

Daniel's notebook.

Gabriel's statement.

Dominic's expression changed gradually.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

Alejandro continued.

“Salvatore Rizzo participated.”

He looked at Dominic.

“So did my uncle.”

Men shifted.

Dominic laughed.

“Evidence?”

Marco pressed a button.

Audio played.

The railway yard.

Dominic's voice.

Take the businesses.

Transfer control.

Declare no legitimate heir.

The room became silent.

Dominic stared at Alejandro.

“You recorded me.”

“Yes.”

“You planned that.”

“Yes.”

“You offered everything.”

“I meant that too.”

Alejandro looked around.

“I am closing every illegal Moretti operation.”

Chaos erupted.

Men shouted.

Chairs moved.

Dominic raised his voice.

“He is destroying your livelihoods!”

Alejandro waited.

When the noise settled, he said, “Every employee of legitimate businesses retains employment.”

“What about the rest?” someone asked.

“The rest should find legal work.”

A man laughed angrily.

“You think after thirty years—”

“Yes.”

“You don't get to decide.”

“I already did.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“Vittorio would spit on you.”

Alejandro looked at the portrait of his father hanging on the wall.

“I spent half my life afraid of that.”

He turned back.

“I am not anymore.”

Emma looked up at the portrait too.

“Is that Grandpa?”

The room froze.

Alejandro nodded.

“He looks grumpy.”

A few men laughed before they could stop themselves.

Alejandro looked at Emma.

“He was.”

Dominic's face reddened.

“This is a joke to you?”

Emma flinched.

Alejandro stepped between them.

The room temperature seemed to drop.

“You raise your voice at her again, and this meeting ends differently.”

Dominic stared.

There it was.

The old Alejandro.

But controlled.

Directed.

Not ruling him.

Dominic looked around.

“You see? She controls him.”

Carlo Bianchi stood.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

Carlo had arrived quietly.

His son beside him.

“She reminds him.”

“Of what?” Dominic spat.

Carlo looked at Emma.

“That we're supposed to be human.”

One man stood with Carlo.

Then another.

Vincent looked toward Dominic.

He had defected yesterday.

Now he stepped away.

Dominic stared.

“You too?”

Vincent said, “I wanted the business.”

“And?”

“I don't want this.”

He nodded toward Emma.

“Threatening children. Graveyards. Eleven dead men.”

Dominic's support began collapsing.

Alejandro had expected guns.

Instead, truth was doing more damage.

Then the front windows shattered.

Rizzo's men attacked.

Everyone dropped.

Alejandro pulled Emma beneath the table.

Isabella covered her.

Marco returned fire with security.

Dominic shouted, “What are you doing?”

He had not expected it.

Alejandro realized immediately.

Rizzo was no longer following Dominic.

Rizzo had decided everybody was expendable.

Another burst shattered wood.

One of Dominic's men fell wounded.

Alejandro dragged him behind cover.

Dominic stared.

“Why help him?”

Alejandro looked at his uncle.

“Because he has children.”

Moretti guards forced Rizzo's team back.

Within minutes, police sirens approached.

Alejandro had called them before entering.

Another thing the old family considered unforgivable.

Dominic understood.

“You brought police?”

“Yes.”

“You're insane.”

“No.”

Alejandro looked toward Emma.

“I'm done protecting criminals from consequences.”

Rizzo escaped again.

But most attackers were arrested.

Dominic remained inside as police entered.

Alejandro gave them the railway recording.

The attack evidence.

Financial records.

Everything.

Dominic stared at him.

“You'll bury yourself too.”

Alejandro nodded.

“Maybe.”

Isabella grabbed his arm.

Emma looked frightened.

Police approached Alejandro.

One detective said, “Mr. Moretti, we'd like you to come with us.”

Emma's face collapsed.

“No.”

Alejandro crouched.

“It's okay.”

“You're leaving.”

“For a little while.”

“You said come back.”

“I will.”

“Promise?”

He hesitated.

He hated making promises when the future belonged to judges and prosecutors.

But he also understood Emma was not asking for certainty.

She was asking whether he would keep trying.

“I promise I'll do everything I can.”

Emma hugged him.

The detective looked away.

Alejandro stood.

He allowed himself to be escorted outside.

No handcuffs.

Yet.

Cameras flashed.

News crews shouted.

For decades, Moretti men feared being seen cooperating.

Alejandro walked directly toward the lights.

He had chosen.

Behind him, Emma pressed against Isabella's side.

Dominic shouted from another police vehicle.

“This ends with you in a cage!”

Alejandro looked at his uncle.

“Maybe.”

Then at Emma.

“But it ends.”

The police car door closed.

May you like

For the first time in his adult life, Alejandro Moretti had surrendered control voluntarily.

What he did not know was that Rizzo had escaped with one final piece of Vittorio's legacy—a ledger containing the names of every Moretti enemy, ally, and hidden account accumulated over forty years.
